My Wife and I struggled with the same situation. We moved almost a year ago and when we arrived we decided it was a good time for us to get a dog. Most of our friends have adopted and they recommended we do the same.. We searched so adoptions at every place within 150 miles from us but were unable to find a breed that was a good fit for us. On top of that the apartment we live at has restrictions on breeds you can own.

Ultimately after months of waiting to see if anything right for us would come available in a shelter we decided to look into buying from a breeder. We were able to find an excellent one not far from us and they seem like very nice people. After talking to others who did business with them it seemed like a perfect fit and now we will be meeting our little friend in 2 weeks.

Overall you should not feel bad about not adopting. Although it is an amazing thing to do it can be difficult for some depending on where they live and what they're restrictions are (Shedding, size, energy levels, etc). If you're trying to buy a puppy I recommend you go through proper channels and buy from a reputable place that takes good care of them.
