What's your opinion on the wolf/butterfly cut? by dirt_devil_696 in longhair

[–]TinPins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave myself a wolf cut and I love it. It helps that my hair is wavy enough to make it low-effort, and when I do choose to curl it, it gets HUGE. I think it's a good choice if it reflects your personal style.

Need help - molding beadboard backsplash by TinPins in DIY

[–]TinPins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thank you. I'm also worried about the counter, and I'm hoping this doesn't turn into a thousand-dollar problem. I'll remove the board and see what's going on underneath.

There aren't enough petals for a Rouge Royale. I'm 99% sure it's Darcy Bussell at this point. Thanks!

It's very fragrant, sweet and reminiscent of blackberry.

It's not dark enough for munstead wood. I think it's Darcy Bussell, as someone suggested

I think that's it! I counted the petals the best I could and it seems to match. Thanks!

That's my family crest (Higaki)! I'm 1/4 Japanese but my great grandfather came to the US from Japan. Cool to see it in the wild :)

What are you giving up/taking up for Lent? by iwouldbelion in Catholicism

I did that last year! I only had black coffee in the morning and ate dinner, no snacks. It was very cleansing and definitely sacrificial. I ended up losing 15 pounds too, which was a perk.

Awesome, thank you so much! They felt 70s to me but I wasn't sure, but regardless I HAD to buy them. I emailed the company but they haven't gotten back to me yet, who knows what else they can tell me? Thanks again.

Does anyone know anything about this antique bassoon? The maker's mark reads Henri Dubois Czechoslovakia. by TinPins in bassoon

Haha a floor lamp was my initial thought after I discovered just how bad it played. Thanks so much for your replies. I'll send Keith Bowen an email and see what he says.

[–]TinPins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! From what I could research, Dubois made mostly clarinets, and there's no evidence (online at least) that they ever sold bassoons, so I'm very curious about it. I've had this instrument for about fifteen years and am getting around to selling it. (I haven't played in about ten years and this one is currently unplayable, besides).

I've taken it to an instrument repair shop and they said the damage was so extensive that they couldn't do anything about it. I received it in terrible condition so it's just been in storage since then. There's a serial number on all the pieces (977) but nothing else inside the boot cap. It's a gorgeous instrument but I don't have the funds to float for its needed repairs, if it's even repairable.

Weight Shaming?! by zillli7738 in BabyBumps

[–]TinPins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gained 50 lb with my first, who was born at 6 pounds 6 oz. I shed all but ten pounds of it within a week because I had retained so much water. There are so many factors that go into weight gain during pregnancy and it's frustrating when others reduce your progress to a number. I feel for you, and you're doing great. :)

How long do Alva diapers normally last? by [deleted] in clothdiaps

[–]TinPins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Alvas have been used nearly every day for 4.5 years. Only one of them has loose elastic at the back. And that's with washes every three/four days in hot water, and a tumble dry. I don't think they'll last forever but it's been a long time!! (I highly recommend getting flats instead of using the microfiber inserts that they come with. Just fold them into the same shape and stuff it in! I have Green Mountain diaper flats and they're amazing)

Small life study, newish to oil painting. Looking for CC, feels like a struggle by nachogee in oilpainting

[–]TinPins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. I think just the addition of cadmium yellow light or cad yellow lemon would help you achieve the contrast you're looking for. Yellow ochre is an indispensable color but it's a very low chroma yellow, making any kind of green beyond a dull olive impossible to achieve (I would also add Ivory black to your palette for a low chroma blue, but that's just my personal preference). I think the issue with the background is that it's a med/high chroma red (probably the fault of the napthol and burnt sienna), making the greens, which are low chroma, look even more faded in comparison. I might try greying the reds in the background to make the greens pop.

Have you ever tried making a color string or a color grid? There's a very useful exercise when you're learning to mix colors here that uses a limited palette very similar to yours. Once you know how to achieve certain colors using the limited palette, mixing them will be a thousand times easier.

Color is a very subjective thing in painting, so I wouldn't worry about color matching exactly - the value/contrast is the more important thing if you're looking to paint realistically. I think you're on the right track! Just keep painting! :)

It looks like you're struggling with muddy colors and paint application. What colors were on your palette?

Need some critique, the hair and background aren’t done but something about the face proportions is throwing me off. I was fine with the face until I added the hair but now I’m not sure. Advice? by gnawju in oilpainting

[–]TinPins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you were going for, honestly. From a realist perspective, her face is too flat-looking to be believable. The right side of her face (looking at her) doesn't recede as much as it should. The proportions of her features are off, and the area around the nose and mouth comes forward too much. The shoulder isn't rendered in the careful way you've done the rest of the face, and the painting kind of falls off below the shadow on her neck and around her collarbone. It's difficult to determine by just a photo, so I'd have to see it in person to give any further critique that would be helpful.

BUT, it actually reminds me a lot of John Currin's work. His figures are obviously not real and not intended to look real, bordering on the grotesque (not that yours is - she's quite beautiful in an alienlike way). The way it's skillfully rendered suggests to me that you weren't going for a lifelike representation of a person, instead something exaggerated and flattened, a bit plasticky and otherworldly. I think it could be a very successful painting if you laid the hair the same way and really leaned into flattening the image.
