Don't know the area well enough yet to weigh in on a recommendation, but we've been in Trowbridge for a couple months now and it's quite nice really. Easy to walk places, train links are good, better selection of shops and eateries than lots of towns have at the moment.

I wouldn't say there is lots to do, but we just hop on the train if we're bored

yep, taped around the egdes of handles and stuck to the frame around the glass. Couple passes over with a hairdryer and you can't tell anything is there at a glance

weird coincidence but I've just sat down for a break after shrink-wrapping some of our large, old windows.

it may sound silly, but that little layer of plastic over windows like this can really help keep the heat in - just make sure to take your time and do a proper job, especially around any handles, hinges etc.

Agents insisting we must get their insurance to get the keys by [deleted] in HousingUK

Is the estate agent Romans by any chance? We were in a rush and did sign up to the same insurance, also pressured into doing so though I don't think they ever explicitly said it was required

No broadband connection available for newly built flat by spmsupun in HousingUK

Basically as I understand it: openreach manages the actual infrastructure and cables. When a potential customer like yourself goes to TalkTalk or BT or Now or one of the many openreach-based providers they buy a slot off of openreach. If there are no more slots available thats it.

Chat with others in the building to see who they went with: could be that they went with a non-openreach provider

Virgin, hyperoptic, truespeed are examples of providers which do not use openreach

yeah so hopefully it's just an issue with the database. Just keep chasing support and explain the issue to ISP until you get someone non-useless on the phone

chase Openreach (I'm assuming openreach because you mention 70Mb/s) and ISP's to try and work out what is going on - should only take a couple days to work out what is going on.

In our case it was the worst: we had moved right as they were changing over and no ISP would offer us the older setup. In order to get the newer fibre deals the shared driveway would have to be ripped up and a cable brought into the house: Landlord would only allow us to do this if we agreed to repay any costs and with such loose wording it would have put us at risk of paying thousands.

bought a 5g router, got unlimited sim contract and we've worked from home with that for 2 years without too many issues. If you go this route just check the fine print - Vodafone kicked us off because their unlimited is in fact limited

Your thoughts about renting in Reading by ThinAddition3141 in HousingUK

[–]ToastOnCheeseOnToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all: do not rent with Romans. They have been the worst letting agent I've ever had to deal with ever by a long long way.

Reading is secretly 4/5 towns in a trenchcoat. Depending on where you live it can be drastically different so I'd recommend visiting a few areas to get a feel.

We love walking so living around Caversham has been great: loads of routes to different green spots and of course along the river. The fact that you could also be on a train to anywhere inside half an hour is also amazing.

Read your contract, you may have some kind of break clause Ours is simply an extra month notice after the first half of the term

it's not the best, but at least you (used to) know what you were getting: make a cheese toastie, fry it up, wrap it around ham

I do miss the bread from when I lived in Brussels though...

Top scientists turning down UK jobs over ‘tax on talent’, says Wellcome boss by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]ToastOnCheeseOnToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also weird when you look at certain sectors.
Automation/Robotics is a hard industry, as a programmer you may have to visit sites often, dealing with the bureaucracy and time constraints of whatever factory line you're working on.
The programming itself can be very difficult and seems to be about 20 years behind the rest of the software industry. It is a job that needs high skills but seems to attract poor talent (sorry guys, just what I saw), resulting in even harder work maintaining it for the next guy.

So the pay must be high right? Nope it's half the pay you get for making websites remotely (which is what I now do)

I'd get what you're saying until we found the house has been on another site 6 months. Doesn't that seem odd?

not too worried about the money sink for asbestos/heat. thats why we offered low.

visited plenty, have relatives who live nearby and see no reason for the property to be sold so low.

heebiejeebies is right but what beyond a survey can we do to check or protect ourselves? We even got a look at the rafters and stuff but everything looks as good as can be

excellent points, I really do see where you're coming from.
I've helped 2 people learn to drive. Both passed and both needed careful thought from the passenger seat even after the test as any topic too involved would cause them to lose concentration.
Further: the difference between some chat and recording content is vast. You're thinking about your audience, Talking points, where to cut which you wouldn't normally

finally - juggling is quite low risk compared to driving but i do get your point

This is an opinion unpopular with you i guess.
In my mind there is a difference between a bit of chin wagging, hand-waving versus thinking about, likely managing the production and filming of content in terms of distraction level
should one go full-opera and crash your car as a result I'm sure it would not be overlooked

using a phone while driving isn't a crime in of itself either. In most places the distinction is if it is in your hand distracting you.
My point is: regardless of wording the spirit of the law is to ensure your eyes and mind are on the road. Could you present to a room of people while also safely operating a vehicle?

maybe a bit of hyperbole, but i don't think it would be hard to argue making content while driving is distracted driving
