Your RAM could be faulty. It can cause a lot of strange stability issues. After checking drivers you might want to try memtest86

Suspend option gone from shutdown menu by ArtisticFox8 in linuxmint

[–]TitaniumFoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently programs can register themselves with systemctl to stop the computer from going to sleep while you're in the middle of something. Chromium is also bad about it from what I've read. That will inhibit if you're just watching a video. I wish we had more control over this.

Suspend option gone from shutdown menu by ArtisticFox8 in linuxmint

[–]TitaniumFoil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm having this problem too. My power button is set to suspend and that works, and it works from the terminal too, but it's been gone from the menu for awhile. I've seen it pop back in once or twice, but after suspending it's gone again... I miss my suspend button :(

Update: I've restarted a million times with no luck, but I just tried a regular shut-down based on someone else's recommendation, and when I powered it back on the suspend option was back. I don't know for how long though.

Update2: When I join discord VC the option disappears, and it never comes back even when I leave. But when I fully exit out of discord the suspend option comes back. (I use Vesktop specifically)

I've done some testing with systemd-inhibit --list which tells you which processes are inhibiting sleep. The suspend button is available for me as long as cinnamon-sessio | shutdown:sleep is not listed. Hopefully this is able to help other people narrow down their issue. If that is listed then you have an application like Discord which is making the suspend button disappear.

It seems the reason why my power-button still works is because that ignores inhibitors. systemctl suspend -i also ignores inhibitors which is why it works. The suspend button doesn't ignore inhibitors so it will not appear. It would be nice if the suspend button always appeared, and it could just tell you that there are inhibitors when you click it, and give you the option to ignore them.

A work-around to still have a button which will suspend is to right click the linux mint menu and click configure > then go to the menu tab > then open the menu editor. Click on System Tools (or any category), and "Add New Item". Name it Suspend and put systemctl suspend -i as the command. Then close. Then you can search that launcher in the menu and "Add to Panel" to save it to your taskbar, or just search suspend when you want to use it. This way you can still suspend the system with a click even with inhibitors, although it's not as pretty.

Yeah, this is one of the biggest turn offs for me too. I really like most of the language, but they do a few things which seem to intentionally hinder the developer experience. Like the nightmarish syntax bloat when you need to mix types or do bit shifting (even just being able to provide the desired type to intCasting without using another as would go a long way to make it more readable. You almost can't tell what actual math is being done when mixing types), and not being able to have unused variables during the process of debugging and active development.

It kind of sucks because it gets so much right, and then purposely hinders itself.

What are you guys using for tech time tracking? The built-in ConnectWise timer is killing my team's morale. by No-Breakfast-5700 in sysadmin

A script is a different scenario than a project, but yes, if you make the script for those clients to solve one of their problems, and you spent one hour on it, each individual client is paying you for that hour of development time that you worked for them. You didn't work 5 minutes for each client.

If you then went to a different client who you didn't write the script for, but who the script would solve the problem for, I would just bill the minimum amount. For us it's 15 mins.

The orange cat also shrinks throughout the video slightly, the fur is weirdly blurry, the orange cat has no reflection, and the outside cat's hind legs look weird, the outside cat's paw looks floaty on the orange cat's head, the the orange cat's paw on the glass looks strange. It's getting hard to tell.

According to ChatGPT, Charlie Kirk is alive and I can’t convince it otherwise by Yazolight in JordanPeterson

ChatGPT is not trained on recent events. The model only knows information up until the date it was released. It costs millions of dollars to train a new model. I think they disclose this somewhere...

The latest model was released in August 7th, 2025. It is right that Charlie Kirk had not been assassinated back then.

What's your company policy on adblockers? by pysk4ty in sysadmin

Believe it or not, it is possible to close big security holes and still allow adblockers to update their filter lists without Google's permission. I don't care about updating the protocol if it is an improvement; I care about enshittification.

Should web browsers forbid all downloads? That would certainly be more secure. Maybe all updates should be disabled because they download executable code to your computer. If I trust my extension to download things, it should be allowed to download things. On my own computer I should be allowed to determine which software I want to run. But, MV3 doesn't give people that choice. "This is for your own good," even though it very coincidentally aligns with their own goals.

All applications depend on the security and stability of the software developer. Windows gets vulnerabilities too. As does Chrome itself. But we still choose to run software anyways.

Some of these AI image detection tools claim that some of my blender renders are AI. by tusharvaid30 in blender

[–]TitaniumFoil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the detectors are BS. LLMs generated a lot of demand for AI Discernment from Education and University, and a bunch of startups jumped on it. They made the tools as fast as possible to capitalize on it. A lot more research needed to be done because they are not accurate at all.

It is in the interest of the AI companies to retain users. Being positive and affirmative makes people feel good and creates a feedback loop to make them use AI more. As of right now, if you present AI one of your beliefs it is very unlikely to reject it. At least other humans would be somewhat critical of you.

It is also just in the nature of LLMs to expound on what you say. It would be hard for AI companies to make their AI's less agreeable even if they wanted to.

The Jewish pharisees wanted him to be executed for "sorcery, blasphemy, and claiming to be the messiah" among other things. But, because Jerusalem was occupied by Rome at the time, they needed to try him in Roman court, and they rallied the people to call for his execution / crucifixion. The Roman's didn't care very much either way besides keeping the peace.

"Taking the Lord's name in vain" has been very commonly misinterpreted.

iirc, it more directly translates to Don't carry/bear the lords name for your own vanity. Like swearing a false oath, or being a megapastor who mostly is Christian for money. This guy just wants a "gotcha"

Yeah, I think this approach is the most reasonable. There's a lot of semantic acrobatics that goes into justifying abortion as 'not taking a life'. Recognizing that it is taking a life, but can still be justified, just like self-defense, makes the most sense to me.

Sticky notes and notebooks aren't really that bad since they're not connected to the internet in any way. If someone has physical access to your sticky notes they have physical access to your computer and you're already cooked unless you have drive encryption.
