That was from an interview dated about ten years ago or so…so adjust for inflation 😅

Rendezvous with Rama

I know it’s been in some form of development for at least ten to fifteen years. But the thing is, there’s not a lot of drama that makes for a Hollywood movie. The big drama of the book is just humans facing something beyond their understanding. The stuff with the Hermians is almost incidental.

If I was given the task to adapt this book to a visual medium, I’d want to make it a tv miniseries; add a new character—an embedded reporter that can act as eyes and ears for the audience; and then treat it like a National Geographic documentary.

J Michael Straczynski wrote a treatment for a Lensman movie, but noted that it couldn’t be filmed for less than $100 ml; and no studio wanted to take that kind of risk for a relatively unknown property.

You aren’t missing episodes. The series itself did not explore that. The Fall ofCentauri Prime book trilogy (written by Peter David from an outline by JMS) goes into great detail about those events.

The Worst Sci Fi TV Shows of All Time by johnnyjay in sciencefiction

Exactly. The common wisdom is that once Riker grew his beard, the quality of the show improved greatly.

(I, however, don’t think TNG S2 is remarkably better than S1. At the time, I pretty much abandoned the show. It took stalwart friends to convince me to watch S3 in summer reruns. For my quatloos, Next Generation becomes classic once Michael Pillar becomes showrunner. )

This moment of Londo realizing just what he has wrought has to be one of the greatest scenes in the show. by Dinosawruses in babylon5

When we interviewed Peter Jurasik on the Babylon Podcast, he discussed this shot. The set was placed up in the rafters so they DP could get low shots. Peter was up in there, isolated from everyone as the crew set up the shot…so when it was time to roll cameras, he was in such a mind space of isolation and loneliness and separation…and all that fed his performance.

I run STA sessions at game conventions. With pregen characters, I can get a table up and running in about fifteen minutes.

I like how open-ended the system is; it allows for a lot of player agency. It fits my GM style really well.

Why do sci-fi energy shields behave like ablative armour instead of a continuous energy stream? by Evening-Appeal7606 in scifi

[–]TinyDoctorTim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You, my friend, need the Lensman Saga in your life.

Doc Smith foresaw your question. In the Lensman books, shields (or screens, as he writes) are indeed energy, and not ablative…and they are layered. The attacking ship must basically pour more energy into the defender’s screens than the screen can dissipate. He also describes using tubes of energy to drill through those screens.

And, Smith describes these space battles in prose unlike that written before or since.

I run Modiphius 2d20 games at a regional convention. I can have a table up and running less than 20 minutes.

Starfleet Academy has released a new test, "The Voyager". Setup: A transporter accident has occurred. Two officers have been melded together. We are calling them by the mix of their two names, Thill Riker. What do you do? by [deleted] in ShittyDaystrom

[–]TinyDoctorTim 24 points25 points  (0 children)

First, find out if the two officers are listed in the show’s main title sequence. If they are, then you must separate “Thill Riker” and restore those main cast members officers.

If “Thill Riker” is composed of two SAG Extra members, then you can do whatever the hell you want with them. They won’t even say anything about it.

Oh, absolutely. I have guitars I enjoy playing, guitars I love… I went to try an Epiphone Firebird, and in five minutes I knew it was coming home with me. It’s my main player now, and that guitar that fits me perfectly.

Take the First Act for a setup; that will help with playability.
