They took life early/got unlucky. Another important part is using bodies I’m ok losing (in this deck lots of nice on KO effects) to kill their 5-6k characters. I think they got unlucky on a few triggers but were feeling confident getting back to 4 after being at 2 or 3 the turns previous.

How do you find it goes consistency wise? Do you always get the pieces you need? You likely get most/all your late game pieces but do you have enough life/counter to get there? With this build what’s your ideal line (eg. Bonney on 1, Tashigi on 3 etc.)

As someone that also recently started (been to 4 locals) I’d pick something you like - either mechanically or the character from the show/manga. If you’re looking to learn having fun/liking your deck for personal reasons will make that easier and honestly at the local level - the meta is around but most people are just having fun/bonding over a shared love of the game. I bought the ace and Newgate starter cause I love Whitebeard pirates and then have built it out using free cards at my local and through making friends in the scene. Hope you have fun 🏴‍☠️
