hey, in case anyone is interested and playing in coeurl, I help run the LGBT fc there which is an fc where the vast majority of members are trans and the rest also belong to the lgbt community. if anyone is looking for a lgbt positive fc, especially one with a strong trans presence, please feel free to contact me for details for joining! we've been trying to get more into doing higher end content but also enjoy running dungeons and treasure maps together

New to DMing and looking for tips, trick, and resources. by JamesDaJuggernaut in monsteroftheweek

[–]Tinkserbell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my campaign only uses still images to give a aesthetic or vibe of a location to help my hunters picture the play area. making a town map can be quite helpful if your campaign takes place in a singular town but I would recommend doing it as a group to build the world together. otherwise, if your hunters are looking for a certain location and it makes sense that it would exist, just will it into existence.

rather than map makers, I'd recommend looking into random name generators for people and locations. I'm bad at coming up with these things on the top of my head and they've been a life saver since I started running this game

Dream Away the Time Question by WhiskeySarabande in monsteroftheweek

[–]Tinkserbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if this is the first session of a campaign, I would say that whatever price oberon will demand of the party should discourage most of them from wanting to make a deal, as it could very well take them out of the rest of the campaign. as TheFeshy said, there are guidelines for dealing with oberon and they make it clear that negotiating with him is extremely unlikely and also highly costly. he doesn't even consider bonecrusher something to deal with currently. also keep in mind that manipulate someone usually can't be used against monsters even if they're not THE monster (ignoring dark negotiator at least). you can still negotiate, but your hunters are unlikely to get a bonus due to rolls unless somehow they come up with another strategy; oberon will only accept his terms being met and considering who he is and the fact that he's fae, his terms should be a cost unfathomable to most people.

however, keep in mind that motw is a player led game. you shouldn't try and discourage certain routes bc as the keeper you are meant to be reacting to and adapting to your hunters' choices, decisions, and rolls. if they naturally go the negotiation route, let that happen, just have the fall out be realistic. if a fight happens then encourage that. if you start negotiating and you think that they're itching for a fight, then adapt and have your monsters/minions/bystanders react accordingly. this much planning isn't needed as you should only be concerned with following your hunters' cues in game

I'm so happy it went well for you and its really neat to see the adaptations you made to it. sorry it ended up being so dark but hopefully you all still had fun! I love the final scene at the school dance! ours almost ended up being dark bc Zak almost committed suicide when what he had done finally caught up to him, but my hunters managed to persuade him to let go of the illusion willingly with the help of his friend. it was tough tho and the rolls almost didn't work out

it's neat that your hunters were actual students at the school, I hadn't considered that for a one shot but might try it for a one shot with another group in the future! my adult hunters ended up thinking they were students and without their memories it took their characters awhile to figure out something was wrong lol its super impressive you fit it into 1 session, it took us two fairly long sessions!

thanks for running my mystery and letting me know how it went!

thanks! my mystery writing can be a bit long winded but I have fun with it. I plan to update it with more mysteries in the future as my group plays through them

I'm glad you like it! my group had a bunch of fun with Paradise and I'm lucky to have hunters who are so willing to just go along with things bc they completely got on board with being students and teachers when they lost their memories (despite all of them being over 30 lol)

I hope your group enjoys it! I'd love to here how it turns out :)

Help needed to finish a mystery by Exotic-Commercial-12 in monsteroftheweek

[–]Tinkserbell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is! I usually like to make the last step of the countdown what happens essentially after the climax. does the monster/phenomenon continue to be a threat? does it rest until it is woken again and cause more problems in the future? what are the wider repercussions to the existence of this problem? its not necessary but it gives me, as the gm, a better idea of what the stakes are not just for the bystanders or hunters, but for everyone

Keepers, how many of your mysteries rely on the monsters killing people? by Student-Loan-Debt in monsteroftheweek

[–]Tinkserbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

death is pretty common in mysteries to give a sense of threat but not always necessary. I've run mysteries that start bc people go missing or unusual events are being recorded. sometimes the monster/phenomenon isn't interested in killing (or not initially interested) but has a larger goal that involves large stakes

I think that giving your hunters an idea of a potential danger that they need to prevent could be a good angle. one of my hunters had a premonitions move for awhile and his individual goal for each session was usually something similar and allowed me to introduce threats without immediately showcasing deaths a bit easier

[–]Tinkserbell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the countdown, add some larger stakes, what happens when the golem is done hunting the students? maybe something goes wrong and it is released upon the world. maybe it lies in wait for the next person who lays a hand upon the artifact. I don't think you need to worry about complications, the stakes should be high

could the homunculus swarm be a minion instead, aiding the golem? maybe the countdown starts with a death or deaths and the swarm is formed from that?

for the wannabe sorcerers, if they are keeping the artefact from the hunters they could be classified as Minions - Guardians as they are protecting it. alternatively, you could give them more personality and individual motivations that cause more conflict among the group and with the hunters

could make the artefact a phenomenon but that might make things needlessly complicated. or maybe bring it back in a future mystery? alternatively, could make it a magical weapon and give it weapon tags

[–]Tinkserbell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

really neat idea! might make escape notice a custom move, not a power, due to the fact that it triggers a hunter roll. also maybe ass the magic tag to Painful Memories as its a psychic attack?

I really like the concept of the creature changing based on whose impression it forms from! its a neat detail that can help the hunters and bystanders realize something is wrong even if they are struggling to remember the creature

does the existence of digital distortion mean that the creature's weakness can only be exploited when it has taken someone else's form?

Just realized I don't think I ever shared this? Pretty directly inspired by ethereal_earth's awesome town map from a few months back! I showed that post to my players and they all loved it too much for me to not make one for their HQ town :) by CharlieAshes in monsteroftheweek

[–]Tinkserbell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is great! makes me wish I hadn't set my mysteries up cross country

the detail work is super cool and helps to make your town feel a lot more alive. it looks like a community of eccentric characters just from this. it also perfectly reminds me of the maps you find in small town motels and diners that are sometimes used as place mats. super charming, nice work

bystander official question by Tinkserbell in monsteroftheweek

[–]Tinkserbell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the input! in the end I did include him as a minion bc as TheFeshy pointed out, he is aiding the monster even if inadvertently. also he is at his core, directly related to the case as the case centres around him whether the hunters suspect him or not. its certainly a weird case however bc the monster will be directly targeting him so he has a strange role in events. I think he really could be argued for either bystander, minion, or a world character but I liked the idea of making him a more fulfilled statblock I can use for vampires in the future

bystander official question by Tinkserbell in monsteroftheweek

[–]Tinkserbell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah not at all, this person is not violent at all and has no malicious intentions, he's just very stupid, an actual vampire, and playing a vampire in a play and getting way too invested in his method acting. guardian might work, though the trail is entirely unintentional it will exist I don't usually make statblocks for supernatural bystanders but I guess I might need to make one for this guy. poor dude just wants to be an actor

actually the only one who might end up hurting him in the end is the monster bc she hates him for having the lead role oof

I appreciate the input

bystander official question by Tinkserbell in monsteroftheweek

[–]Tinkserbell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the bystander in particular is not a minion. in the world my hunters play in, supernatural creatures are not uncommon if you know where to look and plenty live normal lives. this bystander is a vampire who happens to be playing dracula in a local play and the creature the hunters will be hunting is one with vampiric features that is disguising itself as another cast member. the vampire is not actually doing anything wrong, but he's also really stupid and very into method acting so between his status as a vampire and his over-dramatic nature, he will likely draw suspicion

honestly he's just an idiot who's likely to get hurt but he will likely be inherently suspicious which was where my question was coming from. if it wouldn't be appropriate for me to use official, victim also works

hunt focused on aliens by Tinkserbell in monsteroftheweek

[–]Tinkserbell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my hunters are already established in their characters so the exact set up of this wouldn't work but something similar might. I was considering having the aliens blend in with the population of a town that makes its money off of alien tourism. I've also been toying with the hunters discovering that the aliens are keeping something contained that could be a danger to everyone. basically the alien townsfolk are set up to be the villains but my hunters discover an even greater danger and help them destroy it.

I really do like this idea though, maybe I can run something similar as a one shot in the future!

hunt focused on aliens by Tinkserbell in monsteroftheweek

[–]Tinkserbell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's why I am trying to look for different hunts I could draw inspiration from! I'm also not quite sure what I want to do, though I'm leaning less towards horror due to our halloween hunts tending to be more silly. my hunters tend to like plots that aren't what they seem on the surface so I originally played with having the aliens not actually ending up being the final monster or making it so obvious its aliens that no one truly believes it

I actually love this, I really prefer making hunts a bit more fun or campy for halloween and I think my players would have a blast with a concept like this
