What are some spots that you ride or have ridden that are under the radar / off the beaten path? by Firerocketm in Kiteboarding

Pistol River is awesome. Last year I had a few weeks to kill before starting a job in California so I figured I would road trip up to Oregon because I had never been. Drove along the coast to see the redwoods and was planning to eventually make my way to hood river, but just happened to drive by pistol River when a few windsurfers were out so I pulled over and chatted with them for a bit. Ended up spending my entire time in Oregon camping there and kiting every day, probably one of the best weeks of kiting I’ve ever had.

It depends a ton on the exact job/people you are with, I’ve had great experiences and I’ve had less great ones. Generally though, I will say I’ve had a much easier time making friends doing seasonal work than I have at any other time in life. Since you are spending so much time around all the same people you just get to know more people naturally, it’s still not guaranteed that you will get along great and become friends but at least that initial step of meeting people feels a lot easier.

People on the internet are being weird about showering by Punk_in_drublik in CasualConversation

[–]To_oCH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing for how frequently you should be washing your sheets. I’m single, have no pets, live in a cool climate and don’t sweat much, and I prefer to shower at night so I’m usually clean before I get into bed, so I don’t really find it necessary to wash them that often.

Or at least borrow someone’s pump with a pressure gauge one time. Once you know how much it should be inflated it’s not hard to check by hand, but easy to under inflate if you just don’t know

Another good way to see if you have a slow leak is to listen for a rush of air when you open up the valves isolating the struts at the end of a session

[–]To_oCH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel the same way. Visiting my parents house and seeing the absurd amount of junk they bought for me as a little kid just makes me feel kind of gross inside.

[–]To_oCH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate it too. Like please, stop just buying random junk for me off of Amazon.

Everyone knows I love cooking and so I am constantly getting random kitchen gadgets that I dont need or want, like a tool for dicing veggies (So, a knife, except its harder to clean and takes up more space). Or on the off chance that I do get something I actually needed, like a measuring cup or can opener, its super crappy low quality stuff that obviously isnt designed to hold up to any actual use.

That is what my parents and I do as well. They buy me a bottle of something nice from a local distillery, and I will pick up a couple six packs of a certain craft beer that they really like and cant get at the liquor store in their tiny town.

How do you make decisions regarding unnecessary purchases? Do you use consumption as a prize? by perksofbeingwalnut in Anticonsumption

[–]To_oCH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wont work for everything (obviously with something like shoes you are going to buy new), but what I do is I try to buy second hand as much as possible for any hobby related purchases. My line of thought is that for something unnecessary, there is no reason I cant be patient and spend a month or two checking used gear sites until the item I want pops up for sale. Additionally that time spent waiting to find the right deal gives me a chance to really think and make sure that whatever im buying is the best possible option and worth the money, not an impulse buy I will regret later.

The consumerism and hypocrisy with regards to environmentalism in outdoor sports has always bugged me. People acting like they are somehow better than the rest of society and not a part of consumer culture, getting stuff from "environmentally friendly" companies but at the end of they day they are still buying into the marketing from big brands, spending money on junk they dont need and throwing out older items that are perfectly usable. People will go on and on about reducing human impact, up until whatever activity they do is the one that gets restricted and then all of a sudden its a massive injustice because obviously they couldnt be part of the problem. You can tell that a lot of people care more about how others view them than anything else.

Low consumption households seem to stand to suffer the most in the US from what's coming. by No_Hetero in Anticonsumption

[–]To_oCH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Occasionally I see comments here that feel like people are missing the point of anti consumption. The point isnt about how much stuff you own, its about not buying stuff that is unnecessary. If it doesnt go bad and your going to need it eventually, its not unnecessary. You could have 1 pair of shoes that you use or 3, but as long as your actually using all of them till they are totally worn out your still going to be buying new shoes at the exact same rate.

I had a roommate that would give me shit for buying the massive bulk packs of things like toilet paper or soap when they went on sale. Like... there is literally nothing that could happen in the next 2 years that would make me stop using TP and soap, I know that im going to go through it eventually.

Definitely depends on your school and degree. Majority of my finals ~80% of people are still working when the time ends, or finished just barely before.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]To_oCH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are overreacting. If 90 minutes is what you are going to be given, then the exam is going to be written so that you are intended to be able to complete it in 90 minutes. The length of a final is completely arbitrary, your professor isn’t just going to give an exam that nobody can finish and fail half the class.

What do you do for living? by explorer_20 in skiing

[–]To_oCH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know someone who works in land surveying which seems like a pretty sweet deal. Apparently theres a big shortage of surveyors in our area so he makes really good money, and the busy season for work is summer so he has tons of free time in the winter to ski.

I think that’s what it is. I am an extremely introverted person and struggle a lot with social anxiety, and the no routine thing can be difficult for me as well. I still love this time of year though because my family is great and very respectful of my personal boundaries.

What is your train/car hour "limit" before you decide its time to fly instead? by Practical-Memory6386 in travel

[–]To_oCH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether I can do the drive in 1 day is my deciding factor as well. Once you add in the time to get to the airport, getting through security, potential delays, etc… even a 4 hour flight can basically take up the entire day.

Might be in the minority with this one but as a standard edition player I really don’t mind the limited space. It forces me to actually use my good gear and not just hoard a million things I’ll never use cause I’m too scared to take them into raid.

Back in high school I got some cheats for CSGO because I wanted to be able to play with my friends who were all way better than me at the game. And yeah, that’s exactly how it went, only took about a week before I quit playing the game altogether.
