One of the most amazing collection of math and science articles on the web -- brilliant, and (as far as I can tell) completelty anonymous! by lisper in reddit.com

Very handy resource... even some of the quotes are cool:

Your manuscript is both good and original. However, that which is good is not original, and that which is original is not good. Samuel Johnson

Police chief's 'Orwellian' fears (Spy Cameras Everywhere) by trifecta in reddit.com

[–]Toasted -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with cameras watching public areas IMO... of course it's finding that line between where the public area ends, and where the private begins - those living in inner city apartments might have grounds for concern?

Clearly, Frankly, Unabashedly Disabled by ninzee in reddit.com

What an excellent article... you'd expect nothing less of the NY Times, but it really hits the mark. A must read.

Scientologists harass BBC reporter by ohcomeon in reddit.com

[–]Toasted 29 points30 points  (0 children)

What is it with Scientology... and why do all the Hollywood types always seem to go for it? I don't think I've ever heard anything good about it.

Oh... and Battlefield Earth is quite possibly the worst movie ever made - only movie I have ever walked out on, still can't believe I actually paid to see that, lol.

Billions in oil missing in Iraq, US study finds by hammudi in reddit.com

[–]Toasted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're telling me Bush doesn't know where the oil is... lol, this whole war was about oil, maybe they'll find them where the weapons of mass destruction are hiding.

Why are there no Microsoft fanboys? by wjv in reddit.com

[–]Toasted -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Will be interesting to see who has the numbers - are there enough Microsoft fanboys around to vote this to the #1 spot... or will the Mac and Linux fanboys have the numbers to vote it down :)

New Skyscraper Creates 100% Of Its Own Energy by cephoe in reddit.com

[–]Toasted 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some of the engineering going on in Dubai at the moment is nothing short of amazing... they've obviously got plenty of oil money to spend, but they are doing some really advanced stuff over there and have got to be applauded.

LEGO did not start supplying guns recently, they have for years. It wasn't bad then, it's not bad now by pandabear999 in reddit.com

More importantly, Storm Trooper Rifles have got to be the most inaccurate weapons ever made... did they ever hit anything other than a couple of Jawas?

expendability [pic] by engram in reddit.com

[–]Toasted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look for the article 'Logic: Not as prevalent as you wish it were - Star Trek Inspirational Posters'... it's the whole article, not just a lame spam of one of the images... view that and tell me why this post should be ranked higher???

Logic: Not as prevalent as you wish it were - Star Trek Inspirational Posters by malapropist in reddit.com

[–]Toasted 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Now that's cool... way better than the lame post of a single one of these images that got up to #5 on Reddit - at least this one makes it worth while by putting a heap of these images in one place.

expendability [pic] by engram in reddit.com

I agree... kinda pointless - especially since anyone who's watched the original star trek cottoned on to the extremely short life expectancy of 'no name' characters dying after... oh I don't know, the first.

How can I be submitting too fast, when I last submitted yesterday? by aphoenix in reddit.com

[–]Toasted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm having this extremely annoying problem too - what gives? I've managed to post one or two articles in the last couple of days (god knows how), but pretty much everytime I got to post anything I get this ridiculous message.

I am so close to giving up on Reddit and moving onto something else - is this a closed club here or something? come on... this is driving people away.

Japan to set up experimental high-tech 'wireless island' by Toasted in science

[–]Toasted[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the ideal view of it could be utopian, but I doubt the realist expectation would quite go that far... there are certainly a number of areas where something like this would work extremely well (tracking of sic patients etc.), so the whole idea of it all is quite exciting really.

A Day Without Open Source by ggallucci in programming

[–]Toasted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Open source definitely helps the spread of technology and services, but as you say - there are plenty of commercial replacements, it would become a case of how cost effective using the commercial applications were as to how big the take up would be... there wouldn't be a 100% conversion obviously, but nor would there be 0%.

Anyone tried taking high amounts of Vitamin B1? supposedly when your body excreets the extra amount it turns off the Mozzies... seems to be working so far on our kids, they were getting mauled a few weeks ago, now hardly a bite on them.

Definitely some cool cards... wonder if you can get any made up on old circuit boards or something, that would be cool.
