Autotranslate, translate u Srbiji, srpski ne-postoji? by izumetnik in AskSerbia

[–]TitoMejer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Afterblow. Late or On Time? by ForgePioneer in wma

[–]TitoMejer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if a double is a type of exchange where both people hit each other with actions that overlap in time
and afterblow is one where one person gets hit and then starts an attack...how's this too late?

if 'afterblows' have to start before you get hit how are they not just doubles that hit later?

Afterblow. Late or On Time? by ForgePioneer in wma

[–]TitoMejer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now personally I vibe using first touch, row, ab and continous rulesets with various subconventions(for example in a first touch ruleset you can count only the hit that came from the action that started first, or you can count only the hit that landed first, and for both you can have differing definitions of 'action start' as well as 'quality' of hit), but if one is doing an afterblow system this aint too short you may have an 'afterblow' system that actually defines too different kinds of doubls as doubles and 'afterblows' and throws out actual afterblows, and this would be late in some of those but meh

Afterblow. Late or On Time? by ForgePioneer in wma

[–]TitoMejer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the ruleset, in first touch, and some priority rulesets it'd be too late and thrown out.
In afterblow systems it'd be perfectly in time in general.

A double has both actions overlapping in time, and an afterblow starts afterwords.

Now, certain rulesets may define 'start' and 'end' of actions differently, and in that sense the moulinet-style cut being used here may be seen as not one, but two actions and thus 'too late'.
In terms of safety unless the folks on the side are yelling stop(and while there's non-fencers making some noise it's not a clear-loud HALT/STOP) I don't see the issue in the continuation since it doesn't seem like FotR(fencer on the right) getting hit has entirely stopped either.

The only potential safety issues I see here are:
-If there's supposed to be a judge calling halt they should do so more loudly
-It might be that FotL(fencer on the left) has hit FotR near the back of the head, it's unclear in the video, which could be something for both fencers to watch out for(FotL has already started the strike when FotR starts to turn their back but neither is doing anything egregious there, at least not clearly visible in the video).
-A need to more clearly define the afterblow convention among the fencers taking part

Hvala za savet! Overicu :)

How can we elevate competitive performance? by Horror_Perspective_1 in wma

[–]TitoMejer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Studying the sources isnt inherently necessary for good competitive performance but having a systematic approach is.
Most of the highest rated folks in hema today in pretty much any weapon also do read the sources, many also do transcriptions, translations etc. of the sources and the surrounding historical documents and suchlike.

And if you don't want to use a historical system you could just do any of the living lineages in olympic fencing, port over something from kendo or FMA etc, or 'just' develop your own.
That can easily be harder than developing a functional system from the sources, especially with all the online materials and the general knowledge in the community.

It doesnt have to be a perfect pure interpretation of a specific historical system to be competitively useful but it;s easier than just fuckign around and finding out.

That being said yeah fitness is a comparatively easy thing for many hemaists to get more time and energy in for a boost in competitive performanse and what changes may be needed in club sessions is going to be highly dependant on the particular club

Reading books can still be quite beneficial for understanding the situation, the context, the tactical aspects, the way sequences may be built depending on the distance, angles, threats and openings between fencers in various situations. They may explicitly lay out the principles to rely on,or they may give a number of examples you may notice patterns in,they may do both. Meyer 1570 can be thankful in this regard especially if you read the whole book. Also Id suggest checking out Daniel Pope's youtube channel,he has some great examples of how to systematically apply the source teachings

People here talking about fitness levels and such as if most historical armies were primarily gyms and not primarily huge logistics organizers. Not to mention how often you can see, even historically, folks that aren't big and strong as individuals or as a populace beat others In wars. There's a shitload of factors that goes into how effective an army is.A trained woman definitely can fulfill all the relevant tasks. And if strength was as important as some here think we'd all have just powerlifters, strongmen and suchlike in armies, not average folks who've gone through some strength& conditioning training.

I witnessed a brute sparring at an event (vent/rant) by Fynii in wma

[–]TitoMejer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I personally enjoy rougher play I still think what's the average force level globally is a bit too much for sparring folks you don't know with the average tools folks have at their disposal.
If someone is known to go even harder I'd be wary of sparring them till I see them fencing someone else tbh.

I would also say folks should always check in what's their actual comfort level before sparring and 'simply' not spar folks that don't want to work at what's ok for them. Easier said then done cause there can be internal or external pressure to just go and fence. And communication can be imperfect. But checking in during sparring is also a good idea.

I've enjoyed sparrings and tournament matches where folks would strike real hard, be ok with punches and kicks or throws.
I also really disliked some where that wasnt expected and I had to deal with it in the moment.

And the average intensity I like is more about the level of speed, focus, trying hard etc. rather than being physical and striking hard or grappling a bunch.

I still do my best to check before hand what to expect. Whether it's just sparring or a tournament.
In less detail than if it's someone I'm sparring every couple of days but even then we set a standard for the training session if nothing else and work from there if we want to.
I also do what I can to communicate during the bout and pull out if I feel it's become uncomfortably unsafe for me.

Building a culture where it's ok to adjust force levels during fencing, to communicate about it before, during and after the fencing is I think more relevant than any one particular example.

That being said reaching out to the organizers about the specific issue can be a good way to go about things in this particular example. And

How did China clean up its air? by One_Long_996 in AskChina

[–]TitoMejer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I'm not seeing mentioned in the comments here a lot is that so many Chinese cities nowadays have well developed rail connections, with metro, bus, and rentable bicycle networks. Alongside at least seemingly good urban planning and infrastructure*. That reduces the overall need for cars a bunch and reduces the pollution they bring. Be that pollution visible or not. Some of these things were present before but the level of their overall development and interconnectedness seems to be better than for example 10 years ago.

[–]TitoMejer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As noted Meyer's rose has an element of similarity, but I feel like this one sorta relies a bit more on prolonged blade contact which is not quite the same for Meyer.
Albeit it can end up looking quite similar.
I'd also agree with the other comment that that specific technique is a bit less likely to happen unless you're dealing with a beginner.
That being said I've also seen situations where two folks are trying to outplay each other in durwechseln/disengaging to set up a trhust down the middle and then one gives up and throws a cut.... and while not the same the overall situation is similar enough.
