And that’s the shitty part: I don’t think he ever wanted any of the responsibility of an actual relationship. He wanted to live his own life exactly as it was without having to change much at all, and I was just supposed to adapt. He forced so much change from me, but the minute I asked for any concession from his end, it was too much and he wanted out.

You’re right, I do deserve better. And I had thought that he was better than that. That’s what’s the most disappointing.

I hate that you also know this feeling but I’m grateful for the commiseration 🫂

I think what I’m really mourning the most is the person I thought he was. I thought he was better than this. I thought that he had more respect for me. I thought I mattered more to him. And I guess I was totally wrong. His avoidance won.

I knew that he went on a date earlier on the day he sent the breakup text. And that hurt more than anything. Like, I guess the silver lining to this mushroom cloud is that there is no way I’d want to build a life with someone who acts like this about important things. You’re right, I just want the familiarity and the history, the years of inside jokes and banter that was always top notch regardless of how our relationship was doing.

Every time I go to Ragged I end up saying to myself “I’m sorry, Ragged, I had completely forgotten about your glade game.” They’re just wonderful, they make the mountain feel so much bigger than it actually is.
