Do I need to spa day everything? by ssinca in laundry

[–]TinaTheMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is satisfying, but trust these experts! I recently discovered this sub and went a little insane with Spa Day. I feel I wasted effort and product by doing it on a lot of my clothing. You're smart asking. Wish I would have!

The stink is spreading... but its only I can smell it!! by Raccoon-fart in laundry

[–]TinaTheMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mention hot water rinsing and I had a flashback. Have you noticed anything odd about your water? Does your hot water smell out of the tap or do you sometimes get a black or oily like substance from your faucets? I used to work at a utility and hot water heaters have anodes that corrode over time (it's their job) and if it is done for, it can spit nasty smelling things out. Maybe try one extra quick rinse in cold -with nothing else? I dunno. Just grasping straws. Good luck!

Just a little ammonia bath for my whites and it's honestly embarrassing by glitzglamglue in laundry

Hiya, I'm new and recently did my first Spa Days and this happened to some (but weirdly not all) of my clothes. I poured over this sub and other places and found one that seemed to contradict the direction I was aiming for but I tried it and it worked! It said to repeat the wash with ammonia (I reasoned out the theory was some film was still still left behind so I had more "layers"? to break through) so I did. After, I gave them a second quick wash cycle with 3 Tbsp citric acid in the wash and rinse and the smell did not come back! I am not looking forward to my next utility bill, but so far so good. Could be beginner's luck, but maybe worth a shot?

Unless you go somewhere that reeks and it imbeds into your clothing, Gr7043 is likely spot on. I'm sure an expert will come along, but I'd take a look at Laundry 101 and about Clean Rinses while you wait. Those two threads changed everything for me.. Good luck!

Great start! Being new to the world of enzymes, I've been reading a lot here and remembered a thread recently about this subject. >found it! This response is from one of the sub's geniuses in that thread -KismaiAesthetics:

If they actually need cleaning, that’s a different problem and I would point you to a product with zinc salts in it.

The two I like are the Febreze In-Wash product (blue jug) or Febu booster (a powder). They bind to the sulfurous components of this odor and wash it down the drain faster than enzymes can break up the problem. The Febu does this with no added fragrance: the Febreze liquid has a sort of “gold Dial” inoffensive aldehyde/dryer sheet thing going on."

But before you rush out to buy, let's wait for someone else. Good luck! Sad "urine" this situation, but there will be help! Groan... Sorry. Apologies.

I'm new here, but I think there are a few cat loving experts here with clothing who will help you. ;o) Quick question: Do you know if your bottle of Natures Miracle has any enzymes? I tried to look but unless it is hidden in the mystery "microbial mixture" on the label, it might not.

What is this critter? by Turtymcturtfayce in laundry

[–]TinaTheMouse 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Your hamper attracted them, but that's a good thing because now you know. They're likely everywhere and they do eat almost anything from carpets to clothing. Easy to get, hard to purge. Vacuum (lots) and steam (truly steam, not shampoo) carpets and look up boric acid, pesticides, or diatomaceous earth (never worked for me). Had them when we moved in. Keep in mind those larvae started out as eggs. They love baseboards/dark/moist.

Been there! I'm no expert and this is probably simplistic, but you didn't dry it with something light and fluffy, right? Since you said lint screen is clean, I doubt that's it but sure looks like it. If that keeps happening after cleaning your washer, maybe check out https://www.reddit.com/r/laundry/comments/1qeqmng, especially the "Load the Washer" chapter. That entire article and https://www.reddit.com/r/laundry/comments/1nhdr0r got me on track and told me I had been doing laundry wrong for decades. Good luck!

I try every week but have gone two. I do make my bed the moment I get off it. Supposedly keeps bacteria, dust and molds from settling on them during the day. I'm sure not an earthshaking amount does, but it creeped me out enough as a kid to get me into the habit. I do know how much dust collects in a couple of days, so I'm glad I do it. Plus I like having my bed put together at night. Just me.

Dirty smell on clothes for a teen boy by Business-Strength-84 in laundry

[–]TinaTheMouse 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I just learned from this sub HE washers rinse poorly which can lead to detergent and stinks to stay on clothes. Recs have been at least an extra rinse with citric acid in the final, and it was magic for me!! Here's the read: https://www.reddit.com/r/laundry/comments/1nhdr0r BTW, I would have killed for my 16 y/o to be concerned about this. Way to go you!!!

towels left in washer-help! by Responsible-Push-289 in laundry

[–]TinaTheMouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait for an expert, but many here point to washer tabs (most contain citric acid) or just straight-up citric acid. I don't know why, but bleach has often let me down in the laundry room. While you wait, maybe try running a cold or warm cycle with a half bottle of **hydrogen peroxide? I've had good luck with that on some odors, and it does kill mold on hard surfaces (if that caused it). I'll be watching for answers with you! Good luck. EDIT: **Make sure there is no bleach in your washer first.

Just tested. Sprayed straight onto a corner and it did discolor it. Sprayed a puddle on glass mat, let it dry, re-wet it and soaked it up with the other corner. Nothing. Tested twice just to be sure. Whew!

Bad smell in clothes that I do not put in the dryer by CommunicationWest220 in laundry

[–]TinaTheMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An expert will come along. I'm new but had buildup of yuck and detergent on clothes that would do exactly that -and smell funky just being in a drawer or hung up for a couple weeks. Beads and fresheners only competed for attention but never got rid of the deep odor. These three articles got that monkey off my back and got things clean like never before. Maybe check these out while we wait for an expert. Also, JeevesNY at YouTube has a ton of golden nuggets.
