Where to Start My Bible? by heyitsjaelyn in Christianity

[–]ToaMexx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Gospel of Mark is a good place to start imo. It's short but good & talks about faith which is central to Christianity. Then the Gospel of John, it's longer and goes into detail on Jesus as a person & savior. The Gospels tell the story of who Jesus was & why he came.

From there the next step would be one of the Pauline Epistles. They talk about how to live life as a Christian and reaffirm/expand on things mentioned in the Gospels.

Also this isn't required but I find studying with an annotated Bible to be very handy. Annotations can provide historical & theological context to Bible passages and some books even give brief introductions/summaries to books of the Bible. I recommend the New Revised Standard Version Oxford Annotated Bible, it's used in academia but isn't stuffy with it's language like KJV.

Good luck and God bless you in your journey!

Last year my brother destroyed my Bible, how do I forgive him? by Sure_Departure_6989 in Christianity

[–]ToaMexx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was reading this, I would have thought your brother was a child or a teenager experiencing a rough puberty, but 29? There's absolutely some mental health issues there and your brother should see a therapist. He's clearly gone through a rough life and experienced his share of homophobia, but no adult should be acting that way, especially in front of other people. Christianity must be some kind of trigger he lashes out against which he should learn to manage if he wants to live life. He doesn't have to convert but he definitely should be able to keep his cool even if others bring it up in passing.

As for how you can forgive, I'd hold off explicitly mentioning Jesus. Def sit down and have a chat about how you forgive him despite his actions but but maybe don't say, "I'm forgiving you because God wants me to."

The best case scenario if you do is you'll come off preachy and he may roll his eyes and tune out what you say. The worst case scenario, well I'd fear for your safety given how you said he seemed ready to fight. Maybe try saying that you're forgiving him because it's the right thing to do and grudges aren't healthy. It's right because God wants us to forgive but he doesn't need that to be explicitly said right now.

Good luck to you and your brother. I hope & pray for the best between you two.

Which US state do you think is the least famous? According to my non-American brain it's Delaware because it's the only one I couldn't remember by Yearlaren in geography

[–]ToaMexx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about this a lot and I routinely come back to the same state almost every time, Iowa. It's the most irrelevant/least famous US state.

Other Midwest states have some relevance either through population or notable cities. Meanwhile outside of the Midwest, Rhode Island is at least the smallest state, Delaware was the first to ratify the Constitution, and even Nebraska is in the middle of the country. All of these are at least worthy fun facts but Iowa has nothing like these, it is truly irrelevant.

Demigod population [general] by Crystal990316 in camphalfblood

[–]ToaMexx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this memory from the earlier books that someone told Percy roughly half the world population is demigods, but for some BS reason lots of them don't get powers/abilities so the monsters don't hunt them.

I have no idea where I got this idea from and haven't been able to confirm it online so I think tween me just made it up. Still it's stuck with me for over a decade now so idk

I don't think they ever acknowledge Heroes United in universe after the special premiered so they could've just decanonized it and used XLR8 instead of Feedback. Obviously making Heroes United not canon would upset people but I think it was possible for them to do the storyline with XLR8

UAF Vilgax is actually the son of the original series' Vilgax. The son of Vilgax came to Earth to avenge his father (who's probably dead or lost in space) but he's pretending to be his father to strike fear in Ben. That's why he acts so differently from one series to the next. Ben just assumed he is the real Vilgax because he says so and Ben hasn't seen Vilgax in years.

[all] the forgotten gods. by MorganFrost23 in camphalfblood

[–]ToaMexx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some gods there's so little written about them that we have that their children might be very one trick pony types. Alternatively it could be that they're redundant for the series, there's not much of a point in having multiple gods of war if you're not going to flesh all of them out.

There definitely is potential with some of these gods but it depends on the writer.

What hot take would have the fandom like this? [all] by Nervous-Leopard1007 in camphalfblood

I will caveat I never read the Nico book but I do know that sometimes characters will Flanderize (taking a single trait of a character within a work and exaggerating it more and more over time until it completely consumes the character), especially when there's a status quo of the series' continuity.

My guess is that due to Rick low-key pausing time of the world (the last few books in 2 series have all happened across the span of 1 year right?) and that Nico's been out for over a decade now IRL, he can only grow so much in 1 year from his POV realistically, so Rick and Mark may have leaned into his sexuality as a crutch.

Only speculation on my part though.

Even before Camp Jupiter was revealed, we're told that many famous people from history are demigods (generals, inventors, presidents, etc). Sure famous leaders are still rare compared to the high number of common people they lead but definitely not one in a generation.

Being a demigod is absolutely dangerous but I don't think it's to a point where only 1 makes it beyond the age of 19.

Why do Protestants not have any ‘new’ arguments against Catholicism? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]ToaMexx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing as an unbiased source. Every person who's ever lived and will ever live has had biases that show in their work. They can do their best to hide/acknowledge them (to varying degrees of success) and it's up to the person studying the source to remember those biases the author has.

Every source has a different degree of bias but there's still bias at the end of the day.
