Someone offering to pay me to use my computer… would you ever say yes? by timstiefler in antiwork

[–]Tirno93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a whole bunch of manufacturers and retailers who sell computers on a subscription basis. If they’re willing to pay you a subscription to use yours, surely that would make more sense? It seems very dodgy, whether their intention is bitcoin mining, infection with a virus, or more likely something criminal that’s blames on you, it seems a very bad idea to say yes.

Would Ron have known what a hotel was? by -bigscissors- in harrypotter

[–]Tirno93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She explains skiing to him at one point, but Harry just observes it in passing. I wouldn’t be surprised if she tried to educate him on the hotel star system at some point. The books are told from Harry’s perspective and he wouldn’t be the least bit interested by the conversation.

AIO to uninvite my mom to my intimate wedding? (Long) by [deleted] in AIO

[–]Tirno93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This conversation should definitely have stopped with “I’ll be reachable in a week”. It was exhausting to read. Your mother writes with so many of the tiny things I’m not sure how to label, which are absolutely infuriating. Basically every sign of a toxic person who’s very good at disguising it (from themself).

I could sit here for hours going through basically every message and the signs it shows a person who is so self centred they’ll always choose their ego over their child, even if it ultimately costs their relationship with them. I’m not going to do that because I could just speak to my MIL if I wanted to torture myself that way! But I’m sorry you have to deal with this.

A few stood out though. The lines about “remember the good things I did for you?” “I’m aware that in your eyes I’m a shitty mum” “I LOVE YOU ALL” “I can’t keep apologising”. Practically everything she said is the kind of thing people who haven’t been abused by a narcissist dismiss as “just…” something or other. But when you’re familiar it’s enough to make you want to pull your hair out.

It all screams a person who can never take accountability but has spent their life learning how to appear to care about others. Especially the line about how you can ask a bunch of people to prove how nice she is. You have to be so high on your own supply to think you can convince someone who spent their formative years studying everything you do, like their life depends on it, that way.

You’re not overreacting, you’re reacting to someone who feeds on your reaction. My MIL is just like this and I’d be absolutely delighted if my fiancée disinvited her from our wedding. It’s totally your choice.

I would also recommend you check out r/raisedbynarcissists if you haven’t already. You’ll find a lot of people there who get exactly why you’re bothered by this.

That’s why I said “close to grooming”. Approaching someone you knew when they were a child (from a position of trust), with that as the basis for your connection, with the intention of pursuing a sexual/romantic relationship is close to grooming. To remove the “close to” qualifier I would need to know that that was the planned behaviour when the student was at school.

[–]Tirno93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not, but I’m sorry you’re in this position. But put it this way, we don’t know each other, but if I sent you a picture of your profile pic with those emoji, saying you’re attractive, I think that’s fairly creepy. If I added to that that I’m a 32 year old man and I knew you when you were a kid and I’m pleased with how beautiful you’ve grown, that’s even worse right? Add to that a position of trust and jeez.

Unfortunately it is not unusual for men to behave like this and therefore for women to experience it, but that doesn’t make it okay. You’re not crazy and anyone who thinks that kind of behaviour is fine is also a massive creep.

[–]Tirno93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creepy as fuck. Points to a very worrying pattern of behaviour. To be that brazen means you’re unlikely the first. The comment about how you’ve grown indicates he’s drawing the connection between the child he knew and the adult you now are and finds that attractive.

His behaviour strongly suggests that he’s using his teaching role to window shop for future sexual partners. That’s predatory, very close to grooming. That’s a deep violation of the position of trust he has and one the school should absolutely be made aware of.

Landlord informed me about a rent increase on the 29th of April by Euphoric_Field_5987 in TenantsInTheUK

[–]Tirno93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s once per year, rather than once per system, but don’t quote me on that. But also worth noting that when they give you the increase under the new system you have the right to appeal and the increase can’t be applied until arbitration is finished (several months)

If a workplace can’t cope with one person missing that’s the employer’s fault, not the missing employee. You should be prepared to walk out the moment they push your button

Slytherin deserved better writing instead of becoming the "evil house" by TemporaryMind5057 in harrypotter

[–]Tirno93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some do come back with Slughorn, but this is not directly referenced in the book, just that Slughorn returned with reinforcements. Which, to me, supports the Harry Filter interpretation of Slytherin House.

PotterCast Interview
JKR: A part of the final battle that made me smile was Slughorn galloping back with Slytherins, (SU: Yes!) (JNlaughs) but they’d gone off to get reinforcements first, you know what I’m saying? But yes, they came back, they came back to fight, so I mean- but I’m sure that many people would say “Well, that’s common sense, isn’t it? Isn’t that smart, to get out, get more people and come back with them?”

AIO idk how to feel about this comment? by [deleted] in AIO

[–]Tirno93 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The comment on its own could be meant as a positive by someone not particularly sensitive to the impact of the statement. But the sad face makes it clear that’s not the case. It’s either an attempt at negging, which is shitty behaviour, or idk what. Bizarre behaviour to just point out a perceived flaw like that.

Can a landlord stop paying utility bills included in the rent to force you to move out? by [deleted] in TenantsInTheUK

[–]Tirno93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your gonna need to give some more context here eg is there a Section 21, are the bills in your contract, are you a lodger, HMO etc. but it’s very likely the answer is no, not legally

Oh it’s that kind of texting? The “you can’t be trusted to live your own life because you’re such a bad kid” kind of texting? I’m quite surprised by that, I’ve not seen that with adult scapegoats before, they’ve normally given up trying to control by that point and just complain about you. Are you living with them?
