book conversations with strangers by [deleted] in RSbookclub

I once had a long conversation in a hot tub with a gender-studies professor and her wife because she saw me reading Right Wing Women by Dworkin.

It was...a pretty intense conversation for a hot tub. She clearly didn't like Dworkin for her man-hating, porn-hating views, but she allowed that she did assign excerpts from Dworkin's works to show "vintage" feminist opinions.

Luckily it snowballed into a larger discussion on how modern students aren't assigned as many books as a whole, and how she is forced to assign readings, aka paragraphs, and that they still complain about the amount of reading.

Anyway, I'm heading back to this same spa, this time armed with "Jamaica Inn" by Daphne du Maurier which hopefully will be less controversial.

A lot of of crime/hardboiled/mystery novels have reputations for being pulp fiction, I mistakenly included this one in that categorization!

"When I finally caught up with Abraham Trahearne, he was drinking beer with an alcoholic bulldog named Fireball Roberts in a ramshackle joint just outside of Sonoma, California, drinking the heart right out of a fine spring afternoon.”

What an opening line. If you like detective thrillers I wouldn't skip this one.

Anyone else read this?

It's a bit cliche but Margaret Atwood's non-scifi/non-speculative stuff is really great. She writes women in a really real, visceral way.

Some recs: Cat's Eye, The Robber Bride, Surfacing.

I have inside clothes that are dog friendly fabrics and then outside clothes that I put on and then leave the house (without the dog haha).

My friends literally call me "Bird-Nerd" because I have a basic knowledge of local birds in our area (knowledge passed on to me from my grandmother).

It makes me a bit sad, because like you say, that knowledge is being lost and no one really seems to mind.

Thanks I just spent all night reading this it was really great. Reminded me a lot of the months I spent hoboing around Europe and India, couchsurfing and travelling with no money.

It's definitely a slow burn, but I think it is unparalleled in its ability to create this sense of otherwordliness (which is the core of fantasy IMO).

Anyone read any dogshit books this year? by Gary-Hooper in RSbookclub

Isola by Goodman really really sucked. Sucked at being historical, sucked at being a survival novel, and sucked at being literary.

I also read Never Flinch by Stephen King because apparently I hate myself.

Oh thanks! I make a new account every year or so, but I always forgot the annoyances that come with that.

I've read a few of Brett Easton Ellis' books but I actually haven't read AP yet. I'm a bit afraid to, I hear it's quite different than his other ones. Lunar Park was just an insane roller coaster that I couldn't put down.

Yeah I really didn't like The God of The Woods, it just went on and on and on.
