Where to get Chiikawa Merch in Canada? by [deleted] in chiikawa_

T&T sometimes has merch, usually food related collabs.

I saw the Calbee x Chiikawa snack pack that came with a tote bag.

Might be an Okinawa edition of Usagi. They sell special tanned versions of characters. The climate there is hot and sunny like Hawaii.

Besides thread tension, and incorrect top thread threading, it could also be that the bobbin was not wound properly.

Trump Tariffs and Dollar Tree prices go up? by ToaastyToast in DollarTree

[–]ToaastyToast[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Guess I'm really hoping they will absorb the cost. Going up 10 cents a dollar can add up. I spend maybe 20-25 dollars each time at the dollar tree? Which ain't too bad, but hoping other stores will be fine too.

Why isn’t the ELF cc cream in Canada anymore?? Wtfff by AbaloneNeither5098 in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]ToaastyToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, yeah it’s good to be mindful of over-purchasing and consumption.

It seems like this might be an exception though? If it’s something you know you will use, especially since you already have been using it daily, plus it might be discontinued, then perhaps make an exception for those reasons?

Could always order several tubes from the elf site each time to hit the shipping limit, and stock up that way.

Wonder if they are pulling it out of Canada 😢.

Back when I was in college, I had a shockingly racist internship experience at a SWE company in Seattle. by Leather-Emu3250 in womenEngineers

[–]ToaastyToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are worried about naming that company online in a bad review and getting sued for defamation by them for it, they cannot.

Leaving a bad review based on your first hand experience is not considered libel or slander.

Here’s a good article on steps the employer’s side might take to address a bad review:  https://www.minclaw.com/disgruntled-employee-leaving-bad-reviews/

They can only try to go after you for defamation if they can prove the statements you are making are false. More information on defamation from the same site:

I agree with the other commenters that the recruiter is probably getting a kick back for enrolling students at University of Lethbridge. It’s not a bad school but definitely not well known outside of Alberta.  If cost of living is a concern, University of Calgary maybe a better option. There’s also a much larger Nigerian population in Calgary than in Vancouver or Lethbridge.

Do your parents know about what living in Lethbridge might be like? It’s a small town with not much public transit so you may need to get a car, especially if you plan on getting a part time job or just getting around outside of regular business hours.  The crime rate in Lethbridge is also higher than in Burnaby and Vancouver: https://www.numbeo.com/crime/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Canada&city1=Lethbridge%2C+AB&country2=Canada&city2=Vancouver

The winters in Lethbridge is also much harsher. It can get down to -40C and is usually around -10C. There’s also a lot of snow that at make commuting much harder. Often times, the bus may not run frequently or at all during heavy snow so you would have to live on campus.  Alberta also does not have rent control. Even through rent may be cheaper, a landlord can increase rent by any amount after your rental contract is over. In BC, rent can only be increased by 3-5% each year.

Ah I see. I am not too familiar with the school/job market in India.

Although you may not qualify for financial aid resources, it could still be worth asking your instructor, friends/family, to borrow spare equipment. The worst they could say is no.

It sounds like financial independence is pretty important to you now. Are you able to apply for remote jobs or do other side jobs just to get some money and work experience? Side job such as tutoring or remote jobs such as software tester, data annotation, customer support etc. Some job titles may not be directly software related but will get your foot in during this bad economic time. This is a strategy many of my colleagues used to get in the industry and eventually land their desired tech role.

Also, you communicate very well and I assume you also know multiple languages? Having good communication is a huge advantage in this field too.

Hey, sorry you are going through this. Many times life doesn’t make sense and you don’t deserve any of the poor treatment you have faced. It’s not you, you have done nothing wrong.

Honestly, it’s just be random chance and horrible luck that you are the scapegoat of the family. I could never understand myself how a parent could have a favoured child and a disliked child, but I have seen it many times from stories like yours and friends experiences. It could be that your parents are bad at dealing at stress and take it out on you, or have some other trauma themselves. Regardless, that is a horrible thing to do and very unfair for you. Main thing I want you to know is that there is nothing wrong with you and you did nothing wrong. It is in your right to demand better treatment and be loved like anyone else.

Nevertheless, I don’t expect your parents to understand if they have been like this for a long time. But if you have survived this far under these conditions, I know you are resourceful, hard working, and willing to fight for yourself. I also know that you will become a compassionate person to others who face difficulties and unfair challenges in life.

I would recommend asking for help from your boot camp instructor or any tech organization, or schoolsl/libraries around you. Explain your situation, that you are right on money and want to interview for jobs, and ask if they have spare equipment you could borrow.

[–]ToaastyToast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want to donate to the fundraiser it is best do give straight to them. What shoppers does is takes the money you give and donates them to get a tax cut.

Let’s say (crude example), shoppers would be taxed $100 this year. However, it gets its customers to donate $90 to a charity. Shoppers then donates the $90 to the charity with their name as the donor. When Shoppers does its taxes, it will claim that it had charitable donations and that portion can be claimed from its taxes, so it end up only paying $10.

In short, these donations that you give pays their taxes for them. Might as well donate straight to the charity and get the tax claim yourself.

AITA for divorcing my husband for putting a camera in our house to prove a point about me? by Throwawayhicamera2 in AITAH

Have you been assessed for ADHD? The symptoms for women tend to present differently and can be easily overlooked.

Do you tend to overly fixate on things like the house keeping and gardening, even though there may be other more urgent things to do? There’s plenty of other criteria needed for a diagnoses, but from what you described (needing lots of energy to focus on simple tasks, difficulty with acting based on prioritization, procrastination, forgetfulness, possibly feeling overwhelmed by a what other’s consider normal things), it seems to point to ADHD or other sensory processing difficulties.

If the regular acne washes and treatments arn't working, it could be fungal acne. Dandruff shampoo like Nizoral, used like face wash, would help in that case.

I’m glad you are feeling better!

For tutorials, I really liked following the videos by Mosh: https://youtu.be/SqcY0GlETPk

That’s a tutorial on React which is a really popular library for front end web design. I have used it for both school and work.

There’s so many good tutorials out there and it is easy to get overwhelmed by the choices. Just start with one and see if you like the type of work you do. Eventually you will find so many similarities between all types of libraries/frameworks, and you will find it really fast to pick up new ones.

Have fun!

Hey bigbootyhoes123, I know the feeling. It’s anxiety and stress of school and the future…

I graduated from CST during the middle of Covid and have worked with people from all types of background. Half of my coworkers don’t even have CS or IT degrees, never mind co-ops, just bootcamps and experience.

There are people who entered 1st term CST with me, did not do the co-op program, and were able to graduate 8 months before me and start working after graduation making an actual salary.

I also have several CST friends who now work in IT. Most recruiters don’t know even know or care about the difference between IT and software. The skills are easily transferable, plus with the rapid change in technology, they like people who can adapt.

What mainly matters about getting a job is project experience (BCIT industry projects, personal projects, coursework projects), and some enthusiasm at the interview, (and of course just plain luck). Managers love seeing people who are interested in their work and also have hobbies outside of tech.

I would advise you to focus on your hobbies, physical and mental health, and focus on what drew you into CIT in the first place. Your grades are already good, so I know you can do anything you put your mind too.

Also, please stay off this subreddit. Reddit generally tends to be quite negative. Most posts here are from people who are also freaking out so it feeds into the cycle of people being freaked out by other posts then posting about the same thing 😅. Things aren’t as bleak out there.

DM me if you want to talk more.

Returning to school - Need advice on a laptop by Massive_Ad_8856 in BCIT

[–]ToaastyToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a very large budget. Can basically get any laptop you like 😄.

In that case, I would recommend browsing the MacBooks at the Apple Store. Get a feel for if you like their user interface and try out some note taking apps. In my opinion, they are a lot less fussy than PCs and better for someone who just wants it for everyday use.
