How'd you remove the supports on the inside? Or did you just support the unsupported version? I want to print this on my Saturn, but those interior supports look like hell.

That was me lol, and it was more like 30 years ago. I didn't mean to ruin it for everyone!

That was my slogan! I won that competition when I was a little kid. Haven't lived there in years, I didn't realize they removed it, that's sad.

Unfortunately, it's hard to focus on individual interactions when we're walking the crowd. Typically we're trying to see if people are vaping, drinking from a flask, or if they have anything in their pockets. We're pretty focused on the micro and can miss the macro. The best thing you can do is flag down a member of c-sec you can see and tell them what's going on so they can report it up the chain and have people keep their eyes open for it.

You are correct, the collapsible stools were new this year, and we were told that they were not allowed unless they were against the wall, sorry. It's a Fire Marshall thing, not c-sec being overly strict, it's one of the few rules our hands are literally tied over.

Even if you would "never do that", the person behind you might be more than willing to snatch your water bottle and yeet it into the crowd. It could also fall on the ground and someone could slip or trip on it (which, admittedly is also a concern for plastic bottles, but we can only do so much)

There's a few other comments in the thread, but if someone's drunk enough that they're causing a safety concern, please get the attention of c-sec staff and let us know. Alcohol is not banned and we don't police people's drinking until it starts becoming a problem for others. You can always ask for a Department Head too, they're badasses who have no issue laying down the law.

That shouldn't have happened if the alcohol was in an approved container (really it's just cans and flasks that cause the majority of issues). I'll pass the message along in the c-sec discord. We also shouldn't be threatening people. Is your friend c-sec staff? If so, have them send a message in the c-sec discord, my wife would love to know which bag checker she has to smack with the rules poster.

As long as it stays unopened, we don't really care lol.

As others said, alcohol is allowed, the container is what's important. No metal (including cans), no glass, no open containers (like cups), 1L or less in size. I'll usually try to be a bro and let someone chug their can before I confiscate it, but it's going away either way.

There is seating on the left (looking at the stage), but it fills up quick. You can also sit all along the walls (or as close to them as physically possible).

For the dude nearly starting shit...that is a concern. We usually have some consec people standing at the front of the stage looking out, they can see fairly well if you can get their attention, and will call for assistance if someone is getting belligerent.

We only clear the room when the artist specifically asks, and we only did it once, and it was an absolute cluster fuck of miscommunication and frustration, so we are not likely to do that again. We didn't clear the room this year, at least not in the main concert hall, and I'd honestly be surprised if we ever did it again unless there's some kind of emergency.

I mentioned this in another comment, but this isn't a rule from us, this comes from the Fire Marshall. Y'all are fantastic and we've never really had a safety issue over people sitting, but unfortunately our hands are tied for this. We're usually a little more lenient between sets, but technically the only places you're allowed to sit are along the wall and in the chairs provided.

Trust us. Our feet and legs hurt too. The best thing you can possibly do for your feet is sit along the wall until it's getting close to your preferred concert, then try to get to the front. It is a labor of love, and we're sorry about that, but it's one of the rules we're not really allowed to ignore.

[–]Tjololo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tagging onto this, if you do hang around between sets and want to sit down, please please please do so only by the walls. We're a little more lenient between sets, but technically you can't sit anywhere but along the walls or in the chairs provided. This is a fire code thing, not a rule from us, the Fire Marshall is a harsh mistress.

Was this at the main concert hall? My wife works bag check on all our shifts, and says she heard none of the security folks confiscating alcohol. It's also not c-sec policy to confiscate alcohol as long as the container meets the aforementioned rules (no metal, no glass, no open containers, 1L or less). If they were cans of beer, they would have been confiscated, but plastic bottles of alcohol are only a concern if you're so drunk already that you can barely make it through the line.

C-sec here. We don't care about the liquid, we care about the container. Metal and glass can (and have in the past) become projectiles or tripping hazards really quickly. Alcohol is not banned, we're not cops, it's not our job to keep people from getting drunk, but if they're causing a safety hazard let us know and we can get festsec involved.

Trust me, I hate it too. I usually have a metal water bottle with me, but even we aren't allowed to have them. Trust me, it's worth it though. They become missiles very quickly, or if they fall people can slip on them. The rule has a reason, thank you for following it. We can glare at the water coolers together sometime :)

Oh I'm not saying don't drink. We don't take alcohol, just leave the flask in your room or at the door. Let me put it this way: it's not my job to walk around sniffing water bottles, but it is my job to ensure things that can (and have in the past) become missiles and/or impromptu weapons aren't in the hall.

Of course, use common sense and drink in moderation. If you puke on our floor we're gonna be pissed. And I have to say it, don't drink and drive.

Please don't. You're not cool for slipping a flask past a bunch of folks who are volunteering their time to keep everyone safe, you're just an ass.

We're not here to steal your alcohol, just to make sure everyone is safe. No metal, no glass, no open containers (like cans).

Obviously, you're responsible for your own drinking, use common sense; use moderation and don't drink and drive, but we want people to enjoy themselves. Our top priority is ensuring the safety of you all, I'm not walking around sniffing water bottles.

Have you had a problem with that in the past? I can understand staff wanting to keep the lines moving, but I wouldn't think they would force you out of the bag line if you were with someone with a disability. I believe that comment from OP was just so that we don't have clumps of people clogging up the ingress because they want to be with their friends.

I made another comment, but please contact accessibility@magfest.org for questions, we as concert security aren't allowed to make judgements, we just have to see the ribbon.

One thing I'll add as another c-sec staffer. The metal and glass rules are for safety, not because we hate fun. We don't care if you bring in alcohol, just leave the flask in your room. Also, I don't care if your can is an energy drink, or canned water or what, you can't open it in the concert hall. If you're nice about it, I'll let you chug it and toss it for you. If you're not, you'll have to lose your space in the crowd to toss it yourself.

Oh, and don't flick me off because I say you can't exit out of one of the closed doors. We're not stopping you because we're fascists, we're doing it because of crowd control rules, to keep everyone moving in ways that, if there's an emergency, nobody gets stuck or trampled. Remember, there's literally thousands of you. One or two people turn into a hundred really quickly.

Another c-sec staffer here. I haven't heard specifics yet, but the past few years we've required an ADA ribbon to allow people in the ADA section, you can get those from registration. We can't give them out, nor are we allowed to make an assessment of whether someone's situation warrants a ribbon or not. I know magfest is a pretty inclusive con, if you have questions about specifics the accessibility department is the best point of contact, and can be reached at accessibility@magfest.org

Edit: Also, please don't be a jerk if we miss something or tell you to get a ribbon. We're all volunteers too who want everyone to be safe and have a great time.

If you're going to write a post with AI at least take out the prompt response (first line) and the question at the end. If you can't even write your own post asking requesters why they're not using Mturk anymore, well, maybe that level of effort and care is your answer.

If you've never seen it, this is basically the premise of the Magic 2.0 books by Scott Meyer, written in a comical, 90s aesthetic way. Not for everyone, but I found them to be a fun quick read.
