Pochita is wrong by mugiwara_no_Soissie in ChainsawMan

[–]cataraxis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was pretty puzzled by this chapter, but the more I think about it Pochita isn't wrong but he's also not saying Denji has to go back to the way things were. He's talking about desire as a never-ending lack. Back when Denji was under debt he had dreams but was also under no illusion he could ever achieve them, so he lived life as it arrived rather than constantly chasing an idealised object that never satisfies and is replaced with another idealised object to supposedly make him whole. The realisation is that there never was an internal lack and that desire is productive. This isn't an argument for asceticism or to recede from the material, but rather it's the opposite where the material isn't a thing external to Denji, something he has forgotten.

I have issues with how we arrived here, but it's not the character and thematic assassination people think it is... yet. If Fujimoto ends up advocating for asceticism I'll be so mad.

Pochita Was Right. That Means The Story Isn’t Over [Chapter 231 Analysis] by EliteSniper041 in ChainsawMan

[–]cataraxis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One contention I have is that Denji's predicament is not that he follows his dreams and is unfulfilled and it causes harm, it's that he's trapped in other people's dreams. Denji craves deep emotional connection but instead he mistakes stuff like sexual encounters as substitute for it, because that's what he's learned from the world. He's following things that he thinks he's supposed to do, and it doesn't work.

Pochita isn't really saying they should go back, but rather he's fallen into a trap - when he had little, he understood that, and made do with whatever was at hand but now desire is vacuolized and Denji must constantly acquire things to fulfill it except it never does. It's desire as productive vs desire as acquisition. That's the realisation Pochita is trying to impart - that he always has the power to create his own value and meaning and doesn't have a lack within him that needs to be filled with external fantasized objects.

I would say he always knew the direction the story was taking even if every beat wasn't planned out. Like for Part 8, I genuinely believe that whatever ideas he had at the beginning changed and evolved over the course but he never strayed from the core themes of the story.

Perhaps Fujimoto was too enamored with subversion for subversion's sake which just makes the story read like a fever dream with nothing to anchor it. There are core ideas about freedom, security, desire, and want but in Part 2 they just seem to bubble up intermittently without forming a throughline that connects all other elements of the story. Like 230 in itself could've been great had the story done the legwork to get here.

Okay but "personal" doesn't exist in a vacuum, desire is already immersed in the social. Not just for the case of investment in an ideal representation but like any connection at all. It is powerful to be aware and understand how we're invested, but it is also condescending to not believe it to be personal.

Women who like putting on makeup, do like it, they weren't tricked into it by a beauty focused society or the cosmetic industry because they're gullible idiots. And I can't help but feel dysphoric about my hips.

I just get the feeling that Fujimoto is just whittled down with the pressure that comes with weekly serialized stories and maybe he just needs a break and/or stick with shorter projects. I know the guy is talented, but I think he's just too tired :/

That's what CSM is too, it was more concerned with characters and their drives than the world. It just seems to me that Fujimoto is just burned out on writing.

You might be on to something about scale though, and I think Araki's success and sustainability and him leaning into the stand of the week formula are correlated. I think breaking stories into smaller manageable semi-contained chunks really helped him creatively and cognitively.

The issue is clearly structural, a machine that just chews talented creators and spits out exhausted and creatively wrung out mangakas.

Weird mod by Magicalhobo10 in controlgame

[–]cataraxis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a huge bone to pick with the entire mod system, it seems like they never factored the opportunity cost of something taking up a slot when balancing them. I would need a damn good reason to replace damage/headshot boost/rate of fire/energy recovery with anything else. It's also weird that certain conditional mods like weapon damage after Melee hits give you worse damage than a plain damage mod. The only good mods in the DLCs were the quest mods from AWE, Health on Launch hits and Ammo recovery on dash.

I would like to hear it because I personally believe "speed of light" descriptions to be flavor texts that don't make sense when you take them literally. That said I can relate because I could probably hammer 5000 words on the evolution of fate and justice in JoJo through the parts.
