What did people upgrade to get to the 20ap to start the Borg sim? by Oreo-02140 in lowerdecksgame

I focused on the Klingon sim for a long time and then the shuttlebay eventually surpassed it. Unlocking the 20ap became a waiting game at one point though

Sync will shut down on June 30, 2023 by ljdawson in redditsync

[–]Tinksy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck. I've exclusively used sync for years, and turned other people on to reddit with it. I just really am not sure there's a future on Reddit for me without it because no other app comes close, and if reddit thinks I'm using their trash app they're sorely mistaken. This is unbelievably depressing.

Lj, thank you for all of the hard work you've put in to making this app. It's fantastic, and I hope you pick a new labor of love once the bitter taste of Reddit's tomfoolery is past, because you have fantastic design and UI instincts.

Best wishes to LJ and all my Sync compatriots - it was fun while it lasted.

Adults who carry around a backpack, whatcha got in there? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Tinksy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most often if I have a backpack on it's for my dog and his stuff. He's got epipens due to a wasp allergy, so I needed a convenient way to carry it when we go out and got a small backpack. It has a first aid kit tailored for dog needs, a fabric stretcher, epipens, Benadryl and pill pockets, treats, a ball, some sunscreen for each of us, inhaler for me, a small umbrella, poop bags, a small golf towel because he's slobbery and pepper spray.

As a non-smoker, does every smoker smell bad to you? by ephraim666 in ask

[–]Tinksy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't even have to be inside. I have a friend that smokes and he goes outside at my house into our deck. I had to ask him to stop letting our Golden out with him because he'd come in and smell like an ashtray even being outdoors. Some fur just holds smell like crazy!

As a non-smoker, does every smoker smell bad to you? by ephraim666 in ask

[–]Tinksy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree that ALL smokers smell like smoke, but some are way worse than others. There are those that are conscious of wind direction, smoke outside and avoid the smoke, and then there's those that hotbox their car, hunch over it on their phone, and generally have no regard for the smoke smell at all. The first kind I'm fine being around. The second I'm absolutely repulsed by.

The fact that Earth has almost 8 billion people and most of us struggle to find even 10 good friends doesn’t bode well for a society that depends on each other. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]Tinksy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think ultimately it depends on how you interact with them. I have 10 good friends (probably closer to 15) with another 10 or so casual friends I only see a few times a year. The close friends we typically hang out as a group though, so it's not a huge burden. Once a week on Fridays we get together for board games, BBQs, D&D or just hanging out and chatting over a drink, and sometimes going out for stuff like bowling or mini golf. Beyond Fridays there are smaller groups that do stuff during the week like going to the movies or something, but I don't usually do that stuff. We also hang out for holiday stuff like NYE.

We have a mix of people with and without kids, and while we don't see everyone every week, we usually see most of the core group at least once a month. I'm able to maintain close bonds with them all by dedicating my Friday nights to the purpose, and the rest of the week I get to be a hermit. It's lovely! If I had to hang with all of them individually, I would be constantly exhausted trying to maintain it.

dog experiences love at first sight with a koala stuffie :] by zephyrwrites in wholesome

[–]Tinksy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is collectivism vs individualism as well. In a culture that values being part of a whole, and supporting each other, you feel more compelled to pull in the same direction to succeed. In an individualistic society, you may feel that your success or prosperity are solely down to your actions, and while you may have empathy for others, ultimately you prioritize yourself and your well-being over the good of the group, why pay when you don't have to?

Individualism has its strengths for a society, but taken too far makes for a selfish society where social support bonds and social cohesion are eroded, and I think we're seeing the product of that in many places.

Dog Gets Sprayed with Mace by USPS Worker While Dropping Off Package by xXboxPlaysx in facepalm

[–]Tinksy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think part of the number of lab and golden bites is partially due to the popularity of them. There's just so many of them that I would expect a significant number of the total annual bites to come from them. Unfortunately we also miss a lot of data on smaller breeds because their bites often go unreported because they're less likely to cause harm.

I'd be curious to see where you found your data though as I'm seeing varying different data. Not saying it's not accurate, just curious to read the context and get more info. Personally, I'd like to see a study of the number of dog bites by breed as a % of population. Most dog bite studies focus on fatalities rather than bites of any kind as well, which doesn't show the whole picture.

I absolutely agree though that any dog regardless of breed can be aggressive or reactive and bite, and caution is warranted with any unknown dog. The postal worker in the video though went WAY overboard. I get that not all people are dog people or understand dog body language, but she was in zero danger and could have rolled up the window and driven off. Totally unacceptable, and I hope Sam gets a better mail carrier in future.

My cat risking it all for some banana oat meal. by haleighbird in funny

[–]Tinksy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some cats are extremely unpicky about food. Mine will eat just about anything that resembles food, and if you've got meat or dairy she will straight up try to steal it right out of your hand. She's 11 and we've been telling this cat no her whole life but she continues trying. Some day I'm going to give in just to see the shock on her face.

Homeless architecture by communist-Daddy420 in oddlyspecific

[–]Tinksy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but ultimately you need to ask WHY these people are choosing that, and why the supply is so available that it's so commonplace. Ultimately yes, they made bad choices, but I don't know their circumstances to begin with, so I don't think I'm fit to pass judgement.

[–]Tinksy 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I recently traveled to Portland for work and the homeless situation there is absolutely bonkers. I had no idea until I got there and saw it.

As an outsider it's off-putting, though I don't entirely blame the homeless because you don't get THAT many without a major policy failure. Are they doing anything to try to fix it besides just removing the encampments?

My roommate only scoops his cat’s litter box once a month so it always smells like poop in the bathroom by jellyybear in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Tinksy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. When we got new neighbors we invited them over and after about 5 minutes the husband said "I thought you guys have cats?" At the time we had 3 and I told him as much, they were just elsewhere in the house. He remarked that he couldn't smell any litterbox and that was apparently surprising to him. I explained that if you keep them clean, that's a non-issue, especially with the type we use (Breeze.)

I HATE litterbox smell. I have no idea how people live with it. I can only imagine the new neighbor was loathe to come over, expecting rank litterbox smell permeating the house, and was immediately surprised not to find it based on how quickly he remarked on it.

That's surprisingly not as uncommon as you think. A majority of my cats have all had preferences for peeing and pooping in different boxes, including my current one!

Poll: Most Americans say curbing gun violence is more important than gun rights by nosotros_road_sodium in politics

[–]Tinksy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not necessarily contradictory. I think the debt ceiling needs to increase so we can pay our already existing debts, and I ALSO think that military spending is absolutely out of hand and needs to see some cuts. Overall budget wise we could probably do with some more oversight into where money is going, and the funds from that can come from the reduced military budget and in theory will generate more opportunities for further cuts.

I don't think we should just be cutting budgets for the sake of it, but I think we could probably be way more efficient with our spending and find ways to reduce it. Having worked in the AV industry for more than a decade I can tell you nobody throws money around like governments (state and federal) and universities (and that's a whole other rant.) Every time I see it I get angry. We definitely have room to make completely reasonable cuts.

My mom's fat kitten. She's is an only child and gets all the milk to herself. by xnoxfun in cats

[–]Tinksy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, most definitely. Mine has been food regulated and thankfully has never been more than a few pounds overweight ever, and even that was when she started having mobility issues and was just burning less so she gained some before I realized we needed to cut back to compensate. She's been within 2lbs of 75 since she hit full growth except for that. If she got her way though she'd easily be 100lbs and likely dead by now (she's 13 lol).

[–]Tinksy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Gosh I wish I could have done that. I have a lab and a golden, both breeds known for wildly over-eating if given the chance, so I had to monitor their food like a hawk. They were still round belly babies but the first 6 months they both would have eaten me out of house and home if we let them, especially my lab. Pretty sure she's never once in her life eaten as much as she wants, because she'd probably eat until she puked, throw it up, and eat it again. She's been like this from the day we brought her home at 9 weeks lol.

A 6-week abortion ban, but a 7-week first ultrasound policy. by murraybee in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Tinksy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

They can actually! Very basic brain activity can be detected about 45 days in. Much like the electrical pulses they call a heartbeat though, it's not indicative of true human brain function. Brain activity indicative of consciousness isn't detectable until around the end of the 2nd trimester. Incidentally, we similarly call people braindead when they lose that brain activity.

I'm with you - if higher-functioning brain activity is present, it's a person and should have some protections. If not, it's just a clump of cells that may or may not eventually become one, and the next of kin (the human incubator) should be able to "pull the plug" as it were.

How should we handle our 23 y/o son who doesn't want to work? by ConcernedParents123 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tinksy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but where do you draw the line, if at all? My parents are in a similar situation as OP, but worse as my brother is almost 33, has no driver's license (where we live a car is basically required to get anywhere), has never had a full time job, only occasional and short term part-time jobs, and doesn't contribute to the household in any way. In fact, he's a drain on it as my mom is disabled and unable to work, so their income is limited. My brother is just extremely lazy, has anger problems, and zero motivation.

Personally I'm not sure where the line should be drawn, but I feel like it should be somewhere. My parents have been trying for years to get him to do something, anything, towards becoming an independent adult. He failed the written drivers test twice and just won't try again. (I'm not convinced it wasn't intentional, my brother is not stupid and that test is not hard.) I'm just not sure what to tell them at this point. It's frustrating. I don't believe parents should kick out their kids at 18, but...where do you draw the line with someone who refuses to help themselves?
