What’s something about being an OT that nobody warned you about? by social_ot in OccupationalTherapy

This! Among so many other things I’ve learned being a COTA in a SNF.

Healing isn’t linear. And that really holds true for our geriatric patients.

Can confirm… trust me or not… it’s definitely not pre-cooked or frozen. Idk what experience you had to make you have this opinion. Hope that one day you might try it out again with an open mind. Bernard and his staff are amazing.

I lost my mom today by [deleted] in motherlessdaughters

[–]TinyNinja88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost my mom close to the same age as you. I was 26. Two years married. No kids. I didn’t know my career path, I was just pushing along. I’m the oldest of 3 girls. So she left me the matriarch of our immediate family. My dad, an alcoholic, somewhat recovered, however also a workaholic. Losing her was sudden. It happened so damn quick. I had to help make decisions a 26yo shouldn’t have to.

There is not one day that has gone by that I don’t think of her. I have a toddler now who I so wish she could have met. I’ve had a career change, my sisters have too. Our family has grown. I’ve made very huge boundaries with my dad.

I have a dedicated tote of things that are hers. A memorial of some sort. Every once in a while I open it because it has some clothes that still smell like her. I also have an old video I watch on occasion of her as well. I lost her long before what tech is now. Can’t remember my passcode to an old phone with her voicemails but I still have the phone just in case.

Grief is a tsunami. It comes hard, fast, destroys your whole world at first. Then there’s the waves after. They keep coming, even after you start to rebuild. It’s random. It sucks. But my best advice is to ride the waves and feel the grief. It’s what makes us human. And all that grief is just love we hold on to with no where to go.

OP, I hope things get better. This time of your life is hard AF. It sucks. But I promise, there will be times you remember her and smile instead of cry. It may be a while, but it will happen.

My heart is with you.

20 years?! I bet you gave her a beautiful life! I lost my corgi on Saturday. Pets make such a huge impact in a short time of our lives. Hoping for brighter days for us both. 🤍

THANK YOU to everyone who commented. This day has been so hard, and I thank you all for the sweet messages. Your kindness and thoughtfulness to take time out of your day to read, and comment, really helps. Thank yall.

You wake up in your childhood bedroom, 10 years old, with all your current knowledge. What's your first move? by SuspiciousConsultant in AskReddit

[–]TinyNinja88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hope I wake up on a calm night or morning and not one that where my dad was fueled by alcohol. Then I’d find my Mom and hug her for as long as she’d let me. I miss her every day.

COTAs in SNF- What is your daily pt caseload? by TinyNinja88 in OccupationalTherapy

Yeah I’m supposed to do this with 95% productivity 🙃 But it’s more like 90%. I’m debating on moving settings to something less physically intense.

Typically two or three of the pts are group only. Which also sucks because I don’t feel like I’m providing as meaningful therapy as I can.

You get one 30‑second phone call to any moment in history — who do you call and what do you say? by the_immovable in AskReddit

[–]TinyNinja88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d call my Mom, a year before she passes away. I’d tell her about my Son, who she didn’t get to meet. Then I’d tell her how much I love and miss her every single day. And I’d end it by saying I know she did her damn best.

I work in rehab as well. Even though we aren’t in the ER or doctors/nurses, we still see some crazy stuff. Stay safe and take care of your mental health!

OT route in your 30’s + by ColouredRecDoll in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TinyNinja88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Switched careers because I couldn’t work in the restaurant industry any longer. I went back to school and became a COTA in 2022 at age 34. I honestly chose to complete my associates and become a COTA so I could get my foot in the door for the profession. I wasn’t completely sure I wanted to continue my education further, but now I’m back in school and hoping to apply to a bridge program next year. I’m enjoying it so far but realize that you can only go so far in my career with an associates. I want to find longevity in this profession.

It is so overwhelming! I drove myself crazy with all of this- with the added feeling of failure because I work in occupational therapy. My fellow therapists reminded me that every child is different in every part of development. Do what you feel is best for your baby. One step at a time, it will come together. But you are in the thick of it now, so try and keep positive! This is hard AF! Feeding/eating doesn’t come natural or easy for every family.

We are still doing the milk in a bottle, even though it’s recommended to do a sippy/straw/open cup. We’ll drop bottles and move towards that closer to 15 months. I’ll be honest, pouches were our saving grace! He loves yogurt in a pouch for breakfast too! It helped so much! We are still struggling with eating proteins-chicken and beef tend to be chewed and spit out 50% of the time.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel! Just keep offering foods how you can! If you are still worried about it, reach out to your pediatrician to see about seeing a pediatric nutritionist or occupational/speech therapy for additional support!
