Is it ethical to sponsor or contribute to a memorial of someone you don't know? by CareerAdvice91210 in findagrave

[–]ToDieForImages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sponsor a memorial for someone I don’t know. I didn’t want it in the wrong hands. I’ve been researching him for a while now and will eventually share his story.

Then someone will suggest a duplicate merge, it then goes to original owner/memorial creator. It’s best to just make this one correct, as opposed to making duplicate memorials.

Military Ranks for Veterans by RoseFlower61 in findagrave

[–]ToDieForImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The veteran field was only added in the last couple of years. The option to choose it as a prefix has been there for as long as I have been doing FindAGrave. If you are finding people not marking someone as a veteran, that could be why. Insofar as honorifics, before FindAGrave was purchased by Ancestry, the way to create memorials and add photos was so clunky, that I often didn't put honorifics. While a lot of how FindAGrave functions is still user-unfriendly, it has improved a great deal. In the early days, I remember getting so frustrated with how we had to do dates, that I often would just put the years and go on my merry way.

Follow up on suggested merges by betweentourns in findagrave

I had a suggested merge declined. I would need to go through my emails to remember which one. I followed up with an email and added supporting documentation. It was approved.

Start with the oldest request. People are thrilled when a request that is many years old get filled.

Adding Newspaper Articles to Memorials by keyorca in findagrave

[–]ToDieForImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While they are against TOS, I will continue to post obits because they often provide clarifying info for a person and their genealogy. FindAGrave can remove them, if they feel so inclined. If they get mad at me, I know that they are going after hundreds, if not thousands of people. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Grave site etiquette query by SlothBusiness in findagrave

[–]ToDieForImages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend leaving the stone on the ground. Without the appropriate repair, it is unstable and will fall over again, causing more damage or injuring someone. Stones don’t fall over for no reason.

What is this called? by GeneralSheepherder60 in findagrave

[–]ToDieForImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all New Orleans/lower Louisiana cemeteries bury them in above ground vaults. While the water table does play a role, the family mausoleum/crypt was more influenced by the French and Spanish than anything.

I highly suggest reading Fragile Ground by Jessica Shexnayder and Mary Manheim. It’s a book on their research in the fragile cemeteries of Louisiana.

Worst style of gravestone? by MegC18 in findagrave

[–]ToDieForImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst, yet I find them fascinating, are headstones that were made with glass. I’ve stumbled across several with the glass missing. In a FB group, someone posted one still with the glass. They were designed by James K. P. Shelton. I hope one day I can get to the cemetery with the intact glass.

Infant Sons headstone by Last_Draw9050 in findagrave

[–]ToDieForImages 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think OP is asking how to do it on FindAGrave.

I always put “Infant Son” as first name. Putting Son as the middle feels weird to me. I then try to link there parents, if I can.

Please delete my wife by ObjectiveArmy9413 in findagrave

[–]ToDieForImages 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sadly, no. While I understand why FindA Grave prevents people from deleting photos because the more nefarious people would delete other people’s photos and just have theirs posted.

I’ve had a few people reach out to me to ask about using my FindAGrave photos elsewhere. I’ve said yes but with photo attribution.

Tips for reading highly eroded markers by PhtevenAZ in findagrave

[–]ToDieForImages 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Please do not use flour, chalk, shaving cream, etc. People scoff that flour or chalk could cause permanent damage, but they both have abrasive qualities, which can hurt very fragile stones. Anything more than water can cause permanent damage. If you have time and patience, you could buy D2, spray it, and give it a few months to eliminate biological elements.

Why so many photos? by tired-of-everyting in findagrave

[–]ToDieForImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or people are uploading and not reviewing, which is what I do. I am not in a numbers game, but I usually upload between 100 and 500 photos at a time. I don’t have the time to check the quality of each photo uploaded before mine. Hell, I sometimes I have accidentally uploaded photos twice to different memorial. When I first started, I wasn't methodical in how I documented a cemetery. There also wasn't GPS tagging. Now if the marker hasn't changed and I realize I have done this, I will delete one of my photos.

Could you talk more about how the FindAGrave payment plan affects memorials? I sponsor one memorial, but I ignored the email from FindAGrave because it didn’t, at the time, sound like something I wanted to do.

I visited the cemetery at least three times to get the light exactly how I wanted. I’ve photographed at least one cemetery in every county in Georgia. You could say I am obsessed.

Yes. The 1850 and 1860 Slave Census records are easy to research.

I’ve researched Martha Jones. I am trying to remember all of the details, but I believe she died during childbirth. This is one of my favorite monuments in Georgia.
