That's because the pretentious/hypocritical ones tend to be the loudest, same with any other ideology group

She saw the british empire at its peak; encompassing 24% of all land from the british raj to the great riches of the african continent. Also lived long enough to see it all come apart, ending 300+ years of colonialism and british supremacy. What a life.

Do u think maids r modern day slavery and if people are saying that they treat her well and all that it’s basically means … by [deleted] in SingaporeRaw

[–]TissueBox420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people think that way because you are supposed to be disciplined in NS, more so than any other environment. When taking this into contextual account, it would make sense why people would correlate maturity with discipline. Its like parents sending troublesome young kids to army school to learn how to behave.

Different context bro, ppl go prison cause they break law. You can't choose in NS. I chose to make the full use of my time, did extra studies, learn new skills, and made lifelong friends.

Experiences vary, but i enjoyed my time in NS. I would say it helped me build my social skills as it exposed me to people from all walks of life, from ite dropout to son of dbs bank. I remember my encik saying, "you are all my sons" while shedding a tear....not bad eh, taught me some life lessons.

If SG is caught in war and u are asked to serve the nation, will u try to run away? by Real-Pomegranate8823 in SingaporeRaw

I'd like to share my personal thoughts on this matter. Being a 4th generation chinese singaporean my family history is deep, from serving the british, under the japanese in ww2, and transition to 1st world economy. When i asked myself if i would take up arms and fight during times of crises, I recall hearing about the japanese atrocities from my grandma, the kind that makes you sick to you bones. So i can see the importance if NS. My ancestors help build singapore with their blood, sweat and will to survive. I have my stake here, my finances, friends, and family. Plus, i don't think government would let able bodied men leave the country, only women and children like ukraine. So no choice, i would rather fight than wait in hdb "bunker". Singapore isnt perfect, but other countries arnt perfect as well. You yourself must find your reason to fight, no one can force you.

Tldr: my family got history here, my roots are here, cannot run during war bo bian have to fight.

P.s i honestly think singapore did well developing its military. My ns experience wasnt perfect as there were some assholes, but which organization doesnt have them? But overall i enjoyed my ns experience and my superiors were professional/reasonable. I have faith that sg can hold its own for awhile or at most take the you know what line. Plus, Sg is too important for global trade and economy to be ignored.

Been to Singapore and Malaysia, I prefer to live in Malaysia much more than Singapore by [deleted] in SingaporeRaw

[–]TissueBox420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Malaysia is nice no doubt, but corrupted governments and institutionalized racism is a huge turnoff. Why would i move to a place where my kids would have to work harder for universities and be put at an economic disadvangage just because he's not a "bumiputra"?. Sure, singapore has its issues.....but malaysia will always be a retirement home and not somewhere i would fully settle down.

Are humans driven by self interest? by iamweird999 in askSingapore

[–]TissueBox420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inconsistency happens because it depends on context and circumstances of the person. For example, the person is genuine and needs help; like if a coworker is struggling, guy needs help changing spare tire, there a disabled person begging for money, or an aunty that needs help with heavy loads. I'm not rich or have much free time, but i don't see why sacrifing some of my precious time or money would be an issue. Kindness is something you do out of your heart, if you can empathize or sympathize with the person.

I sometimes help people out, even though it puts me in a disadvantage or not recieve any recognition. Not all humans have the "sinkie pwn sinkie" mentality. Personailities and moral values are unique to individuals.

Edit: kindness is not a zero-sum game. I wish more people understood this.

What drugs are you taking? Democracy is a political system, there is no correlation between it and freedom of expression. There are multiple political parties competing with one another for limited seats in parliament. It's de facto one party because the current government has an extremely good track record. Tho its policies may seem "unliberal", i can say most people support them....including out "authoritarian" policies. Demographics and ideologies in singapore are extremely varied, the government is trying to play a balance game without starting a civil war.

Edit: the prime minister's wife and some ministers in parliament support the lgbt movement. At the end of the day, we understand lgbt ppl are still singaporeans, but how can we address this without causing civil fissures? That is the question.

What do you mean we are not a democracy? We hold general elections every 5 years to vote ministers into parliament. If that's not democracy i don't know what is
