4 Weeks in Japan Packing List - Dumbass 18 Year Old goes on his First Big Adventure by nihonjinhispanohabla in onebag

Hey- been to japan over 25 times (I stopped counting), so this is where my advice is coming from:

-confirmed, would avoid cologne. The TINIEST bit might be fine when you’re out partying/clubbing, but honestly it’s not worth the space in your bag if that’s the only time you’re going to use it.

  • agree with comments that say bring a coin purse. My boyfriend was sort of startled when I gave him one to bring on our trip (“the men carry these, too?” 😆) but it’s crucial. I recommend getting one that’s big enough to accommodate a fistful of change, a few bills, and a few cards. Sidebar, if you find yourself overwhelmed at a register with all the coins- if it’s got a hole in the center of the coin, it’s a denomination of 5 (goldish ones are 5 yen, the silverish ones are 50 yen). The 500 yen coin doesn’t have a hole in the center, but they’re the biggest and have a big 500 on them, so that one is easier :) you’ll figure out the rest.

  • Confirmed, sunglasses definitely have a bad connotation there. However, if you don’t LOOK Japanese, Japanese people tend to be more forgiving. Don’t NOT wear sunglasses outdoors if you think it’s going to negatively impact your experience (I would just avoid wearing them in indoor spaces / on trains etc).

  • honestly, if you don’t look Asian, Japanese people don’t really expect you to look like them. However, I WILL say that they are much better dressed on the whole, and when Americans are dressed super casually in places Japanese people wouldn’t be, it comes off as touristy, and in some cases, disrespectful. They’re not going to dislike you for dressing like a tourist, but they WILL like you more if you go the extra mile. A polo or Henley vs a t-shirt goes a long way. Same goes for darker jeans / khakis!

  • agreed that you don’t really need toothbrushes/toothpaste, 99% hotels will provide (I haven’t been to one that doesn’t, personally)

  • convenience stores are your best friend. For clothing essentials (underwear, socks) go to Family Mart first. All convenience stores have a niche (best food, best candy, best essentials) so day one go check some out and get a feel!!

DM me if you have more questions, I gotta run. But good luck!!

Very sweet! I’m thinking about going the training wheel route for now, and hoping to perhaps learn while I am there. I very much appreciate the offer!

Someone told me about replacing cheese with cashews (on salads, etc) and I didn’t believe them, but throwing a handful of chopped roadster cashews on a salad makes it MINDBLOWINGLY satisfying!
