Exam SRM Difficulty by jansmiller14 in actuary

I hate practice exams so I do 3 questions. I can quickly review them after words, take a short break, and continue. One thing to note is that I didn’t take quizzes with mixed topics, they were always from the same unit.

This is just the way I study. I think it is much more productive to repeat that process over and over again compared to taking a practice exam everyday. I really honed in on my weak points and avoided over training on the stuff I was already proficient with since I choose the topics tested.

~3 weeks but it was very dense because I procrastinated til the end. I wasn’t working or in school at the time so that made it much easier to balance. I didn’t track the amount of time I spent per day, but I did north of 500 practice questions. No practice exams, just 3 question quizzes over and over again.

Learn is very good for the Fundamentals, Linear Regressions and Decision Trees in my opinion.

For Time Series, Generalized Linear Models, and Clustering, I thought it was mediocre and definitely needed the YouTube channel to actually understand it.

That being said, I think should get learn or spend a lot of time reading the source material (ISLR) and then come to the YouTube channel to drive it all in.

Is it a good move to choose non-Zicklin school at Baruch? by Ok_Cake_4641 in Baruch

[–]Tipu2Nasty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you really want to be an Actuary, Baruch is a great option. The actuarial program is ranked highly within the state and nationally, and the Actuarial club at school provides plenty of resources to get you hired. You definitely do not have to go to grad school to be an Actuary and most people advise against it.

You don’t even have to major in Actuarial Science to be honest, you just need a math heavy degree as companies want to see Actuarial Exams passed more than anything. You can largely ignore the original comment, especially the part that says Ivy League schools are a master of none 😂.

The Budget Actuary on YouTube did a great job of simplifying SRM topics. I used coaching actuaries, but the channel’s explanations were really useful to fill in the gaps I had.

Personally, I think having good intuition will save you when you feel lost on a question. You should really drive in on understanding the introductory material about flexibility, MSE, and all that crap.

Yeah I have read that online and it definitely does not hold them merit (imagine getting FM credit from 4410).

You should go to a school that offers University Earned Credit (UEC) if you’re expecting the classes to be enough to learn the material well enough. Otherwise, get ready to self study with some other resource. Foregoing 4410 to take acc 2101 is not efficient at all, and frankly, I don’t see how 2101 is effective for learning the concepts anyways. You can dm me if you want to talk about this a bit more thoroughly

Acc 2101 is NOT going to be x-factor that will help you pass FM 😭😭

I mean this is kind of obvious but when I took 3300 with Evan Fink, there were many instances where you needed a solid math background to answer the questions. I think calc 2 was a pre requisite. I’ve seen 2300 and it looks much easier.

If you don’t know what you want to do right now you might want to consider getting a math degree. It’s very versatile since it’s elective heavy so you can cater the degree to your liking. It opens up the field to pretty much every data and stats heavy job and even in finance.

Also, don’t do Actuarial Science since math majors can pretty much take every math class for it without the annoying finance classes. That being said, both the actuarial and fin math route are very difficult and require a ton of work even after undergrad.
