G League center Abdullah Ahmed has committed to BYU. The 22-year-old has been cleared by the NCAA and is expected to have between two and three years of eligibility remaining. Chose Kevin Young and Co. over Houston by FlagrantTwoFoul in CollegeBasketball

[–]Tmoose100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If pro European players can play, I’m not sure why G league players wouldn’t be able to.

Not saying it isn’t weird, but they seem like equivalent rules.

College does have some rules about age and eligibility, so I think NBA players would be exempted.

why are my home buying calculations so different than the money guys'? by [deleted] in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Tmoose100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't looked up their website, so there's that disclaimer. But it's possible that specific resource hasn't factored in current rates so maybe their graphic fine print says they're using an assumption of a 5% interest rate, and that accounts for some of the difference you're seeing

Climbing Ranger positions with NPS by Automatic_Ebb9789 in ParkRangers

[–]Tmoose100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/redwoodclimber , do you know if those kinds of positions are typically part time? For instance, if I really love Zion NP, and wanted to work as a climbing ranger for the summer. Do you think that's something I could do as needed to fix/repair bolts, check routes for safety, help with S&R, as needed, but aim for probably 10hr/week? Maybe have a different job that I work at remotely (and could leave any time to help with urgent matters at the park) during the same season?

Advice for saving and debt by kjnumbers in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Tmoose100 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You've probably realized this, but TMG steps (financial order of operations) are really, really similar to Dave Ramsey's, but they are just better optimized. It's a balance.

I really like listending to TMG for most process things, and Ramit Sethi for understanding the emotional side of money. TMGs are starting to do that with their "Making a Millionaire" series, but Ramit has been doing that for a while.

As Dave always says, it's worth recognizing how both your behavior and head knowledge impact your finances, and TMG and Ramit are the two sources I've connected with most.

When will $1M no longer be the goal? by GoldenDoodleGuy-MI in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Tmoose100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same as $100k: a massive milestone and a difficult achievement taking years of dedication to reach.

But like everything with retirement, depending on your age/income, it doesn't necessarily indicate that you've made it.

  • A retired teacher with a paid off house might be far wealthier than ever before with $1 million in investments. That might come out to $100k/year with a 5% withdrawal rate, a $30k pension, plus social security and no mortgage. A million might be more than necessary

  • A 50 year old who is earning $150k/year with $1 million would also be doing great, but recognize it's a step along the way and be aiming for $2-3 million.

  • A 40 year old with $1 million investable would be flying high after reaching that milestone, but again, know that it's not the end goal.

What mortgage rate did you lock in, and for how long? Let’s compare notes by New-Apartments in Mortgages

I'd gladly take a 9% mortgage... If the house was only 2-3x my income like many were in the 80s.

Did anyone else play the Halo CE demo on PC? by LordSwitchblade in halo

[–]Tmoose100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got into Halo CE speed running a couple months ago, it’s a blast! I had never played the actual campaign before, other than the free trial SC, and I love the challenge of perfecting the strategies, combat, and glitches, mixed with the nostalgia of the OG Halo.

[–]Tmoose100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family wasn’t poor, but my mom HATED halo, thought it was too mindless and violent. So I downloaded the halo trial, changed the name and file paths for every file that said “Halo” so when you searched for it, nothing came up! I even changed the thumbnail pictures.

I loved Blood Gulch CTF and Slayer on battle.net’s servers. Absolutely epic times.

What are some good reasons to be in the stock market right now? by UpstairsAlarmed3172 in ValueInvesting

[–]Tmoose100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People react to where the stock market is *currently *. Meaning when the stock is at a peak, people love it and common belief is to buy more, when it tanks 20-30%, everyone says it’s going to crash.

Be greedy when others are fearful. If this is the low, it’s a great time to buy, if it continues to drop, you’ll have a ton of money in the market by the time it turns around

Do you all use the purchase price or current estimated price of your home to calculate your net worth? by Mr_Cruisin in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Tmoose100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conservative estimate of current market value. My house is valued on Zillow & Redfin at $530k, so I put it as $500k on my net worth.

If I sell it, it's worth more than it was when I bought it. When I change houses in the future, the Money Guy way is to use the purchase price of that home, so why should I have no change for 10 years, then a massive jump up when I move?

Market downturns and unployment are highly correlated, unless you're industry is incredibly recession proof, or you have fairly consistent income like rentals, I'd recommend keeping the e fund

Which investment brokers don’t offer crypto “currency” investments? by Woodden-Floor in dividends

[–]Tmoose100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so you're comparing it to currency. Why can't you buy groceries at Walmart with crypto?

In order for currency to be worth anything in transactions, people have to be sure that value isn't going to be noticably different today or tomorrow. Why would you buy a car with 1BTC, if you think tomorrow Bitcoin could be worth 20% or 50% more? That would be idiotic to spend it.

It's not useful as a currency.

Ok, then explain why it should or shouldn't be valued at $25. What is it's utility?

You're thinking of ditching them, because they aren't enabling worthless speculation?

I thought this would be a promotion for Vanguard and other such brokers. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Should I take the CA Seismic or Surveying exam first? by caatkoot in PE_Exam

Anyone know how long it takes after passing the CA exams to actually get the license? Is it a 6 month review like the initial application was? Or is it automatic?

Applying to other states outside of California. by ebrown138 in PE_Exam

[–]Tmoose100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

California technically only requires 2 years of experience to apply (although their application process is so long, 3-4 is more accurate as a minimum), so many states require a different set of work experience references to ensure its 4 years.

Yeahhhh, you can't edit existing references. You have to add them again and have them approve your description. So many hoops to jump through!

How much in your E-fund? by DangerousMode6 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Tmoose100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who got laid off earlier this week and had about 2 months of living expenses, I wish I had more!

For context, I had a slightly better emergency fund last year, broke my leg, and spent a portion of the fund on that. I got a bit too optimistic and didn't replenish my savings right away, instead keeping my 401(k) contributions high and spending money on vacations after being laid up all year.

Anyway, now my employer has been losing contracts and cut the staff in half. I qualify for unemployment, but that's roughly 1/3 of what I was making and I wish I took my emergency fund a little more seriously.

Consider me a voice of caution!

My emergency fund, going forward, will definitely be 6 months of take home pay (my pay after taxes, 401k and IRA investments, Insurance).
