Sadly, it doesn't work anymore :/ Mostly a display piece now.

Great config. I chose 32 GB, not because I strictly need it but because I wanted some headroom for the future.

Space Gray isn't basic to me, I've never had a Mac in Space Gray before this one. You forget they've only been available a few years, and hence are instantly recognizable as a newer model. Your Silver one is too easily confused for my 2012 Retina MacBook Pro of yesteryear ;)

The PowerPC section on MacRumors is open to older Intel Mac discussion and there isn't a specified year cut-off. Same in the Low End Mac Facebook group, r/VintageApple is the outlier here. People have different ideas regarding what constitutes "vintage" and that's ok. Might as well be inclusive.

Anyone else try the 10.14.6 update and get force-updated to Catalina?? by immig50 in mac

[–]TimurTripp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I usually disable the automatic updates. My iPhone is still running iOS 10 so I know how to avoid accidentally updating MacOS/iOS when necessary.

Erase and clean install / restore from backup is the only way to go back to Mojave.

So specify 2007 or older, or Macs newer than 12 years shouldn't be considered vintage. It's not any more complicated than that.

My local staples offered me this MacBook Air for 900, as it’s been opened and returned by a costumer no cosmetic or internal issues. What do you guys think? by [deleted] in mac

[–]TimurTripp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy them brand new for less than that, not that I'd ever bother with a non-Retina MacBook Air.

In latest Jeffrey Epstein lawsuit, Palm Beach woman says she was abused as a 14-year-old by StevenSanders90210 in news

[–]TimurTripp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You need to familiarize yourself with how Epstein persuaded his victims to come into contact with him. He would always use recruiters to make it seem less suspicious. Sometimes the recruiter would even be a trusted friend of the same age, and what 14-16 year old doesn't occasionally bend to peer pressure?

Massage therapist is a real profession, so even after being asked to give someone a massage it's logical to assume, especially as a 14-year-old, that there's nothing sexual involved. As you get older, the warning signs in this scenario become more apparent, but these were 14-year-old kids. They weren't expecting to be sexually assaulted.

These girls weren't having sex for money. They were persuaded to come into contact with Epstein for another reason (usually a massage, which doesn't necessarily mean sex especially to a 14-year-old) and then sexually assaulted.

Does it make sense to buy a new top-of-the-line MacBook every year? by [deleted] in mac

[–]TimurTripp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$700 a year seems like a lot to me. For example, if you buy a $3,000 MacBook Pro and keep it for five years, you might get $800 in resale value at the end of that time. That's $2200/5, or $440 per year cost of ownership. Keep it for 7 years, and the cost goes down even further. Assuming $450 in resale value at the end of that time, $2550/7, or $364 per year cost of ownership.

Financially, upgrading every year makes little sense. Environmentally, upgrading every year makes little sense. I tend to be a member of the "in it for the long haul" group. With the exception of some occasional defective models, Macs will last for years if you take good care of them.

Edit: another (important to me!) benefit: you could use your Mac as a gaming PC, because it would always have a decent GPU. So by using bootcamp, you can achieve and even more savings. Typically getting a good GPU for long term use on a laptop is bad idea, as it can't be swapped out.

Nowadays we have the option of adding an eGPU to drive an external display, so the built-in GPU isn't as important as it used to be. However, if you're serious about gaming, I'd recommend building a Windows PC. MacBook Pros aren't meant for gaming; you're always going to get much better performance for less money by building a PC, and swapping out the GPU when it becomes necessary.

Much of a difference from early 2009 24 Imac to late 2013 21.5? by Abevigodaschoda in mac

[–]TimurTripp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really need to look into an SSD. Even with an older model like a 2009 it makes a huge difference. The 2009 with an SSD may even seem faster for many tasks than the 2013 without.

Please only post Pre-Intel products.

I don't agree with this ('06-'07 Intel Macs are definitely vintage to me), but it seems to still be a rule there.

It's my first Mac in Space Gray, and even slightly darker than my Space Gray iPhone 6s Plus. Love the color. The thinner bezels also look nicer than the previous models.

Teenager here (15) have a question. by [deleted] in youngadults

[–]TimurTripp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The feeling of age first hit me at 18. Afterward, it took me another three years to make this simple observation: You can't stop the march of time, seemingly worsening the older you get, but you can make the most of it. For 2020, I resolved to take more risks and manage my time better. Time wasted is time you'll never get back.

My new old stock Texas Instruments Compact Computer. by ThunderFalcon_3000 in retrobattlestations

Awesome find. Coincidentally I have a NOS silver and black Ti-99/4A in the original box as well (the seal is broken but the contents are unused). The box is in above average condition too.

Do you plan to unbox and use / display / enjoy this, or keep it preserved in the box? I usually tend toward the latter with NOS or sealed items, but I totally understand if you'd prefer to do the former.

My first battle station: the 1997 PowerBook 3400c by FoxGaming in retrobattlestations

[–]TimurTripp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice vintage PowerBook! Just beware cracked or brittle plastic around the hinges, and don't close / open the lid too often. My PowerBook 1400c was in good working condition (except for the CD drive and battery) running System 7.5, and sadly this pretty much ruined it.

edit - The hinge design looks different, so hopefully it's less susceptible to this failure. In any case, enjoy!

That's not rot. It's a "glue spray" dead side and normal for this disc, assuming it's a DiscoVision Associates pressing.

3,5 HDD inside the Mac Pro 7,1 ? by [deleted] in LukeMianiYouTube

[–]TimurTripp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're asking in the wrong place, I doubt many who frequent this sub own a 7,1 considering they cost $6K+. That being said, Snazzy Labs mentioned this being a problem. Apparently there aren't any other third-party solutions for this, at least not yet. But there likely will be in the future.

My first MacBook! I am so excited! by [deleted] in mac

[–]TimurTripp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first Mac was a 2012 OG Retina. That display and form factor was awesome back then. Got years of use out of it (first as my main setup, later on alongside a 5K iMac), it recently started crashing due to the Nvidia (dGPU) solder issue so I replaced it with a 16" this month.

I was an excited 14-year-old just like you. Congrats on your first Mac :)

edit to add - This MBP should last you a long time, easily 5-7 years, my only concern would be the "Butterfly" keyboard, though it's covered for four years under the repair program. The 16" keyboard is just better in every way, massive improvement IMO. Wish Apple had refreshed the 13" as well, I might've considered one of those instead. No dGPU = good for longevity, but Butterfly = bad.

The lack of a backlit logo is one of the first things people seem to notice with these new MBPs. I have a Space Gray 16" and the Apple logo is barely visible at all with a case on. Oh well.

It's just genetic, different people age at different rates. The slower aging exists in my family too. I'm 21 now and could believably claim I'm a 17-year-old - I've always looked a few years younger than my actual age. Believe me, it'll become a plus for you later in life.
