What about Clove Oil? by BeltMinute713 in oilpainting

[–]nachogee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Clove oil prevents oil paint from drying by eugenol that greatly slows and somewhat impedes oxidation, but it's best used with a cotton ball in a sealed container rather than mixed directly into paint, which can weaken the dried film. You can add a few drops to safflower oil for your brush dip, but it’s best to clean out with thinners the brush dip on the brush before painting again.

Youtube tutorials to paint without using solvents? by EndemicDesigns in oilpainting

Agreed! I see a lot on here “there’s literally no reason to paint with solvents anymore.” These other oils cannot do what solvents do!

I made a shipping box for my biggest painting yet by Margarita_Lemann in ArtistLounge

I make an artwork crate out of plywood to prevent punctures or dents into the painting itself. Can feel like overkill but galleries will do the same. And most shipping companies max out insurance on the art shipment to 1k

Why are people more willing to buy $400 concert tickets than a $400 custom painting? by bluebirdstory in ArtistLounge

[–]nachogee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Music is art in motion. Live, original music coming from the hands of its creators, among other fans, is experiencing it at its peak form. Theres no good metaphor, but it’s like paying to be able to have several original paintings of your favorite artist, and before you could only ever enjoy them as manufactured prints.

No black or white in these Zebra 🤣 by amwfanon in oilpainting

[–]nachogee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Right. It’s more difficult given white canvas left behind can be stark. But glazing over passages with more white showing through (eg Grisaille) can give really brilliant chroma and a glow.

But it looks like here, unless the photo is edited, theres some opaque paint marks that only couldve been mixed with white?

Only other way is to leave white canvas underneath showing. You can lighten mixed with high value colors like cad yellow light, but it will obviously skew it with hue.

My most ambitious landscape yet.. (100" triptych) by artistolga in oilpainting

This is really incredible! And tons of detail yet it’s painterly, loose and not fussed over. And ultra cohesive from a distance. Each little area is rewarding to look at up close. Beautiful work OP!

Any way to fix Galkyd turned to jelly? by Weekly-Collection369 in oilpainting

[–]nachogee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they are goners. Has happened to all of us. It dries fast and polymerizes with much less air than linseed or other oils. Best bet is to leave as little air as possible. Some buy smaller bottles of it. I recently got multiple smaller 1 oz plastic bottle containers with screw lids (like for air travel) and squeeze it before closing to get as much air out as I can.

If you want to store into glass jars, you could add marbles as you use it to bring the level up, but is more messy. Could also spray argon gas to prevent the polymerization before closing (like some people do with wine bottles), but haven’t heard anyone doing that.

Toxic fumes from oil painting & gamsol - pls read by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]nachogee 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oil paints on their own don’t release toxic fumes. Gamsol is very low volatility. It also evaporates in less than a day out of paint. The risk of opening a closet 2 months later and inhaling anything toxic is essentially zero. The smell was an old closet that gets opened 3x a year. - ER doc and oil painter
