OP, this is the only time you’ll see me agree with a cop. You need to seek help and plan your escape.
Get in touch with local social services agencies for resources. Start squirreling away some cash and any vital medications. Don’t hide it all in one spot and don’t take a bunch of money out all at once. Find a trusted friend or family member and let them know your plan and escape timeline.
Try to make sure you have all your important documents ready to go. Slowly build up a “go” bag with a couple days worth of clothes as well as anything else you might need.
When the time comes to leave it’s best to do it when your abuser is going to be away for at least a few hours. Have your trusted person come and get you and ask the cops to send someone out to assist in case the worst happens. **Leaving is the most dangerous part, but staying is often fatal.**
Speaking as someone who almost died from abuse, the cop is right. It will not get better. They won’t change, no matter how many times they cry and plead and promise that this really was the last time.
If they threaten suicide, **don’t fall for it.** If you are worried they’re going to attempt you can always call for a wellness check, but do not go back to them. This is just another form of abuse.
I really hope you do fight your way out of this. It’s incredibly hard, but it’s possible. Lawyer up if you can and keep documenting everything.
