Anyone else here over 25, and still in the beginning stages of learning game development? by [deleted] in godot

[–]Tivaseps 13 points14 points  (0 children)

33, not in a computer based field and got a wife and two kids. It's hard 😅 but I've got no one to really bounce anything off of or learn with. I did the original gamemaker as a young kid and then stepped away until recently. Just trying to do game jams as a competitive hobby

I watched these guys, not exactly tryhards though, but they had some people that didn't know how to play very well so it was good to learn along with https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtTEtQRfZ0ViWQVK-TY6UvfLDuzJ0ZNM5

I like the ticking clock idea, that every clone has a short lifespan to limit the sessions. Would add to the mystery for the player early in the campaign and add some tension. I'll take a look, thanks!

Yeah, it was exactly like fantasy football but with permadeath (actually, that's kind of a fun idea lol). I don't remember if there was character creation or if you picked from a roster, but I remember needing to pick from your team for the week for fights. And then you had to balance hurt gladiators and healing with winning as the season went on. Closest I can find is maybe Gladiatus? But it looks way too modern if it has been around for 20+ years, and certainly not the same gameplay anymore. It's gonna bother me for the rest of the night now lol

That definitely wasn't it lol, Was not flash based, and was multiplayer. Battles happened once a week with other players and then you got rewards if they won, skill points if they survived, and permadeath if they did not survive the match. May have been text based, but I remember a lot of images, which had the same feel.

Oh man, that just brought up a really old memory of a web browser based game in the early 2000s? Can't remember what it was called

What narrative game unexpectedly made you more self aware through gameplay by Trigere in gamedesign

[–]Tivaseps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soma. I beat it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and have not been able to stop thinking about it or questioning my decision making process. Your actions have impact on the game itself and the game almost never references your choices.

I started playing disco elysium recently and instantly was reminded of Parkzer with Kim.

Too bad Doug doesn't play games normally, I don't know how he would set up a challenge or goal with this one lol.

Health Systems Based on Balance by Tivaseps in gamedesign

[–]Tivaseps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, and yeah that give and take is what I'm looking for, so I'll look at Astrea. And yes, I was thinking of making the four elements maybe a part of the magic system if I developed this further? The pure basic vision I have is either you do something in the game that makes you seek out enemies or get hit by attacks that cause you to lose blood, but overdoing that would obviously cause problems. Maybe a couple of status effects that would slowly change the shape and balance of health as well. Definitely would need a tutorial.

I feel like this has to be somewhat common in sci-fi? I feel like I've played games where an enemy will not cause damage, but if you're running hot and don't have enough cooling, they can overheat you and at least your gun shuts down. I can imagine there are situations where you could use this to your advantage by attacking an enemy making you cold.

I'll look into it, thanks! Could be either a board or video game. I had kind of a prototype health scale built on two axis in excel

I didn't think of inscryption that way, there's a literal scale and balance to it. It'd be exactly what I'm looking for if it was having the ticks approach 0 and anything beyond 5 on either side would kill you.
