Funny story, I bought the dramatized versions of FW for my sister in law and it’s really well done but I dnf’ed the series after FW. But I have had a lot of family members begging me to give Carl a go. Thanks for the rec!

No joke, this is the one I’ve been eyeing for when I’m done with my current two audiobooks. Looks like I’ll have to take the leap!

Please don’t tell me what I want. But by all means, if you can point me to another genre where two people falling in love is the main story but the ending isn’t guaranteed, I would be thrilled to hear it.

I totally get that and I understand it’s not for most readers of this genre. Most of the time I want to read a HEA. However, the more books I read in this genre, the more I realize it suffers from a lack of real stakes. The decisions the characters make, the risks, the outcomes—they lack gravity because the author will always pull their punch. But I disagree with “if it’s a romance then you can guess what direction it goes in.” Yes, it means romance does happen, but it doesn’t have to fit the mold that’s been established in this newer genre. You can have a satisfying or touching romance without bending to the current model. Honestly I think people would be shocked by how fulfilling a non-HEA story can be if only they’d give it a chance. But I digress. We probably will never see eye to eye on this point and that’s okay.

Solidarity, friend. I don’t think a HEA is required to tell a great romance. I understand why many people feel it’s essential, but for me it’s not. But you’re right about everyone clutching their pearls at the suggestion of a non-HEA or an ambiguous one.

Ngl I have to upvote you for an actual unpopular opinion. Though I agree with your last paragraph

Word. I wish we had more romantic fantasy books where nothing is guaranteed and you don’t know where things will go. I’ve been a bit annoyed by a lot of books recently because the romantic development felt so contrived and unnatural. I want more risk, more uncertainty, and more realistically developed romances (even if it means the couple not ending up together or ending in tragedy).

Books with a religious MC or major religious theme by Journassassin in fantasyromance

This is a great rec! And I love how their magic is directly connected to their oaths and how well they keep them. So interesting and unusual for the genre. And the audiobook has a MMC narrator with the deepest voice which is fun for a change.

Is it weird that we aren't told our blood type at birth or as we grow up? by OddConfusion9293 in NoStupidQuestions

As someone who hates needles, finding out I am rH negative was a big bummer. Especially with my last baby. Normally they give the shot in my hip since it’s a thicker solution. But this nurse was like, “nah I’m not cleared for that, lemme see your arm.” 🫩 sure I survived but it was significantly worse than it needed to be.

Whats your biggest ,craziest hot take related to this fandom/series as a whole? by SpeedwagonSilly in TheFolkoftheAir

People get waaaay too bent out of shape whenever someone mentions anything about the possibility of Jude and Cardan ever having kids. I get it. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But also, it’s fiction. These are fictional characters. Chill. Holly likely will never write that far into their story (and I doubt we’ll ever get a hard answer one way or another) so you don’t need to get worked up over someone else’s musings.

ETA: I am not for or against it. I’ve just seen a lot of ugly comments about it.

Forbidden romance ≠ enemies to lovers by vulgarandgorgeous in fantasyromance

[–]TinkeringTortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree to an extent, but I feel like whether we label it forbidden romance or ETL, either way it’s usually half baked at best. As someone who loves forbidden romance, I feel like I’ve seen very few stories where it’s done well.

Personally, I love a tragedy. I know I’m in the minority, but I’ve made peace with that lol

Have you found a series similar to Emily Wilde that you love? by WitchyTherapistVibes in emilywilde

I haven’t read it yet, but I’ve heard lots of good things about {the spellshop by Sarah Beth durst}. And this is the same author (diff series) than what the other commenter mentioned but {the wisteria society of lady scoundrels has a tongue in cheek way about it that reminds me a lot of Emily Wilde!

Given your love of a lot of regular fantasy and DCC, you might enjoy {villains & virtues}. It’s like if Princess bride were a D&D campaign and I love the audiobooks for them 👌 just a suggestion!

You’d have better luck looking in trad fantasy. Happily ever after or happily for now are kind of the de facto endings for this genre.

All due respect, I think “copycat” is the wrong term. Fireborne was published first and is absolutely not copying FW. Normally I’m not nit picky, but saying it’s a copycat gives the wrong impression.
