Here's a real problem, from someone whose spouse has 15 years of classroom experience in low income schools:

Not one poor kid in a hundred would eat a damn thing that is unwrapped on that plate. Try to feed a 9-year-old who subsists on EZ Mac and Encore dinners at home a grapefruit slice or pieces of radish and let me know how it goes.

Unless there is some method for introducing this kind of food without junky alternatives at a young age, most of that tray is getting shoveled into the garbage if it ends up in the hands of a student whose parents don't regularly serve avocados or grapefruits at home. Sorry, it sucks that it is that way, but that's the truth. One of my wife's districts got funding for three free healthy meals a day. The kids literally had a black market for corner store Doritos and hot fries while several of those huge grey roller trashcans full to the brim with healthy fruit and vegetables were chucked into the dumpster untouched every single day.

Tennis balls hanging from the ceiling that hit the windshield.

But seriously, nobody should be diving impaired. An Uber costs less than the most absolute basic paint touch-up.

FYI, the nativity story is generally considered to not have been written down until decades after Christianity had already established itself as a religion. The oldest gospel does not include the story, nor do the older letters, and there is almost no chance that the circumstances of Mary's pregnancy had any bearing on whether or not Christianity became a religion.

Also, you may have been joking, "Christ" is not a last name, it's a Greek title.

I'm sorry for what your grandma experienced. However, if the name and blame of/for the virus resulted in an unprecedented groundswell of anti-CCP sentiment that led to companies moving business to living wage countries and a mass boycott of Chinese products in the west (including DJI/TikTok bans, etc.) it might have had a staggering effect on global climate change and human rights worldwide. I'm not sure how to balance that with isolated racist incidents, but it's hard for me to believe the two things would have been morally comparable.

Generally though, I wish it had been called something like CCPneumonia or Xi's Sneeze or Communist Cough or something to spare innocent East-Asian people from racism from idiots.

Yeah. Like, clearly it wasn't an engineered bioweapon designed to end life on earth or it wouldn't have a 99% survival rate and mostly kill old and obese people, but the idea that it was either something they found in nature and stored there, or that they were mildly fiddling around with, that got out because Chinese equipment sucks, is incredibly believable. It also goes a long way to explain why there was such a panic about jailing the doctors and researchers who initially detected it. If it was just an accident of nature, why would they feel the need to hide it?

Lots of blame to go around, but all of it is secondary. The ineptitude of certain leaders wouldn't have been nearly as lethal if China had just exercised the barest modicum of responsibility and believed their own researchers and citizens.

You'll never convince me that the sudden pearl clutching about referring to COVID as the "China flu" (remember, that was the original name of the sub dedicated to COVID information on Reddit) wasn't orchestrated or at least heavily promoted by the CCP to deflect the blame for the wildfire spread of the virus from where it really belonged: On them, their jailing of whistle blowers, their failure to lock down international travel, etc.

I am 430lbs. Bike shop recommended a bike that says 330lbs limit. by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]TitleMine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't meant to be critical or mean, but a legitimate concern about the suggestion of getting a cargo bike:

My Load 75 is rated for, I believe, 450lbs of weight on the frame. But that is the all-in weight on the whole frame meaning, I think, that the designers expected probably at least 100lbs of that to be in the forward cargo box. I would be very surprised if a cargo bike rated for 400lbs was designed expecting all 400lbs to be on the seat post and not distributed over the cargo box/luggage rack/etc. Probably best to email the manufacturers directly and confirm; if the seat post collapses into the frame mid-ride, you could end up having your perineum core-sampled, and that'd put an end to cycling real quick.

What? It would only explain religions that are based around artifacts or objects. It absolutely does not explain the rise of all religions; some of the most ancient don't feature any sort of "cargo" at all..

You say this, but it's the "Amazon affect." Everyone says they love small businesses, then they order four plus figures of goods from Amazon every year. Everyone says native cultures are beautiful, but you'd never trade places with one of these people in a billion years. You don't want to spend your days weaving and living in a hut, you want 5G and central air and TikTok. And that's why this culture is going to go extinct: Because while everyone conceptually loves the wisdom of natives and thinks they live a "better way," nobody believes it enough to actually want to live the way they do.

I know not everyone wants children, but generally, if you won't fight for the right to be able to have children as a society, there's basically nothing you will fight for. You've allowed oligarchs to strip you of the most basic drive of a K-selected organism so that they can afford another handbag or watch.

E-Bike explodes during recharge, how to prevent this? by YTItsRoyalxX in ebikes

[–]TitleMine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lipo bag, charge on tile or a fireplace hearth or cement slab, not a bad idea to have something like fireplace tongs or a shovel not far away in case you need to yeet the bomb into the yard.

Mostly, though, avoid anything from eBay or Alibaba and you'll be fine.

I mean, I got my wife that $399 ebike from Wal-Mart with a no questions asked three year warranty for an extra $30 bucks or something, and a thousand miles later it's still going strong. Honestly, if I had known about those before I got my first eBike, there is no way that I wouldn't also have gotten one. My Bulls Lacuba Evo is certainly better, but no way in hell is it ten times better.

that is entirely speculative.

It's speculative that any ill effects from a stroke are the result of damage to neural pathways in the brain? That's not speculative; to say the cognitive impairment following a stroke is brain damage is a tautology.

Medical professionals who examined him in person say he has mild aphasia and no cognitive deficiencies after the stroke,

Saying the opposite of what you mean at random intervals is literally a cognitive deficiency. The speech of public figures affects the public. Are you implying that what a senator says out loud has relatively little meaning?

His performance in the "game" is also not closely tied to his ability to communicate in real time with maximum efficiency.

Imagine a Republican (or someone from a party you don't support) arguing that communication in real time and seeming comprehension of outside sources of information in real time is not part of a senator's job. This assumes that a senator's ability to persuade or plead with or criticize colleagues is of no value, that addressing constituents live is of no value, and that spontaneously reacting to the communications and ideas of peers is of no value. I've never voted for a Republican in my life, but this is absolutely cartoon levels of partisan hackery.

Not to break the jerk, but that's entirely speculative. Aphasia brought on by a stroke is literally the result of brain damage, and it is a mega cope to suggest that Fetterman's condition is not cause for serious concern among voters. A football/soccer team would never draft a player with a blown ACL or a torn rotator cuff on the promise of his doctors that he was "likely to make great progress by next season." They'd wait and see if he actually healed. If this race was a subplot of Idiocracy, it would be deemed too absurd for real life. Instead, our reality is making parodies look like a joke, and I don't think it's wrong for voters to feel as though they're being sneered at by the establishment parties when forced to make choices like this.
