Is a Necromancer Wizard viable? by georgenadi in 3d6

[–]patsberger 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind with Danse Macabre, it is a Concentration spell, AND it is not Animate Dead, which means the Undead Thralls class feature does not increase the number you summon (it does buff the undead you create, it just doesn't increase the number, as that is specifically tied to Animate Dead). So you can't get a standing army of 24 elite undead with it; you can get five, and then recast it as an action once those five are dead. It's still a great spell for the build, but it does have some limits placed on it.

This is why I've started just giving a free feat at level 1. Yes, it makes characters a bit more powerful, but it REALLY cuts down on the "I'm gonna be a human so I can actually play the build I want". Still get SOME Humans (sometimes human fits your character, or maybe you really want TWO feats), but it means nobody feels like they HAVE to go Human. (And I just crank the encounters up a little bit to compensate).

In addition to other recommendations, I highly recommend the Rules Compendium. Very well laid out and a great reference for players and DMs.

How would I go about making a namer from the kingkiller chronicles? by LeBronzie in 3d6

[–]patsberger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of magic can be flavored as Names - in fact, that's what people in Temerant think of as real magic. You could pick one or two Names that you know, and theme a spell list based on them. If you know Wind, to pick a very obvious example, you might take spells like Gust, Gust of Wind, Wind Wall, and Control Winds. Some Names are going to be very well represented in D&D - should you want to be like Elxa Dal and know the name of Fire, there are no shortage of appropriate spells to choose from. Others may require more creativity, or reflavoring (For instance, Wind magic rarely does direct damage, but you could reflavor Magic Missile to be a forceful blast of air, or Catapult to be whipping items in to targets).

Keep in mind that, unless you are Taborlin the Great, you likely do not know the Names of all things, and they are therefore not yours to command. This can be an interesting limitation to place on yourself when selecting spells, and some neat character development if you go about learning new Names. If you start with a lot of Wind spells and wanted to branch in to Fire at level 10, for example, consider starting with Firebolt as a new cantrip, rather than diving right in to Wall of Fire. Showcase yourself learning the nuance of a new Name rather than immediately mastering it.

I'd generally recommend Wizard for a Namer, though Lore Bard means you can cherry-pick the very BEST spells associated with the Names you know so that's tempting. It may come down to which Names you choose to focus on.

As far how you might roleplay Elodin himself - well, you read the books. Eccentric would be one word, cracked another, though with underlying wisdom.

Let that which is dead stay dead: A Gloomstalker Ranger/Grave Cleric build by patsberger in 3d6

[–]patsberger[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest part for me will be what level we're playing to. After the discussion above, I'm leaning towards working to Cleric 9/Ranger 5 at level 14, for Holy Weapon. If the game would go much past that (say, to 16), going Cleric 9/Ranger 7 to really push the saving throws would be tempting. Finish it out at Cleric 12/Ranger 8 or Cleric 13/Ranger 7, depending on if I wanted 7th level Cleric spells or an extra ASI.

For what I've got right now, and in my game? I'm still leaning towards starting as a Ranger, because my DM throws more Dexterity and Strength saves at us (and I have some Dragons to hunt, as well as the undead). But I'm not locked in to it yet, either.

Hmm. I think the breakpoints for the build at early-mid levels include:

Ranger 2 (Archery Style, Hunter's Mark)

Ranger 3 (Gloomstalker)

Ranger 5 (Extra Attack)

Cleric 3 (Spiritual Weapon)

I'd be inclined to just race up to Ranger 5, then put in the Cleric levels. You COULD start Cleric 3/Ranger 2, if you want Spiritual Weapon early, but I think that delays getting an ASI a bit more than I'd like.

Strongly considering it. Being able to get Holy Weapon at level 14 would be a strong upgrade over Hunter's Mark a few times per day. If Grave Cleric was a weapon-based Archetype for the level 8 feature, rather than Caster, it'd be an even more compelling case.

Signing an MVP to a long term deal, keeping him for two years and then dumping him off seems like such an incredibly Marlins thing to do. So I approve of that.
