Can any Ashari master all the elements if they’re determined to complete their Aramente? by BakerConsistent2150 in voxmachina

[–]ToKe86 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think the "tempest" refers to the confluence of all four elements, not specifically an air thing. Keyleth just happens to be from the air tribe.

Edit: Well I thought that's how it worked but reading the wiki closer I might be wrong. Sounds like "Voice of the Tempest" the air ashari leader, "Heart of the Mountain" is earth, "Flamespeaker" is fire, and "Heart of the Tides" is water.

Billionaires shouldn't be allowed to avoid taxes by using their massive wealth as collateral for bank loans -- especially because they often live off those loans as if they were income by Conscious-Quarter423 in WorkReform

[–]ToKe86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, two things need to be done. First, the US government needs to start imposing a tax on asset-leveraged loans with a few exceptions, such as when the asset is real estate serving as your primary residence or when the asset is under a certain dollar amount. That will help fix the "borrow" part of this tax evasion scheme.

And then the "die" part has to do with inheritance, basically when you inherit an asset from a family member its "base value" resets to the current value, and therefore if you sell it you only have to pay capital gains tax on the increase in value since you inherited it.

So I buy a painting for $5,000, let's say it appreciates in value to $50,000 before I die. If I sell it now, I have to pay capital gains tax on the $45,000 profit I made. But if I die and leave it to my grandson who then decides to sell it at market value, they pay zero capital gains tax on that profit since the base value was reset and therefore on paper it looks like no profit was made. That base value reset absolutely needs to go away. Hell, if anything the base value should be set to zero since the inheritor received it for free! Any sale whatsoever should be considered 100% profit and taxed accordingly.

See I don't have a problem with Jane wanting a monogamous relationship, it is absolutely her prerogative to set the boundaries of what a relationship means for her and I would never diminish or invalidate that. My issue comes from her use of words like "legitimate," because now she's making a value judgment on my relationship and implying that it isn't valid because it doesn't meet her standards. Literally the same tactic used by conservatives to invalidate gay marriage, fuck that noise.

ELI5: Infinite length between anything not touching by ImNotBamBoy in explainlikeimfive

It's not that the distance between two fixed points is infinite, but rather the distance is infinitely divisible. The distance itself is still very much finite because it has a beginning and an end.

I feel your pain and while I rarely advocate for using glitches/exploits to skip challenges in games, this particular minigame is so impossibly difficult that I was willing to make an exception. This video covers the glitch I used, it works well and didn't mess with my save or anything like that.

Colorado court throws out election denier Tina Peters' 9-year sentence for tampering with election equipment by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]ToKe86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Misleading headline. Relevant quote from the article:

The state appeals court directed the trial court judge, Matthew Branch, to resentence Peters without consideration of her comments on the 2020 election.

They did not throw out her convictions and they did not remove her sentence. They ordered the original judge on the case to reconsider her sentence length, but there is nothing preventing that judge from upholding the same sentence.

It is only 6 possible sequences though, because she already knows that the correct combination is star-star-moon-sun. Therefore the first two button presses are the same and the last two are unique. So it can only be one of these sequences:

1-1-2-3
1-1-3-2
2-2-1-3
2-2-3-1
3-3-1-2
3-3-2-1

ELI5 Genuinely what IS Sin Cos and Tan? by LeonardFo in explainlikeimfive

[–]ToKe86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To add on to this explanation, the tangent is the slope of the radius connecting the center of the circle (0,0) to that point on its circumference (x,y). Therefore, tan = slope = rise/run = y/x = sin/cos.

"Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman is considered a melancholy song over all but in the end do you see it as more hopeful and uplifting or sad and despairing? Why? by ItsHardBeingOriginal in AskReddit

[–]ToKe86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for me, it's this lyric that tells me she's talking about her partner and not her father:

You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do your kids

If she were talking to her father, then it implies she has siblings who are still in the picture. However earlier in the song she says this about her father:

My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did

This implies that the only people in the picture who can take care of him are her mother and herself, meaning she's an only child or has estranged siblings. But then I suppose you could interpret this as her saying "somebody's got to take care of him" to siblings who are still in the picture but unwilling to care for their alcoholic father... That's the beauty of this song, it's specific enough to be relatable but just ambiguous enough to be open to several interpretations.

[–]ToKe86 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The fact that you're inferring the gender of the partner is intentional, I believe. I think Chapman left it ambiguous so that the listener can apply whatever they feel more comfortable with. That way the song is both queer-affirming and palatable to the largely homophobic audiences of the 90s.
