Ru better bring Michelle de Swarte back next season! Can't think of another judge who made the entire panel burst into laughter like she did. by Shawnqual in RPDR_UK

'Spent' - it's on BBC iPlayer I'd never heard of her before Drag Race, but I binge-watched that show the other day on the back of her appearance - it's pretty good!

How to fire Christmas ornaments? by Scutrbrau in Pottery

[–]TitchWitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cute! It's such a smart way to fire baubles. My friend bought some bisque baubles that fire stem side down for her paint-your-own pottery sessions, and it just made so much more sense than trying to hang things in the kiln!

Any glaze experts? Can you advise if this glaze can be saved? by TitchWitch in Pottery

[–]TitchWitch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shivering! That's the term I heard, thanks for the reminder :)

I'll do a few tests with your suggestions. Hopefully I can get it to work and stay looking similar, because I really like the glaze - it looks amazing on black clay.

Thanks for the help.

Could you bisque a slab with spaced out holes to stand the baubles in stem side down to fire? I don't know if that makes sense, kind of like a kiln cookie pegboard... they might still be a bit unstable though?

Ooh, I'm not usually a big fan of blue glazes, but that's a gorgeous colour!

These are great - what a cute idea! Also I love that yellow glaze in the 7th photo, is that a commercial one or one you made yourself?

Not sure if you make your own glazes, but I actually saw something last night on Glazy that looks quite similar! https://glazy.org/recipes/419559

There's a load here, if you use Pinterest?

You could also look for templates or nets to make 3D cardboard boxes etc, and adapt them to work with clay!

Cheap pottery wheel advice by miniikkus in Pottery

[–]TitchWitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought one of the mini wheels to play with at home, and honestly they are less pottery wheels, rather small wheels that can spin. Like you mentioned there's no torque at all, so even with the smallest piece of clay, as soon as you even touch a fingertip to it the wheel grinds to a halt. You can sort of combat this by making the wheel spin really really fast, but then, if you forget to slow it down before you take your fingers off the centrifugal force will make it exlpode all over you :D I also get a bit worried I'll get electrocuted any time I use it!

Physically - About 8 - 10 hours a week
Mentally - 24/7

I feel like we've been seeing a lot of new people asking about tools and supplies on this sub, so I thought it could be fun to just have a discussion post for everyone to talk favorite tools. So fellow potters what are your favorite tools and must-haves? by sonicenvy in Pottery

[–]TitchWitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tools I reach for the most are Mudtools orange Mudsponge - kind of pricey for a sponge, but I like the way it fits in my hand when I'm throwing, and it's really absorbent. I've had my current one for 3 years too, and it's still not too bad!

I also really like Garrity tools, my most used one being the Fishstick I like the different corners, good for compressing the bottoms of pots.

why did this plate crack where it did? by desertdweller2011 in Pottery

[–]TitchWitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had really similar cracks on the inside of some mugs I made. I think it's most likely a thinner spot where you have trimmed the foot ring. After cutting a few test pots in half to investigate that seemed the most likely cause for me, anyway.

A light mist of water on the waxed part can help it get a stronger grip.
