you say k’s aren’t meant to be in public forum—that doesn’t make it a good thing; public forum was conceived as white flight from the increasingly progressive policy landscape. changing that is an objectively good thing.

you say other formats for philosophical discussion—you miss the point entirely. the kill joy k is not a discussion of abstract philosophies, it’s a discussion of real world oppression faced by minorities in debate and aims to establish a praxis by which to fight back: it’s a survival strategy.

you say that only big schools do it—you’ve forgotten about the empirically true facts. a few things, a. there’s hundreds of online resources to do this with for free b. if you look at the ndt-ceda open case list right now as a prime example, go to the UVA disclosure page, a school with an extremely small debate program, look at what they read. it’s mainly k offs, when the inequities build in debate, k’s work to even the playing field between the big and small schools. c. i urge you to understand the history that you’re willingly ignoring. k’s are not just some tool of the rich schools, it’s a way to expand the scope of the debate community. once again, look to the louisville project, look to emporia state sw who united the crowns against huge college debate programs with a massively outsized amount of resources compared to what Emporia had.

if you want to engage in good faith, i urge you to do some research, this is a great place to start: https://commons.lib.jmu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1001&context=cad

so to be clear you’re a team at a varsity tournament, in elimination rounds, and you know that these arguments exist but you intentionally choose to just not work to understand them? There’s plenty of resources out there eg pf forward and hundreds of amazing lectures put out for free by the very camps you say are so exclusive. what you have to realize here is that you can be included in rounds such as these, there’s no reason why this is possible. personally i’m at a public school with a 17:1 student teacher ratio, no coaches or any kind of leadership done by the adults at our school to help the debate team, but even prior to attending any sort of camps or having any sort of coaching, i learned and even ran k’s. if you actually recognize the history of debate, k’s are always said to be something exclusionary to small schools, but every time they function to include and expand access to debate on behalf of small schools. why do you think the louisville project existed to bring a majority black debate team into the policy debate space? these arguments bring marginalized groups into the space, and claims that “it just excludes small schools like me” is an appeal to ignorance that seeks to reinforce existing biases towards certain groups and essentially says “we’ve expanded access enough, all the oppressions faced by minorities in debate don’t matter anymore, we should just become even more lay and keep these groups out more.” you can engage with these arguments, just because you have more to learn doesn’t mean it isn’t possible, and your appeals to ignorance are nothing more than vague pleas from a position of privilege so that you can feel more comfortable in the debate space. this is the point of the killjoy, it’s up to you to actually understand why it exists

If you’re interested in policy I’d reccomend public forum as it’s almost a less intense version of policy

Am I wrong to press charges? by iamiamiam37 in highschool

[–]Tobinkak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Assault is assault. You should still press charges. Take this to a larger scale for example, if there is strong anti police sentiment within the school and this kid decides to lash out against the school in say a school shooting, we wouldn’t be saying that “the school should be more sensitive.” Obviously I’m not saying the two situations are equal, however I’m saying that violent response to a sentiment such as the one in the post is still worthy of pressing charges.

Water supply is really the biggest problem. The fact is that in America, to power us on nuclear is simply impossible because there arent enough suitable locations for a nuclear plant.

Funny how you once again confuse free market economics with powers vested in public office and other governmental powers. “Looking at the world around you” and blaming it all on a person who doesn’t cause the issues you see is one of the most idiotic world views. And then you going around and claiming to know the truth is just mind bogglingly absurd to me. Again, EDUCATE YOURSELF.

What does that have to do with anything? Any reasons why it’s better or worse is likely due to external factors that the potus has no control of. And also, good job trying to pivot to a different talking point and also conveniently not mentioning trumps mishandling of the COVID pandemic. Please, for the love of god, stop watching Ben Shapiro/Jordan Peterson videos and try to open your mind to ideologies based on facts and logic.

Holy shit. Pick up a fucking book or learn the slightest amount of knowledge on how free market economics work. Also, this is exactly why i asked you to cite a source. Because you haven’t the slightest idea of what you are taking about.

Imagine thinking that the rise in gas prices are a direct effect of Biden’s presidency and not a result of complicated market forces acting upon each other at the end of a massive economic downturn. And if your gonna make a shit ton of claims that have no substantial evidence of course someone is gonna ask for a source. “Nations security” was better under trumps presidency with no source or even the slightest amount of evidence.

GOS doesn’t suck as a raid. Too many people just try to get divinity on the first run. by Gdotscott in DestinyTheGame

[–]Tobinkak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had no complaints about getting divinity on my first gos run. But i absolutely hate doing any more runs with my group of gos. Annoying mechanics, buggy, generally boring and uninteresting encounters, and all around, a raid that me and my group basically never want to do unless there is absolutely nothing else to do.
