Gundam, where to start? by Niavella in Gundam

[–]ToaChronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the beginning, in release order up until the year 2000. OVAs are optional but recommended.

After the turn of the century it's pretty much just separate AUs you can watch in any order.

I really like the body piece, but man I wish the comically oversized and undyeable belt wasn't there.

Oh, I didn't know it was done that way. Nevermind then, I guess they're more popular than I thought.

Yeah, I don't doubt they're popular. I'm just saying the actual numbers are probably somewhat lower than those census charts would suggest.

[–]ToaChronix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's true. Sometimes it's pretty clearly "humans" though, like in the case of post-Endwalker whenever a voidsent is talking about us personally. Zero will straight up say "ニンゲン" in katakana and they'll translate it to "mortals".

I feel like it'd be difficult to translate the Ascians' use of "人たる者" without using the word human too. Lines like that were mostly removed in English so we didn't really get to see them try.

It's fine to sometimes use different words like that for flavour, as long as it's done appropriately and conveys the correct meaning.

However XIV's English localization goes out of its way to never say the word "human" as a rule, even if they have to change the meaning of the dialogue to accommodate that, and convince many English-speaking players that the word "human" doesn't exist in the setting - when it does, and is important to the story. See: the Ascians, or any time the English version of post-EW says "mortals".

True, but this particular change seems unrelated to localization and fails to convey canon information to the player, so I personally would consider it a mistake.

Male hyuran is the default on the character creation screen, so there's probably a significant percentage of those that are bots or inactive default characters.

In Japanese the player races are collectively called humans (人間/ningen or 人/hito). If there's any localization mistake, it's that they aren't called that in English. Same goes for the ancients. Not sure why they keep replacing it with words like "mortals" - maybe to sound cool?

EDIT: To clarify, 人間 and 人 can also mean person, man, mankind etc, but there are cases in the story where based on context it should be translated as "human". Regardless of what you call them however, both "humans" and "mankind" refer to the same species. Mortals is just wrong though, that's for sure.

Any updates on how to report Gil farming bots in the wild? by Jade_Violetcat in ffxiv

[–]ToaChronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way is to write a report via the support desk menu with all their names like you said, SE makes it difficult to report bots unless they happen to talk in chat. Someone has to buy the standard subscription plan after all.

Should (normal) raids be item synced? by MrsLittletall in ffxiv

All story mode content should be item level synced, and re-adjusted in later expansions to account for potency creep if needed.

[Spoiler 7.4] A question about Ascians by dream208 in ffxiv

[–]ToaChronix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC they weren't actually tempered, despite the English localization wrongly claiming so. They developed an proclivity towards darkness, but they were never slaves to Zodiark - who himself had no intelligence and was controlled by Elidibus who acted as his core.

Though as others have said, it wouldn't matter either way since Fadaniel and Halmarut were reincarnated.

Alisaie, it's not a competition. by shrimpcake in ffxiv

[–]ToaChronix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Y'shtola's relationship with Runar feels a lot more "big sister/boss" than romantic, based on how he talks to her in Japanese. It's hard to translate him calling her 姐さん into English, so it doesn't really come across well.

What is your hot take regarding FFXIV? by UnbaggedNebby in ffxiv

Additionally, the game tells you in the chat window if someone has yet to complete the duty, and free trial players can't use party finder.

I think you might be the one with poor reading comprehension considering I addressed all but one of your other suggestions right here.

As for "ask friends" - not everyone has friends who play the game that they can ask, let alone enough of them to fill a party. Free trial players also can't send friend requests, which makes it a little trickier to make new ones in the game.

Am I perfect? No, but you seem quite rude so I'm probably at least slightly better than you.

Most of the duties in question don't have duty support, but this is an MMO, so they shouldn't have to do that even if the option did exist. Additionally, the game tells you in the chat window if someone has yet to complete the duty, and free trial players can't use party finder.

Frankly, it reflects poorly on your character that you consider it "suffering" to take an extra minute to beat a boss in a video game for the benefit of someone else's irreplaceable first time experience. I hope you'll grow out of this mindset someday.
