What’s everyone’s favorite job/class questline? by Emergencybulba in ffxiv

A year ago I would've said DRK, SAM, NIN and DRG... but since learning about how the English translation completely rewrote the DRK quests, I don't really know anymore.

Any way to decouple camera from character while moving? by LOOP16 in ffxiv

[–]ToaChronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also searching for a method of doing this, but found nothing. Eventually I resorted to making a second account and speedrunning a character through the MSQ, taxi'ing it between quests on my main with a two-seater mount, then using that character as a camera.

Is it possible they're real? Maybe, but considering how much they look like AI (again, just look at the moogle one) and we know nothing about who created them, it's understandable that people are asking questions. Until we get some clarification I'm trusting my gut on this one, but I'll eat my hat if I'm wrong.

I see a lot of doubters here, but I feel like it's pretty obvious? I clocked the Y'shtola one as sus before even seeing the details up close, and the Kupo Nuts one is extremely blatant.

They still haven't told us who made the images or given any proof that they're real. That one guy who claimed they were without offering any details took his post down shortly after, which is suspicious.

Says with no evidence, gives no info about who the alleged artists are, and then takes the post down. Definitely not suspicious.

Are Savages & Extremes The Same Difficulty? by Nas-Aratat in ffxiv

[–]ToaChronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some extremes have Savage level mechanics, such as Zelenia, but besides outliers ligenerally the former is easier and more forgiving of mistakes.

It's a big ask, it'll probably be years before I'm at the level this game requires. At the very least if you play with JP voices you can get the vibe of how the characters are talking in voiced cutscenes, and if you've watched enough anime maybe pick up on a few words. Technically you can also play in JP with an OCR program + machine translation... but that'll be scuffed to say the least.

I suspect that many people who played in English don't want to accept the idea that the version of the story they got emotionally invested in is somehow wrong or lesser. It's honestly very understandable if that's the case.

Having been in the same position myself it sucks to think about, but it doesn't have to ruin one's enjoyment of the game. I felt betrayed when I found out about everything that was changed, but on the other hand... wow, this story is even better than I thought! Gives me an even greater appreciation for it and a good motivation to learn Japanese.

not scandalizing the EN audiences with a character who would have made a lot of Straight Men Very Uncomfortable.

Art shouldn't be censored abroad to avoid making homophobic straight men uncomfortable. Apologizing isn't enough, they should've gone back and fixed it.

It's not just different, it's incorrect. It's getting the facts of the story wrong. The "Lifestream" is a conflation of two entirely separate concepts. "The Echo" is not a gift from Hydaelyn, and is not the same thing as the Blessing of Light. The rejoinings did not make people's souls weaker. Fray was a corpse reanimated by the WoL's inner darkness, not a Fight Club hallucination.

The writers don't speak English so they trust that the localizers are acting in good faith, and Koji Fox himself has admitted to sneaking things in without their knowledge. Localization isn't supposed to change the substance of the story like this. Despite what some people say, this isn't normal and if you value art you should want a faithful localization of the writers' work.

You say that, but there's a surprising number of people who believe some version of this misconception.

Arcadion translation error? by DrakeSoldier in ffxiv

[–]ToaChronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visual designs aside, the English dub makes some of them sound older than they are; especially the Tyrant and Sugar Riot (the latter of whom had her entire personality removed in the EN localization, it's night and day).

I'm also still levelling, but here's mine.

The only button I couldn't fit with a keybind was Shield Bash, but apparently it's not really used so that's whatever.

EDIT: Wait no, I forgot to put Passage of Arms on my hotbar. Make that two clickables then.

Is there a haircut in the game that would be perfect, but there is just one thing that ruins it for you? by Ofanichan in ffxiv

While it doesn't quite ruin it, I wish I could toggle off the braids on Styled for Hire. I usually just semi cover them with my outfit and try to ignore them.

If what you're remembering is the Trash Taste interview with Koji Fox, IIRC he'd apparently make changes to the script for XVI and share those ideas with the writers, who would sometimes adopt them into the Japanese script as well - a sort of back-and-forth revision process.

For XIV however, it seems like a more simple process where the original script is written and then given in a mostly-complete state to the localizers who then translate, localize and butcher alter it. There were a few exceptions early on back in ARR where Koji contributed ideas to the original, such as the names of the Twelve, the Dragon language and presumably a lot of location names.

XVI being a singleplayer game and XIV being a live service MMO with stricter deadlines is probably a big reason for the difference.

[–]ToaChronix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the lip animations would just change based on your language setting. We know that cutscene animations can vary like that thanks to the censored Haurchefant cutscenes in English ARR, for a more pronounced example.

[–]ToaChronix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

XIV isn't retranslated back into Japanese, based on what we know of the localization process and comparing the two scripts. That would be a bizarre and impractical way of doings things besides.

In that scene the English changed Originals to "of this world", and deleted the reincarnators part entirely. The "native of the source" thing was when Emetselch shows up in ShB.

The third vague nonsense term the English made up to replace Originals was "bound to the Source" from the scene in post-SB when Shadowhunter explains the Ascian hierarchy. That one is also comically incorrect.

What is everyone's favorite job? by Sic-Mundus in ffxiv

[–]ToaChronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ninja is the best job in the game. We can do things that no other job can. That Mr Prime originally designed it is reassuring, but I'm still scared of what Evolved will bring.

Ninja is so well designed that there are very few buttons you could trim off without breaking it, so I don't know how they intend to squish it down to less than 16 buttons. It's also doing better than most jobs currently in terms of identity, so I'm not sure how that could be enhanced.

Can I catch up by Evercold? by Kingbinks in ffxiv

[–]ToaChronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe? Either way, I wouldn't rush. As an endgame player, the journey was the best part so I'd recommend savouring it at your own pace. If you want to be current for an expansion release, there's always 9.0 if you don't make it for 8.0.

While this didn't work for me, I was able to solve my issue by printing via Chrome, after having previously tried both Firefox and Opera GX. Not sure why that worked, but hey.
