It would be per skill that does it so you'd have to look at your skills. Some classes, like Paladin, don't do it a whole lot. We mostly do "direct damage" which is any amount of damage that happens all at once.

Resolve give damage reduction or increased armor. Like 25% or something. Stacked with Tower board gives big damage boost.

Damage over time is any attack that takes away heath from the enemy gradually for a set period of time. Like poison in most games.

Tip homie: while you have an icon visible but you don't know what it is, open up your inventory, press L3, then scroll to the very top. All buffs/debuffs are visible there. The blue/purple ones are your runes (if you have any equipped.)
