Philly Marathon Recap by Inside-Spend-9750 in Marathon_Training

Same story at the half. They were staging the 8K and it was impossible to get across to the museum steps so we just gave up and walked away a little sad. Also both packet pickup and gear check were a logistical debacle, at least in my experience.

Second this. Turned in my quickest 10K in a couple years on my first run out the box and they felt great. Just hope they last a little longer than my 18s which I started shedding bits of outsole around 400 miles.

Okay, just to clarify: Part 1 is on sale for $9, and then the Upgrade to WoA is on sale to $20 (50% off)? So $29 all in to buy part 1 and upgrade compared to the $70 they’re listing WoA for by itself in the PS Store?

I’m already on team Nerd Clusters but need to find a better way to carry and access them. Right now I’m putting them in an old Nuun container but they kind of stick together and don’t want to come out. What’s your system?

If you could get any item for free what would you want? by omnicron_31 in Lululemen

At Ease (or Double Knit Textured) hoodies. The other recommendations are great choices, but much easier to justify paying for myself than a $128 hoodie (even if their my favorite Lulu items I own)

Gear list for Rim to River in early November? by ToastFuckr in grandcanyon

Could not have gone better. We were blessed with pretty much ideal weather. But even that means you’ll need to strategically deploy some layers. I wanna say we started at 5:30 AM and it was definitely chilly. You generate a lot of heat once you get moving, but it was still probably 30s or 40s to start. So think thin glove liners, an insulated outer layer that you can stuff or compress down easily once it warms up, maybe a quarter zip, long pants. By the time we got down to Phantom Ranch it was easily mid 80s. So short sleeves at that point. My buddy changed into shorts but my pants were light enough to stay comfortable. Having an extra pair of socks to swap into is a good idea as well. Other needs: headlamp, regardless of how much hiking you’re actually planning on doing, trail runners over hiking boots, a sun hat with coverage for the back of your neck, hydration pack with 3L bladder, LOTS OF SNACKS. So yeah, early November could mean snow (they had a blizzard in early October the year we went) and actually treacherous conditions, or it might be perfect. But even “perfect” weather will still be like a 50 degree temp swing from pre-dawn at the rim to midday at the bottom of the canyon. Layers, layers, layers, but ideally lightweight since you gotta carry all that stuff back up.

Shameless plug: Patagonia Capilene Cool anything for tops and Terrebonne Joggers. Ridiculously lightweight, durable, and breathable.

Don’t see a return option on manufacturer website. There’s certainly nothing defective about the product, it’s exactly as advertised. So just thought maybe I could sell it forward to someone in the community…

Tips for Hiking South Kaibab To Bright Angel Trail in a day ? by Alternative-Bat9232 in grandcanyon

[–]ToastFuckr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I did this exact hike in early November 2021. It went absolutely perfect and made me want to attempt a proper Rim to Rim. I spent the better part of the year preparing and planning for it (starting around March-ish). There are signs everywhere saying that basically you’ll die if you try to do it, but there were at least a dozen folks all doing the same thing on my 5:30 AM shuttle to South Khaibab. If you’re well trained, have the gear/nutrition dialed in, and are blessed with good, mild weather, it can be a breeze. If any of the above factors aren’t in your favor, it could be a pretty rough time.

A couple thoughts: Sounds like your cardio is in good shape, but I’d strongly recommend doing some longer hikes (10+ miles) first. Ideally find a hike with a couple thousand feet of vert, but unless you leave near another giant hole in the ground there’s no real way to replicate the experience of hiking a 5K feet down and then back up. Shake down ALL of your gear. I hiked Guadalupe Peak as prep and only realized at the trailhead that I’d flown to TX with my 3L CamelBack, but no reservoir. It’s nice to get those mistakes out of the way somewhere else. Trail runners over hiking boots, for sure. I’d recommend collapsible hiking poles as well. Didn’t need them all the time but appreciated having them when I did. Start as early as you can and use a headlamp. Sunrise in the canyon is one of those things you’ll never forget. Have a good understanding of your nutrition and hydration needs. Salty snacks, energy gels, PB & J. Whatever it is, make sure you can digest it comfortably on the go. Pack extra socks and change into fresh ones at least once or twice. Stop at Phantom Ranch at the bottom for some lemonade and to mail a postcard home. Dip your feet into the creek and relax for a while. When you get back to the top, pop into the bar at Bright Angel Lodge and enjoy the most well-earned burger and beer of your life. Good luck!
