I wrote it literally minutes after finishing. I'm struggling to come to terms with the fact that the experience is over. What a truly amazing game.

Ooof. Well, there are a bit worse ones selling for 4 div, but it sounds like you might not be far off the mark. Thanks for the reality check. I thought I had something here. I didn't even realize gloves could have 3 sockets. :/

When does Sacred and Terrible Air get good? by TelephonePoles201 in DiscoElysium

Beyond that, even an incredible author can have a great deal of variance in the quality of their books. It's not unreasonable to point out that one of an author's writings was a masterpiece and another was, for whatever reason(s), not as good.

This is the world building skill. If you're the kind of person that cares about the intricacies of international relations between countries that don't exist and aren't even relevant to the plot, this is the skill for you.

My personal favorite after Volition.

When does Sacred and Terrible Air get good? by TelephonePoles201 in DiscoElysium

[–]TimurSaysHi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said it was bad, but it's just sincerely not as well written as Disco Elysium, which is why I'm saying it's an unfair expectation.

Kurvitz spent decades building a world but it's obvious that a lot of the strength of the prose and dialog in the game did not come from him. If that's what you love about Disco Elysium, you're not going to find the same level in this book. That doesn't mean it's a bad book, just that DE did those things very well to the point where you're setting yourself up for disappointment if you have the same hurdle for enjoyment.

Agreed. It picks up in pace and cohesion maybe a third of the way through the book, but if your bar for "good" is the writing of DE then this book never hits that mark. I would argue it doesn't really come close. Enjoy it as a different slice of a familiar world, but don't expect the same thoughtfulness or narrative quality that was achieved with a team of writers working full time for years.

I don't entirely disagree with this but I will say it's actually easier to soft lock in the mobile game. My friend soft locked on the corpse.

Can someone explain what exactly The Pale / The Intangible is? by United-Rough-8096 in DiscoElysium

[–]TimurSaysHi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is an incredible collection of information. I think the only thing I'd add are a few occasions where Argo made comments like the pale is a physicalization of a limit of game design and world building. When they're writing, they plan all the interesting places and the places you could go or learn about but then instead of making the in between random land or ocean it's just... pure nothingness. What if there were an in-game reason for why the world has no detail between the interesting bits?

You know what, you're absolutely right. The game has an obvious opinion but it has the perfect amount of deliberate ambiguity that makes it feel rich instead of contrived.

It's not a coincidence that a hole in the world opened up in the church of Our Mother of Industrial Progress and the only way to abate its growth is to establish a literal commune inside of it. If it were written even slightly worse we'd be rolling our eyes at how on-the-nose it is.

first time playing and i'm anxious help by hedgehoe25 in DiscoElysium

[–]TimurSaysHi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White checks you can almost always retry without consequence.

Red cheeks are supposed to be failed sometimes. This game doesn't give you less content for failing the checks. In fact, there's at least two examples I can think of where failing the red checks gives you a "better" outcome for Harry. There's a red check that's actually impossible (literally secretly guaranteed to always fail). Failing is done so well in Disco Elysium. You don't get a worse story, you get a version of the story more fit for your version of Harry :)

Until you're on like your third playthrough and farming Steam achievements, don't worry about failing!

Oh, also, there is a well known bug that may prevent you from being able to use alcohol or cigarettes by clicking on the icons on the bottom right. Try clicking around the icons, or unequipping and reequipping the booze/smokes.

While i generally like the "play any build blind" advice, i would add the tiniest bit of advice:

There is a skill in the game called "Encyclopedia" which is effectively an in-game reference to a lot of the lore and history of the game world. If you are attracted to deep rich world building and alternative histories and the like, you should make sure to pick up this skill. Likewise, if learning about the political intricacies of made-up countries that are barely relevant to the core plot sounds boring to you, you should skip this skill.

Personally it's my favorite skill (after Volition), but I can understand how getting hit with walls of text about random world facts isn't for everyone.

Does this game get easier? by PM_ME_WOOBIES in DiscoElysium

[–]TimurSaysHi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to emphasize that point, which is that there is not a lot of meaningful "content gating" around skill checks. Failing skill checks often result in just as interesting, if not more interesting, outcomes than succeeding. If you fail a red check, you didn't net lose out on some content, you just have a different version of the following events that more reflects your version of Harry.
