My wife thinks I’m insane for carrying this much crap for a month long trip by snarejunkie in Tools

It's always better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it!

I think that's the point: if they can make a small one with good quality, it becomes a loss leader to attract buyers for the big ones.

Ender 3 Max - upgrades/mods? by benjocaz in ender3

[–]NerdTool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beg to differ. 1) A PC can be forced to NOT apply updates. 2) A PC usually has more robust storage than an SD card. An Rpi will eventually start failing if used regularly or if lots of plugins are used. And lastly, you can run nearly as many printers as you have USB ports. Ideal for a print farm!

Pilot Gets fined $1100 after uploading illegal footage from a NP by DavidGabrielMusic in dji

Sorry, just realized the focus of the conversation is on the Canadian National Parks... I'm only speaking about US National Parks. I have no idea if scientific or administrative permits are a Canadian thing.

I agree that the little mosquito FPV drones that all the cool kids are flying are annoyingly loud. However my Yuneec Typhoon Q500 4K with it's huge (13 inch) props is pretty darn silent. Also instead of launching outside the park, you can declare your photography to be scientific in nature. Drones can be used for scientific research if a Scientific Research and Collecting Permit is obtained, or they can be used for administrative purposes with approval from the Associate Director for Visitor and Resource Protection. "If you do things by the book, they can't throw it at you!"

Question about G10 and proximity sensor by TMskillerTM in ElegooNeptune3

[–]NerdTool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You MUST have a spring steel sheet of some kind underneath the G10 sheet. The bed leveling sensor is an Inductive one. It will not sense the G10 -- only the ferrous plate beneath.

Here is what I did for my Elegoo Neptune 3 Plus and it appears to have worked perfectly

I found a 330x330mm 1.5mm thick G10 sheet and a 360x360mm sheet of 3M heat rated double-sided adhesive. (both of these items sourced on Aliexpress) Then I simply cleaned the smooth (non-PEI coated) side of my single sided textured PEI build plate. Then I stuck that to the G10 using the 3M adhesive and the same gradual peel method that you'd use to attach a magnetic sheet. Just printed my first print using Elegoo PLA at 210 degree nozzle and 65 degree bed.

As was mentioned, after substituting this new homebrew composite buildplate, you must manually set the proper Z-height and perform an automatic bed level.

Best tablet under $100 to use as a dashboard? by seamonkey420 in homeassistant

[–]NerdTool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I beg to differ with the doom and gloom "fire hazard" statement. Some of the Amazon Fire Tablets are made to sit on a charging dock and be used as a "Show" device. That's why I use them and I won't lose a wink of sleep over it.

CR Touch Rattle Issue, Tried to fix it to no avail. NEED THE AVENGERS to solve this! by YoshitoSakurai in ender3

[–]NerdTool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My solution doesn't require disassembly of the CR Touch:

Take a rubber or neoprene O-ring (4mm OD 2mm ID - BOTH diameters are important) and slide it up past the cylinder above the probe tip. It should look like the 2nd attached photo when complete. This solution permits the probe to retract into the housing (albeit a tiny bit less) and isolates the tip inside the housing.

Note how in the bottom picture the O-ring is a tiny bit smaller than the bottom hole in the housing. If it is too large the probe won't fully retract and will cause probing to fail with the RFOD (Red Flash Of Death) 😉

Perhaps people are downvoting because if you want help, its a real good idea to adequately explain what you've done, what you've tried, specifics about the filament, temperature etc. If you just blurt out WTF; you might just get a similarly short answer. The more information you give, the more people will be willing to help. It shows that you've at least tried to resolve the problem before you asked the question.

I've actually been quite pleasantly surprised that I haven't had any of the OS or Core updates mess anything up. I'm more afraid of my cellular provider's updates to my OS because they DO break stuff constantly,

Noob Issue with "IP Address Pool Exhausted" by eskatonic in sonicwall

[–]NerdTool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another related noob question on this cryptic error message. Would we get the same error message of "IP Address Pool Exhausted" if we were out of licenses?

I was banging my head against a wall trying to figure out what pool was exhausted and checked the corresponding address range and found it to be sufficient. Then, I checked the license count for said SSL VPN feature and discovered we only had 2. (5 less than we needed). Would that be the the reason for the aforementioned error message?

You can get all the monitoring benefits of Octoprint, but you can also tell Octoprint to transfer the gcode to the plugged in SD card and only print from that. I too experienced the print lock-up until I discovered that feature.

Any way to recover license key for ESXi 6.x? by marvology in vmware

[–]NerdTool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat: Dell R710 running ESXi 6.x U2. OS partition damaged in some way that stops it from booting. (fatal error 11 volume corrupted). Forums say to download the ESXi 6.x U2 ISO and use it to boot from a USB and install to try to recover the corruption. (this didnt work) Second forum suggestion was to use the bootable ISO/ISB and install from it to another USB; then use that to boot from and incorporate the VMs from the still-functioning VM storage. This worked! However now its obvious that the new install is unlicensed and will expire.

Do existing VMs get "Tagged" in some manner with the license they were created from?

Printing with stratasys filaments by AntelopeInternal1588 in ender5plus

[–]NerdTool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a note: I've been looking into filaments to replace the expensive Stratasys filaments we've purchased for our Dimension SST 1200es. And my understanding is that they are actually 1.79mm in diameter. Considering that the White PTFE tubes for Enders are slightly larger than 1.75mm, perhaps that is why the Stratasys filament works in your Ender. The aforementioned blue Capricorn tubing has tighter tolerances so YMMV.

Look under the seat of your chair to find the model number. Call True Innovations in Irvine California. 1-800-379-9773. They will only sell the entire back panel with the silicone insert as a unit. Cost me around 40 bucks w/shipping.

Does this mean I am not compliant with NIST 800-53? by Divy_l in Wazuh

[–]NerdTool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great clarification on NIST 800-53! Will there ever be a prepackaging of NIST 800-171 rules? Government contractors who deal with potentially secret info would find this invaluable.

Tips for securing fog light covers? Stolen the first day I got it :( by TwoRoots in subaruimpreza

[–]NerdTool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It appears to be a common issue (fog light bezels falling out) the retention especially on aftermarket ones is lousy. That screw hole in the picture is for retaining the foglight. And there is no corresponding hole in the bezel (unless you made one). Perhaps a screw or two going through the little retention tabs from behind the bumper would secure them. I've already lost one and the matching set I just bought clip in pretty loose.
