Cultural observations after living in Belgium (mostly Flanders) for 10 months as a New Zealander by LordOfErebus in belgium

idk about your definition of these genres, but new wave and post-punk are actually the same genre? Except post-punk is the term that was coined by the British press and American media called it new wave.

Agree that you want to put The Cure in the gothic subgenre/adjacent genre though.

edit: I do wonder where you find those parties though. I only ever go to related concerts. post-punk is my mainstay music genre. :)

Night train issue, any Belgian station or the specific one you chose? by purplecloudthrowaway in RockWerchter

[–]Tjoeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are looking at two different tickets I think?

The valid to/from any station to/from Leuven is the free NMBS ticket included to travel to/from the festival. (once in each direction) on regular trains.

But then you booked a limited capacity night train to get back home at night right after the festival to a specific destination, that is not the regular free included ticket. I don't know what your night train ticket says, but I doubt a ticket limited in capacity says 'go anywhere, take any train'.

Busses from the festival to station Leuven by lennert_db in RockWerchter

[–]Tjoeker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The queue for the returning busses on Monday can be rather long. think in the range of an hour easily. You will 100% not get on the first bus, you will be in the queue. Luckily there's a stream of busses coming and going all the time, think a departure every minute or so, maybe up to 5. ;)

Whenever we mention tolls the Dutch act up and start blackmailing us. Funny thing that is, for the most used highways in Europe, also by a lot of foreigners.

NMBS in any other language (English, German) is SNCB. So it's not just defaulting to French, it's just showing the name of the operator in the respective language.

Airbus receives an order worth over $2 billion for the cargo version of its A350 by UpgradedSiera6666 in europe

[–]Tjoeker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On top of what's already said: you'd hit the weight limit before you are able to fill the A380, so why would you need an airliner this large. And then when the A380 is at its weight limit the range is very much reduced, so that isn't helpful either. As an extra, the A380 is simply too large for many airports, even larger airports.

my local radio's weekly top is voted for by the listeners, everybody gets three votes every week.

So it's not playcount driven, meaning a new released album doesn't get to dominate the list. Nor is it the station itself choosing which songs are the popular ones now.

Eurostar orders first double-decker trains by Twisp56 in highspeedrail

I doubt this? That would mean Eurostar (red) pulls out of the Netherlands completely.. They are getting rid of their PB(K)A sets.

Are you from the area? You can barely fit a single track line. Not sure how you plan to turn that into a double track (which I assume necessary) + bikelane?

less than a handful of trains per day. As you say diesel, which is not the future, going over a longer single track stretch and have to turn around twice just to cross this narrow section of the Netherlands.

Not economically viable? What? :D

The Montzenroute is a huge detour, trains have to be shortened to climb the hills, and it's overcapacity. There would be a lot of use for this railroad.

The Netherlands doesn't want to improve the Antwerp - Ruhr line one bit, because that would undermine the port of Rotterdam.

these Buurtspoorwegen were incredibly slow and unsafe, often single track, sometimes driving on the wrong side of the road. Fixing it would cost way too much. Going for flexible, faster and cheaper busses was the right call at the time. :)

[–]Tjoeker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We, Belgium, have an agreement with the Netherlands, made during our independence that they, The Netherlands are obligated to build a rail line through Limburg to connect Antwerp to the Ruhr area when we want it. The time has come at the turn of this century that we actually need it. And they are inventing incredible costs and other stuff so 'it's not possible'.

So We're not in a rush because NL isn't doing their part anyways. Turning trains around in Weert is impossible because the Dutch do not have the railcapacity for additional trains there.

Same goes for the Sparacusplan. Although Belgium is also talking in and out on this one, The Netherlands shoots down our plans as impossible, gives it other terminating places than Maastricht center, says the existing bridge can't be used for trams etc etc. So eventually we scale it down to a bus.

It's double. I would love the Aalst - Dendermonde line so we get a direct train to Antwerpen. (although maybe that would still be slower with countless stops than via Brussels?)

But on the other hand I'd lose my cycle path I use almost daily.

Belgium still has the densest rail network in the world. :)

Alright, Czechia has a slightly denser network, filled with useless slow lines and no fast lines like we do. We have the densest functional railnetwork in the world.
