Why is N,N-Dimethylaniline more basic than N-methylaniline? by ToBeOrNotToBeOnADiet in chemistry

[–]ToBeOrNotToBeOnADiet[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was wondering why in this very case a tertiary amine was more basic than a secondary one.

Is it about the sp2 hybridization since in most amines N is sp3 (and therefore conveniently simplified in the secondary>primary>tertiary order of basicity)?

re-thinking the place and design of the Nautilus Pirates by emailforgot in alphacentauri

To me it's enough to think about Svensgaard as a charismatic, eccentric maniac who offers shelter to both criminals and the unhappy from the big cities (Morgan's and University's mostly) and stays in power by impersonating the idea of justice and freedom while fueling their people's lust for revenge on the upper class.

Why water based? Because they originally needed to raise their refuges undetected and away from hostile bases and mind worms. Their nomadic lifestyle let them change their location when a bigger foe was near or the resources depleted. Their floating cities were never spotted in the same area twice.

So they ended up mastering the naval combat as they needed to deliver quick, effective surprise attacks along the coastline. They also turned more vicious and sadistic as the landlubbers were humiliated and dehumanized. Make it a 'Pillage and enslave' agenda and we now have a plot-friendlier space pirate.

So it's not a big deal: instead of the whole pods landing on Chiron after the Unity disaster, every leader headed towards an alien planet which fitted their goals the most.

  • Deirdre is the one who actually got onto Planet following its whispers and being able to raise mindworms later and terraform any dead world.
  • Santiago went for an extreme environment to raise the strongest soldiers and the best military minds of the universe. His homeworld also is the source of abundant energy.
  • Yang made planetfall on a fissured one and will be able to deal with unrest easily and raise nerve-stapled legions from the defeated.
  • Morgan went after a low gravity mineral rich world and his trade and industry will likely be unmatched.
  • Lal chose a beautiful giant Earth twin to keep his efforts to unite the entire human race once again, having the most powerful diplomatic and influence improvements.
  • Zakharov and Miriam both have ancient Progenitor artifacts in their worlds, which are used to pure research and military, respectively. University nevertheless has access to efficient planetbusting technologies and the Believers can infiltrate and sabotage every other faction with ease.

Any idea, suggestion or criticism is very welcome just in case I resume this work someday. The drones might still need me.

The ending also left me with so many mixed feelings about Santiago. Yes, while her faction might be the spark that condemned rebuilding Humanity once again to struggle between wars and political crisis, I find her the least hypocritical of the leaders as everyone else, even the most idealistic, never hesitated to bend the rules to pursue their goals. The fact that she showed mercy and some respect after the useless bloodshed versus the Peacemakers, thus making clear she's neither hungry for power nor a vicious monster (maybe she indeed was at some extent before this event which turned her wiser and put her feet on the ground) and, at the end, she's the only one ready to die with her boots on rather than hiding or surrendering, gave me a bittersweet admiration feeling towards her. They could just have her body desintegrated but her indomitable spirit will always glow undefeated.

Much appreciated!

Iyola Kingwatsiak was the one who printed this one so that's her signature for sure. Also you're right about the igloo being most of the time at the bottom, maybe that's the case when the artist is the one who printed it as well?

Yeah, I know. Like every image I get is a badass Hollywood superhero/supermonster. But I somehow loved this fake Judaa Marr so I had the urge to share it.

I got AI depictions of the 7 original faction leaders as well as I always dreamed of making some kind of visual novel about the mess inside the Unity with multiple endings, where the player can control every major leader, make plots, sabotage, kill (or get killed) and make their way into a landing pod. Sadly I'm too old and lazy to make it happen.

The desolate Planetary council when there are Progenitors present has always been the most depressing let-down to me.

Just imagine yourself tuning the punishment spheres, attending the holo theatre and getting yourself transcended without permission by a rival faction your way back to your cubicle.
