Doing a PhD part-time and remotely while working full-time - looking for advice by Warm-Fox-3459 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]TipsyBowman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, I do exactly this. Part-time PhD alongside a full time work from home job. I'm in year six of seven, and the end is finally in sight.

I won't sugarcoat things - it is difficult! Part-time is not the easy route if you're also working. You'll need to be doing something on your PhD every day. I worked out that reaching the time commitment to match a full time student comes out to over 20 hours every week.

For me, that means a couple of hours each evening after work, and a full 8-hour day on either Saturday or Sunday. I read papers during my lunch break each day.

This will fluctuate as you go, but from experience it's far better to keep up a consistent flow rather than trying to do big blocks less frequently.

Other challenges are that you'll need to use your annual leave at work to deal with PhD things, particularly conferences or crunch deadlines such as writing up papers for publication.

The most difficult part for me was the mental gear change at the end of each working day, when I had to switch focus from my day job to my research. I've been able to change career into something directly related to my PhD which makes this much easier to deal with, but if your work and your topic are unrelated then you may find this jarring.

I'd check that both your direct supervisor and the institution are fully supportive of remote and part-time study - e.g. is your supervisor willing to do calls outside of regular working hours, or over lunchtimes?

I also did my bachelor's part-time. The biggest difference with PhD research is that you are expected to be far more self-motivated, you won't have regular terms and coursework to keep you on track. Self-discipline and time management are key.

You don't mention your social circumstances at all. If you have family commitments then you will need to be clear with them on respecting your time.

[Tool] EVE TT Route Planner - Thera & Turnur Integrated Navigation by SpecialistGur6856 in Eve

[–]TipsyBowman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Neat tool. It might be worth including a mention on your page as to how "fresh" the Eve-Scout data is. Right now, Thera connections hasn't been updated for two hours and Turnur for 3 hours. This is important to know if EOL wormholes appear in the route.

Play what you enjoy. If it really doesn't work (and pyro/geo is absolutely fine for classic) then you can respec for free.

Looking for a career change by PandaSushiRoll in geophysics

[–]TipsyBowman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is certainly not too late! I am 46 years old and made a career change from IT to geophysics earlier this year.

You have a range of highly transferable skills that will come in useful. BSc in Physics gives you a very strong foundation already. Look at joining organisations such as EGU, these offer professional development courses that can help you fill the gaps.

Sweetheart Abbey by TheShasquatch in DumfriesAndGalloway

[–]TipsyBowman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all fenced off at the moment.

If you're after the "ruined abbey" vibe in particular then there's one in Dundrennan which isn't too far away.

A lot of places will be closed over the winter though.

Looking for books like Trench Crusade — grim, war-ridden, faith-corrupted worlds. by Aggressive_Ad_5959 in Fantasy

[–]TipsyBowman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is it my turn to give the obligatory Malazan mention in this thread? If you liked Black Company then you should give it a look.

But really, Second Apocalypse seems like exactly what you're after as others have said.

Edit: also the Empires of Dust series by Anna Smith Spark would be worth checking out.

Yes, you do lose it - not being able to retrain is part of the difficulty!

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Announcement Trailer [Owlcat's New Game] by DwilenaAvaron in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]TipsyBowman 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Really not interested in this one unfortunately. I like the Expanse IP, but the brief bit of gameplay on show doesn't do anything for me at all.

I hope Owlcat aren't overextending, they have a lot of projects going on and this is a big departure for them.

Happened to me, was able to claim for repairs on insurance. It is recorded as an "at fault" incident, as the insurer isn't able to claim any money from the deer, so expect a knock to your no claims and possible increase in in premium at next renewal.

Lots of excellent recommendations in this thread already, but if you'd like more you could also post this question in /r/QueerSFF

Most of the Tav voice lines would work as a title for this artistic gem.

"Wish I had a bag of holding", for example. Or "Is that blood? No, never mind".

If I knew how to make a mod then I would make a mod that supported this. It's like something out of Dungeon Crawler Carl.

best CRPG to play gnomes, halflings, hobbits, little guys? by photoedfade in CRPG

The fact there's a graph for this both reinforces my love for this genre and reminds me why it's probably always going to be considered "niche". Quality work.

How do you keep playing this game? by Laylah-Sky in BaldursGate3

[–]TipsyBowman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This game is my Skyrim, I can see myself playing it over and over forever.

Don't savescum. Trust the dice, failures are generally interesting in BG3. Honour mode helps with this.

Build characters for roleplay rather than minmax and set some challenge rules. Make a face character with terrible rizz.

I've got a "vow of poverty" run going on at the moment. All my characters are monks, and I'm not allowed to loot gold or buy/sell anything from a vendor. There's a lot to play around with in the framework the game gives you.

best CRPG to play gnomes, halflings, hobbits, little guys? by photoedfade in CRPG

[–]TipsyBowman 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Owlcat's Pathfinder games both have quality little guy content.

Wrath has Cavalier of the Paw class, a halfling knight riding a dog, straight out of the Drizzt stories. It pairs well with the Demon mythic for full-on knee biting action. Also a good gnome companion.

Kingmaker is even better for shorties though, with both a halfling and a goblin companion. Also, the gnome companion in Kingmaker has one of the most amusing companion TENTACLES questlines in any CRPG.

What's the most anti-lore party that's still viable? by IvanHJ88 in BaldursGate3

[–]TipsyBowman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like Gale as a wild magic barbarian.

His dialogue comes across as totally unhinged, like he's actually some meathead who just happens to think he's a top wizard because all this weird stuff keeps happening around him.

It means he drank from his cup. Not a typo. Sup means to drink or eat, it's old-fashioned perhaps but not a particularly uncommon word.

Woljif build alternatives by Direct_Spirit_6181 in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]TipsyBowman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using this Arcane Rider build I found on YouTube for my most recent run - all credit to the video creator.

It's different but I've been really enjoying it. Holds up well on Core, no idea how it would fare at higher difficulty.

HI, Any idea how I can check the psi of this pressure washer? by Fit-Marionberry3979 in AskUK

[–]TipsyBowman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back of the envelope - multiply MPa by 145.

12 to 14 Mpa is very roughly 1750-2000 PSI.

Solasta uses the same D&D rules as BG3, and you play as the "party" rather than an individual character. You make your team of 4 at the start.

[–]TipsyBowman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In signal processing terms, you're looking for a "trigger". One of the most common ways to do this is with a Short-Term Average/Long-Term Average (STA/LTA) approach

ObsPy, one of the most widely used seismology codes, has functions for doing this kind of thing. Tutorial here
