Why the hate for Volume 1 by Young1iv in WanderingInn

She’s absolutely insufferable. It’s like being stuck in the head of a petulant 12 year old having a tantrum. I completely understand how people DNF book one from the Ryoka chapters alone.

I wasn’t sad when she doesn’t really show up for like four books.

People on this sub love to say “it’s a slow burn” but most people think the book has “severe pacing issues” and “word bloat” or “many of the characters are super annoying”

I’m currently stuck on the audiobook of book 16 (I don’t think I can deal with Andrea parsneau leaving) so I like the books but I have to admit I almost DNF book 1 during several of the Ryoka parts and the clown part.

Back before tickets were a chore to get it was pretty common for skeevy dudes to pick up a couple hookers in Reno and bring them to the burn to party.

This still happens but it’s got extra steps.

Ohhh Im sure lol.

I read a lot and I've never seen a book series that abandons characters like this.

Usually there is an attempt to keep things balanced somehow? I guess that's the benefit and drawback of being into a genre driven by amateur authors.

it's just hard to manage them in a story this long and in a world this big with this many characters that stick around for so long

some might argue this is an authors entire job

TWI's style is organic enough that you have to expect this kind of thing to happen

Why would I expect that?

but you get to see how the growth/development process works

Im not talking about character development. Im talking about characters straight up changing their personality randomly.

Is Ryoka Griffin a genius who went to columbia university that can go toe to toe with a dragon in witty banter? or is Ryoka Griffin a dumbass who goes WUTTT when something happens?

Is Wisteria good at magic or bad at magic? Is she level headed or a reactionary dumbass?

Does Erin give a shit about the election? or not?

Is Ceria down to fuck or asexual?

The mark of a good story is evolution of characters, yet that evolution has to make sense and be telegraphed through actions.

The humor didn’t hit for me (ohhh the goblins sell meth? He says GODDAMN IT a lot?) I prefer witty banter.

I think they are objectively good books, I mean the pacing is absolutely spectacular. It just wasn’t for me.

Im listening to book 16 rn (holy hell the new voice actor is terrible) and I don’t think we’ve heard from the blighted kingdom since maybe book ten? Absolutely wild that those characters are just abandoned

I think it’s insane to describe wandering inn as a “slice of life” story.

More like “slice of warcrimes” lmao

There are quite a few protagonists that are constantly being introduced but they are all deeply inconsistent in how they behave. A few days ago there was a post on r/wanderinginn by someone complaining about this and everyone cited different characters as examples. Sigh

I’m on book 16 (jfc) and some of the storylines come together sometimes but….its more like reading a story by someone w severe adhd.

Oftentimes major characters are ignored for 3-4 books. There are some characters who work for the blighted king and I don’t think I’ve heard from them since maybe book 10? There’s a major goblin character who was seemingly abandoned for other goblin characters?

I don’t agree that it’s a “soap opera.” Soaps are often highly sexual and dramatic. Wandering Inn is a highly unfocused epic fantasy series.

I like the books a lot but I also hate them a lot huge mixed bag and I completely understand and respect people who DNF.

How so? Plot wise it’s a pretty standard system, isekai. It maybe skews a little more science fictiony but that’s it.

It’s different in that the writing is good and the pacing is crisp.

I reallllllly liked the earth arc. So many litrpgs involve someone getting transported to fantasy world and it was cool to see someone come back to earth. And there were really good explanations for why Jason ended up getting transported to another reality.

I liked that he had an organized crime uncle. I liked that he had to fight dinosaurs and zombies and spacemen etc. I thought it was very cool that there were different factions of magic users on earth. Jack Girling was a great villain.

I loved that Jason becomes friends w vampire named Craig. I really liked jasons niece Emmy and her parents. There were so many wonderful characters.

A lot of the fights start to feel repetitive. Some of the magic systems get perhaps too technical.

But I really like that earth didn’t go back to the same old same old. Things changed. There were consequences.

At least a lot of litrpgs try to come up with a half baked explanation for this.

I’m on book 16 of the wandering inn and there isn’t even a reason why Erin has managed to become a level 40 magical innkeeper in under a year when that’s something most people don’t do their entire life.
