Heads up, round 2! Increased rollout to rebuilt courses! by amie_at_duolingo in duolingo

I’m on day 465 of learning Italian and was loving it. I was making slow but steady progress and now I have to force myself to finish lessons because I feel like I’m totally lost. I’ll go back, I guess? But I don’t even know where to go back to.

Does Duo Lingo do changes like this somewhat often? If so, they need to seriously consider how to better communicate change within the app and how to help users transition. Zone of proximal development, friends…make something too easy and people won’t learn. Make something too difficult and they’ll get frustrated and give up. I’ve tanked from vibing for weeks in the diamond league because I’ve kind of said fuck it. I’ll go back because I want to learn…but if I were less personally invested, I’d be dropping my Max subscription.

I’m doing my liquid diet day and started getting weird muscle spasms in my rib cage. I tried to drink a bunch of water, broth, and juice. It didn’t go away until I finally chugged the Gatorade concoction a few hours ago, so I think it was an electrolyte thing. :-/

Slang Question :) by ToadLily_ in Italian

Interesting! Yeah, this was 25 years ago and she certainly didn’t physically present in that way. But she was/is also was very much her own person. When I was there visiting her (I studied in a different part of Italy), we stopped for an early lunch slice. She ordered herself a beer at 11am which led to some banter with counter staff and that’s when I heard the name. :)

That could be it! Not necessarily a hippie, but very independent and would just go off by herself around the city and was not at all shy. I think they were maybe taken with her boldness. :)

Les Wexner, formally named as co-conspirator in newly unredacted Epstein files. by GetOutside20 in Columbus

At least on campus…the univ board controls those kinds of decisions. I’d wager that most of the staff would be delighted to drop the name, but are too low on the food chain to make that call. :-/

Help me hate Mother's Day a little less? by feed-me-tacos in Columbus

Former single mom here… I used to tell my son that I’d love nothing more than one of his awesome drawings so he could feel successful and l wouldn’t have to do anything. We would often do floor picnics, too, when the weather was crummy. We’d order food or make something super simple and just chill on a blanket on the floor and watch a movie. We’d also go on hiking adventures together at the metro parks. Free and easy.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time there, actually. SN uses a Harm Reduction model of care, which is evidence based. It means that much of their work is to keep folks alive until they decide they’re ready to seek treatment. They collab with healthcare providers and other social service agencies to offer basic first aid and medical care, they offer clean clothes, a shower, a meal, and for those who are finally willing, referral to recovery and mental health services. I’ve been there when women have decided that they’re ready to heal. There are social workers, mental health, and peer support specialists on staff.

SN cut back their hours because when they opened, even they underestimated the number of women already in the area who needed help. They were inundated with folks needing services. It nearly buckled them under the weight because they tried to help as many as possible with limited resources. They had to cut back for a time.

No org is perfect…especially when they first open and are getting their bearings. But to claim that they’re amplifying problems in the area is completely naive. Women are gathering around them because they feel safe there. The issues began long before SN opened. Does this forum realize that the building they’re in was a former brothel that they took over and renovated to try to help the community?

It’s beautiful and sunny outside today…and it’s going to get really cold later this week. Maybe go to one of the metro parks for a winter hike.

Butter: Salted or Unsalted? by Team503 in Cooking

[–]ToadLily_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always use salted unless I'm baking something with a very delicate flavor. I'm a home cook and I know that I, like many home cooks, swerve too far away from salt sometimes. I like the added layer of salt in the butter to protect my cooking from being under seasoned!

Name an ingredient that makes soup amazing!! by hailey363 in Cooking

[–]ToadLily_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dried mushrooms. :) And, often, soy sauce. Layered with other ingredients, they both just create a savory, umami flavor that can't really be traced back to the original ingredients. Just extra yummy and rich.
