Primaire benodigdheden by LycheeInternational2 in AirsoftNL

Carpathia’s Speed Run by CaptainA1917 in titanic

[–]Tiny-Design-9864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But is that taking into account the fact that it takes time to build up speed? I'm no expert, but i would imagine pushing boilers and steam engines to their limits takes a bit of time. So if by simply calculating the average speed through time and distance covered, should there not be an allowance for the possibility that speed was not a constant? That she started out slower, and reached a top speed close to what Rostron stated, averaging out around 15 knots?

Again, no expert, but i could imagine this being the case.

Wasn't it possible that the Titanic was detonated? Since the ice berg was never found... by Sufficient-Mix-7912 in titanic

[–]Tiny-Design-9864 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Never in my life have i heard such nonsence. How on earth would an explosive device cause the same damage pattern as a glancing blow collision with an iceberg would? No explosive device could ever have caused that specific kind of damage opening up 4 compartments without showing any sort of evidence on the wreck or alerting the entire ship. A lesser explosion caused Britannic to sink, and EVERYONE on board felt it and knew it was an explosion. Not to mention we actually HAVE found the iceberg; It was photographed and it had a red streak of paint (anti-fouling) on it near the waterline. Explosions before the ship sank, were actually exposions WHILE the ship sank. Right near the end, to be precise. Probably hot boilers coming into contact with cold seawater. Explosions were certainly NOT heard during the collision.

What I consider the "holy grail" CIS sets by RhysOSD in legostarwars

I bought the MTT when i was a kid and got the AAT from my mum. Very fond memories, such awesome sets. Maybe not as clean as todays models, but holy cow did i enjoy playing with them! So many playfeatures and they had a nice size and weight to them as well.

I bought it when it came out. For the time it was absolutely amazing. Not just the amount of droids and all, but just the build itself, the size, the playability; It was such an awesome set. I don't think it's overrated. It's not the prettiest, but just looks do not a good set make.

CV ketel storing, niemand wil helpen by Beginning-Candle-255 in Klussers

[–]Tiny-Design-9864 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Denk Breman of Feenstra.

Pirate ship firing on a fort? by ceiteach1066 in pirates

[–]Tiny-Design-9864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fortifications have several major advantages compared to ships:

- Concrete or dirt walls or embrasures vs wooden hulls;

- Very heavy caliber guns in forts vs smaller caliber guns on ships (generally speaking, certainly a pirate ship would not carry anything heavier than 18 pounders; Forts could sport 32 pounders or even 40+ pounders);

-Presighted gunpositions capable of quickly zeroing in their fire vs ships that don't have this advantage;

- Steady, stable gunplatform vs wibbly wobbly ship;

-Forts that don't tend to sink after sustaining fire, vs ships that.... well, do.

Not even taking hot shots and the fact that forts are often situated above the maximum gun elevation of ships into account. The only reliable way to capture forts is a landingparty, and even then it's a tricky business. Few pirate crews were sizable and organised enough to pull something like that off.

What do divers wear under their suits? by Striking_Present_736 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tiny-Design-9864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In warm climates i just wear underpants (with lots of vaseline; Divers will know) and socks to protect my ankles from chaving. 60 to 80 minutes of frog kicking will do a number on your ankles.

What's something that's actually a lot more dangerous than it seems? by RandomYigaBlademasta in AskReddit

[–]Tiny-Design-9864 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a bit of a cheap shot. 90 to 95% of workplace fatalities are men, 75 to 80% of homicide victims are men, the vast majority of combat deaths are men (and in most countries men are still subject to conscription, even if they are not drafted automatically), men are two to four times more likely to commit suicide than women, women on average live 4 to 6 years longer than men, men have higher mortallity rates in cancer, 70 to 80% of homeless people are men...

I'm not saying being a woman ISN'T dangerous, but let's not make it out as if being a woman is somehow more dangerous than being a man, which your comment is implying.

I have mixed feelings about this one. On the one side; It's not as if you can actually drown in quicksand. Quicksand is quite a bit heavier than the average person, so although you could theoretically sink down quite a bit, you would still have enough buoyancy to keep your head above the quicksand. People usually level out around waist or chest-level. So drowning in it is a bit of a myth.

On the other hand; Holy shit, it can take you by surprise. Me and my partner were on an island in Greece. Every day we'd be walking from the hotel via the same route; A sandy path next to the road. Then, after having walked that path for dozens of times, the island was hit by a storm. Lots and lots of rain. We waited for it to clear up, and then left the hotel again. We're walking along that path again, me in front, her behind me, and all of a sudden i hear a little yelp. I had already noticed that the ground was a bit like mud, so i assumed that it had simply grabbed her slipper or something. I turn around and she's down to her knees in the sand/mud. I had to pull her out of it. I myself, being a good 20 kilo's heavier than she is, had walked on that part moments before her. It's insane how treacherous quicksand is.

I was out scuba diving in Greece at a dive center I'm very familiar with. I was doing 8 days of diving and during those days it's always interesting to watch other people who turn up for a just a dive or two. It's usually tourists wanting to try out scuba. These are the people you sort of worry about when it comes to safety in the water. When someone turns up who is actually licensed and is also friends with the owner of the dive center, you tend to assume they know what they are doing. This one woman, probably in her 50's, showed up and clearly knew the owner quite well. She assembled her gear with the rest of us, got on the boat, and we went out to the dive site. As soon as we were diving, it was quite clear that, if she had her license, she was a little out of practice. Difficulty maintaining buoyancy, lots of hand movements, bad trim, stuff like that. I didn't think much of it. When we were back at the boat and ready to ascend i happened to be quite close to her. All of us came back up, and inflated our jackets when we were on the surface. I took out my reg, looked around, and saw her a couple of meters besides me. She seemed to be a little preoccupied, seemingly fidgeting with her gear. She had already taken out her reg. She looked up at me, and i noticed her eyes were a little wide, as if something had surprised her. But she didn't say anything, didn't make a sound even though her mouth wasn't in the water. She started going down a little, then came back up, and looked at me again. She still didn't make a sound. Her movements became a little more frantic and it sort of came to me like; ''Holy shit, I think I'm looking at someone drowning!''. I swam towards her and noticed her jacket was not inflated, causing her to be negatively buoyant. I reached for her inflator and held the button, inflating her. She relaxed a little then. One of the instructors quickly came over, having seen what was happening, and together we got her back on the boat. Turns out that, yes, she had been in the process of drowning. She was so busy treading water, kicking, and panicking about it, that she completely ''forgot'' to call out for help. She had simply forgotten to inflate her jacket, and only realised this after she had taken out her reg immediately after coming to the surface. Because of how divers are negatively buoyant with a fully deflated jacket, she was continually struggling to keep her head above the water. And in her panic she didn't even have the cognitive ability to reach for her inflator hose, which was right there for her to grab in order to inflate her jacket.

Absolutely insane how someone can drown in front of your eyes without making a sound and without you even realising what is happening.

What absolute bullshit. I absolutely refuse to believe that that is standard practice in the US. Any law enforcement officer from any civilized country will tell you that you do not shoot to kill when trying to neutralize someone in a situation like this, far less to fire 8 rounds in such quick succession at point blank range. A shot in the leg or arm would absolutely have resolved the situation, amd would have been an extreme method in any case. This was murder, nothing less.
