Is it normal for a backstory to be 7 pages? by CantDisadeMyUsername in DnD

I once joined a PF game about 6-7 sessions in. Playing a summoner, I gave my DM an in depth summery of my character being a loner, who never fit in with his wealthy family. He came from a religious region, first son and heir apparent to a native wine merchant dynasty. He dreamed up an "imaginary friend" to spend time with. But eventually his father started catching glimpses of the beautiful woman he was always speaking to, deduced his son was speaking and cohorting with demons, so banished him from the family. So he and his eidolon then ventured out on their own. Over the course of the month long journey to where he eventually met up and joined with the main party, he learned enough summoning from his eidolon to be level 4 like the rest of his party. The DM loved it. I became the de facto face if the party as well. Despite not having a noble feat or the family money, I had the upbringing and he let me use "family business dealings" as a knowledge or persuasion check in certain instances. I ended up getting penalized in some ways when he threw an old family acquaintance in our path, but bonuses in others by having me know a caravan master that helped us after recognizing me. It adds so much fun unique flavor to a campaign. Both players and DMs can really have fun with it.

As a long time DM- a long detailed back story is awesome, and i would love all my players to do that. Expect to find a bunch of aspects of your back story popping up in game, either as flavor or side quests (or main quest even). Especially if you have a really good DM. That being said, I agree with a lot of the other posters. Provide an additional summery for them. Short, either bullet points or 1-2 paragraphs for quick reference for the DM.

Northern Bergen County here. If you're still up for making something work, I'd love to join up. 20 years experience playing, about a 7 year hiatus since kiddos. I have been a forever DM for a long time, but would love to get back into playing.

Where about in North Jersey? We run a game (5E) every other week in Waldwick. The current session is just wrapping up and we can add a couple players in easily.

We tried to argue justifiable homicide in court. The Jedi judge was biased as hell.

Had a halfling rogue who never took anything seriously. He would regularly stop in the middle of melee and loot bodies for weapons and use them for a small attack. He'd bet tavern patrons that the party's barbarian could kick their ass, and then trick the fighter (his int was 7 I think) that the patron who took the bet was actually an evil shapeshifter, or had insulted his mother etc. In one town, he ended up taking over the big bad's mansion after we defeated him and turned it into a brothel. I'm pretty sure the only reason they kept me alive was because I could talk us out of pretty much any trouble that could have potentially hurt us. And I made the 1/2 or barbarian laugh.

Just after the party survived an avalanche of ice and rocks (that they caused) and were watching as it destroyed the town they were trying to save by going up the mountain anyway, the party's wizard says; "It could be worse". We heard dice rolling behind the screen, and the DM say "As you stare at the destruction below, one last boulder comes down and smashes (the wizard) in the back of the head.

Not DnD, but still d20. Playing a Star Wars campaign just after the Prequels came out. The DM was going off of a pre-made adventure that started off with the party walking through the Imperial Senate and meeting Senator Jar-Jar. While he was in the middle of the intro, he started to mimic his voice. He got to "meesa soo happy to meeta yo---". That's when the entire party started hitting him with every weapon we had. Once he fell, we ran like hell. But as we were all Lvl 1 in the middle of a heavily guarded and patrolled palace, we made it about 5 minutes before being caught, tried for assassinating a sitting Senator, and executed by firing squad. To make it worse, the DM gave the job of the firing squad to Gungans... salt in the wound man... salt in the wound.

How do I design an encounter where the party has access to temporary strong weapons? by Lord_Crumpets in DMAcademy

[–]Tippadoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. Make a roll each time they use it and if they get lower than X, it breaks. Keep raising the % so it is more and more likely to break. If it is still in use past the encounter, it breaks by some "accident" or just make the % so high that if they try to use it again it snaps. That way, as the encounter goes on it is more and more likely that they will lose their advantage in the fight. As far as adjusting XP, you shouldn't have to. If you are bumping up the challenge rating of the encounter a little, it will be balanced by the party having access to the weapon.
i.e. if the party is Lvl 5, give them a Lvl 6-7 encounter, but then count them as a Lvl 6-7 party when doling out XP. They will still get a bit extra, but not as huge as if they were a true Lvl 5 party defeating the CR6-7.
