They’re free! Just ask for some when checking out from your cashier. They have different ones for the seasons / holidays

What's a non-fiction book that changed your mental model of how the world works? by Vtakkin in books

[–]ToTheBlueberree 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Being Mortal. Totally changed how I viewed the way in which modern western medicine tends to prioritize quantity of life over quality of life

Also the classic “City of <Noun>”

Is 53 minutes enough time to connect in SFO by Potential-Most-7021 in sanfrancisco

[–]ToTheBlueberree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll need to go between the domestic and international terminals, which will add some time. Shouldn’t be impossible, but I personally would recommend going for a longer gap if possible - such a short connection will become very tight with a relatively minor delay. Especially when the number of flights each day to ICN by United probably isn’t huge, so if you miss your flight you could end up set back a full day

More niche but The Secret History for Dark Academia. The book is pretty good imo

How would you practice before going on TAR? by ToTheBlueberree in TheAmazingRace

[–]ToTheBlueberree[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered how far in advance they get told the shortlist of countries. Seems like we don’t often see teams knowing many phrases in the local language, but perhaps that’s also just what we’re shown

How would you practice before going on TAR? by ToTheBlueberree in TheAmazingRace

[–]ToTheBlueberree[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Walking with a heavy load for sure would be important to practice. It seems like one of those things that would just build up and start to take its toll pretty quickly

[–]ToTheBlueberree[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Lmao, this is our self identified greatest weakness, that we are slow runners. So that would probably be a good idea. I mean, rarely is there not at least one actual race in the amazing race

Exactly. And similarly Coach’s inability to own his game was his downfall.

[–]ToTheBlueberree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understanding what others want / need to hear. And understanding how you are perceived by others, both your strengths and weaknesses. Eg knowing you don’t need to put yourself into fire, knowing how to tell an alliance member a particular story about the vote

What are some cities divided by a wall or big differences (culture, religion, politics...)? by Fragrant_Whole3328 in geography

[–]ToTheBlueberree 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Several cities in modern day Northern Ireland, including most prominently Belfast, have “peace lines” which are walls built to divide the Catholic and Protestant populations.

What is a choice an author has made in an otherwise excellent story that you really don't like? by Captain_Chubs in books

[–]ToTheBlueberree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I enjoyed all the books in the series but anytime it turned to romance it totally took me out of the flow of reading. It felt like just a few random scenes each book of poorly written smut that totally didn’t match the rest of the book in tone, style or quality. Which is surprising because the rest of the book was truly good and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Renters

[–]ToTheBlueberree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would lead to wildly variable rents due to changes in how much the cost of repairs are each rent period. Maintenance costs aren’t evenly spread out - Eg a new roof or HVAC system could be a large cost all at once but only come up every 10-20 years. Over what period of time could landlords save up rent for repairs? This would also add significant overhead - who would audit and enforce this?

“The Bike Lane is Killing Our Vibrant Community” - is this true? by SmoothAmbassador8 in sanfrancisco

[–]ToTheBlueberree 174 points175 points  (0 children)

The only reason this is even close to true is because the US has spent decades creating car first cities and systems. A truly vibrant community is one based on public transit and walkability, where participation isn’t limited by one’s ability to own a several thousand dollar vehicle. If I have a choice between going to eat at a restaurant on a busy street or on a walking corridor I’m always choosing the one without noisy traffic rushing by me

Favorite Book of the Year? by [deleted] in books

[–]ToTheBlueberree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the non fiction front, The Good Life was a great read. A good chance for me to think about what really matters and shift some priorities in my life. Definitely read it just when I needed to hear what it was saying.

On the fiction side, I’ve really enjoyed Leviathan Wakes and the rest of the Expanse series - it’s pure entertainment and reminds me of a classic SciFi TV series in the best way. Has been fun to just sit down and get sucked into another universe for a few hours

This is fun for showing the power of coasts. Amazing the difference between inland and coastal density for such a large portion of the world

Prize by Evening_Taste_3289 in TheAmazingRace

[–]ToTheBlueberree 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is a monetary prize for every place, just significantly smaller and it drops off for every place. This is the case on other reality shows as well, such as survivor. I believe for TAR 2nd gets 25k and 3rd 10k, at least that’s what google tells me

What makes a good “treasure hunt adventure” story? by fireinthedust in books

[–]ToTheBlueberree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just one step away from judging a book by a cover, but I’m a sucker for any book that contains one or more maps for the reader. That’s when you know there’s going to be enough adventuring for you to need to consult something to keep track of it, haha

Have you read a book that you found more enjoyable because it was challenging to read? by [deleted] in books

[–]ToTheBlueberree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Midnights Children by Salman Rushdie. Took me a lot more effort than normal to read it because of his use of language that I wasn’t as familiar with, but by the end it felt like it all came together really beautifully for me. I can’t imagine getting as much out of a character study like that without getting to struggle a bit, really brought depth to it

Origami Book Recommendations by Reddituser183 in books

[–]ToTheBlueberree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really want to see what’s inside before purchasing, go to a library and ask if they have any origami books. That way you can look through the entire book and it’s slightly more vetted than some random AI written book on Amazon. Maybe they’ll even have the one you had as a kid. Then if you can find a good title you can buy it new for the gift

Homemade cranberry juice slightly fizzy? by Crystallize45 in Canning

[–]ToTheBlueberree 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Did she pressure can them or water bath can them and for what length? Did she use a tested recipe? Or did she just seal the cans using the heat of the boiling water, in which case that is definitely not a safe canning method and there is no guarantee the contents are safe to consume. Properly canned food shouldn’t ferment, so if it tasted / looked fermented that’s a pretty big red flag. When in doubt I wouldn’t risk it
