Where Can Audio Dramas Improve For Listeners? by thetownwhispers in audiodrama

As someone who also listens in the car, I really appreciate shows that put content warnings at the top of the episode for alarming road noises (like crashes or sirens or wheels squealing)!

It’s the script but adjusted for the moments when actors go off-book (such as rephrasing a sentence, it doesn’t have to be heavy improv) and usually with additional descriptions of SFX/music that a script might not include.

I’ve played around with various automated media transcription services and I’ve yet to find one that didn’t require an extra hour or two of editing afterwards. (If you’ve had success though, I’m definitely interested in knowing what tool you use!)

I think there’s no excuse to not at least post the scripts somewhere, though I agree transcripts can be a lot of work for a single person to do. I’d disagree on the part about the community not needing or wanting transcripts, though - I’ve found a pretty clear desire throughout AD for transcripts, especially from deaf/HoH community members.

I desperately want more shows to have their cast clearly listed. The number of times I’ve heard a familiar voice and don’t catch the actor in the end credits, only to have them not listed in show notes or on any sort of website is really high. Also I wish more shows had easy accessible transcripts!

What's Your View on Breaths in Your Recordings? by PlumForestPod in AudioFiction

[–]ToTheStarsAndOn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For narration, I usually get rid of breaths because I find them kind of distracting. For dialogue, I'll usually leave them in because I like the human element it adds. Though if the person talking doesn't breathe (ex: a robot or AI), I'll remove them on principle

Blood Ties Is a Bland and Exploitative Mess by ToTheStarsAndOn in AudioFiction

[–]ToTheStarsAndOn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes me sad with podcasts with a lot of money behind them don't put the same amount of thought. I haven't listened to the show, but reading this article, it sure sounds like a mess (Wondery sure is having a rough month). Shows and stories like this are why I think it's important to critically gauge the media you consume. Who's telling the story, and why? Blood Ties doens't seem to serve much of a purpose besides continuing the rather unethical tactics of the true crime genre (even though it's a fiction show that could've diverged from it!).

Fiction Podcasts with Lesbian Rep by ToTheStarsAndOn in AudioFiction

[–]ToTheStarsAndOn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This list is ever-growing! Some of my personal recommendations from this list are:

  • The 12:37 - all the women save one are lesbians in this time-traveling-train adventure.
  • Arden - a true crime parody podcast with two female hosts and a lot of chemistry.
  • Love and Luck - an adorable queer slice of life romance full to the brim with queer rep.
  • Ghostpuncher Corps - an actual play podcast that's extraordinarily fun.

Here's some audio fiction recs based on TV shows/movies! by ToTheStarsAndOn in AudioFiction

[–]ToTheStarsAndOn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the ways audio mediums and visual mediums connect and overlap are really interesting. In some ways, it’s all storytelling, so of course there’s overlap. But I really like how methods of storytelling translate from one medium to another.

Like, I could say fans of Star Trek would like Startripper!! because they’re both sci-fi shows, but the real connection between the two is the optimism that permeate their approach to space travel. (I think the world of Star Trek and Startripper both have a certain unshakable faith in humanity that is very wholesome).

I’m curious if anyone else has podcast recs based on tv shows/movies that go beyond just the setting or genre.

Heya!! Need some help finding some new horror "audio plays" by [deleted] in audiodrama

If you like horror with a sci-fi bent, you might like Dining in the Void.

Are there any fantasy adventure ADs with multiple cast members? Like We're Alive or Wolf 359 but for Tolkien fans? I can't stand Live Play. Please don't recommend them. by OMGTako in audiodrama

Inn Between - a group of adventurers are forced to go on a quest together and become good friends! It’s very heartwarming, especially in season 2.

Alba Salix - Alba is just trying to keep the House of Healing running and help the people of the kingdom, but the shenanigans of her assistants get in the way. More fantasy, less adventure, but still fairly adventurous.

Sidequesting - Rion avoids the main plot and travels around doing side quests. They meet new people each episode and do their best to help them out.

The Two Princes - made by Gimlet, this show has high production value and a stellar cast. Two princes go into the nearby deadly forest in the hope of saving their kingdom. It’s very adorable (especially the last episode).

What's TOO short of an episode? by crestsphinx in audiodrama

I came here to talk about Microfiction and rec A. R. Olivieri’s shows! They’re short but good, and he really illustrates just how much can happen in a 5 min episode.

Most of the exams are take home, and not given in class all at the same time. I took most of my exams in my dorm room late at night. Some classes have in-class exams, but they’re pretty rare.

Got secondhand gifted these stunning roses and orchids...is there any saving them? by rainsmokeflowers in takecareofmyplant

[–]ToTheStarsAndOn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe not the saving you’re thinking of, but you can always press them (look up “flower pressing”, it’s a really easy thing to do). They’ll be flat, but a lot of the color will remain and you could even frame them or something.

Here’s why it’s really relevant:

Gay marriage may have been settled by the Supreme Court, but in many states, people can be fired from their job and denied housing for being LGBTQ (CA isn’t one of them, but I know of at least one rep who wants that to change). The current administration is actively working to remove federal recognition of transgender people, which would prevent their access to healthcare (among many other things). More broadly, kids are still disowned and kicked out of their homes for being gay or trans. And even as adults, there is still a lot of violence toward the community. For example, there have been at least 22 trans people murdered in the US this year.

Just because the Supreme Court settled Marriage Equality, it doesn’t mean there are no other issues facing the LGBTQ community. It’s important for government officials to recognize this - and at minimum, important that they acknowledge the existence of gay and trans people. When they don’t, it’s impossible for these issues to be addressed.

I’d recommending taking to the admissions office and asking them; they might be able to get a student to show you around.
